A lot of the opponents against the expanded playoff were worried about it devaluing the regular season. Conference champs getting preferred seeds/byes helps with that. NFL works the same way. Look no further than the 14-3 Vikings going to the Rams this week. Yes, I think this year was also an anomaly. Both the Big 12 and ACC were weak. I'd expect most years at least 1 of the 2 conferences would produce a real contender.

The power of the Big 12 are in the SEC now. It might be a long time before either Clemson or FSU are meaningful contenders again. Rapidly, the SEC and Big Ten took over college football and that disparity is going to get worse, not better. There will be large disparities developed within each league as well. For example, consider Wisconsin dead. College football is just minor league professional football at this point. I watched more Sopranos reruns last night than the OSU game because I'm not a fan of minor league sports. The SEC and Big Ten are completely set up to outpace the other conferences. College football is dead as we once knew it and it isn't going back.

If we get literally any sort of regulation(salary cap, actual penalty for tampering, etc) the gap should narrow. @Hilltoppershared a pretty good article about what may be coming with that a few days ago..though the SEC and B1G will do everything they can to prevent it. The SEC and B1G are ruining college sports and I can’t stand it. Edited January 11 by LZIp

The SEC and Big Ten should exit the NCAA and start their own football league. It's the most profitable thing to do now that it's professional football. TV networks would pay a fortune for the broadcast rights.

College football is dead as we once knew it and it isn't going back. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. The Big 10 and SEC collectively will far supercede the Big 12 and ACC. That said there are still ~25 teams between the 2 conferences. I don't think it's unreasonable that 1 of those 25 teams to emerge as a top 7 or 8 team most years. FSU was supposed to be that team before they fell flat on their faces. As for schools like Wisconsin they come and go. Only the blue bloods are consistently great. Even then they can have down periods, like Michigan did for a number of years. Wisconsin took a step back and Washington who was irrelevant for a number of years made the national championship. Washington took a step back this year and then Indiana emerged. There will always be programs that come out of nowhere and have a period of excellence before returning to their median. Selling an entire athletic department seems to be the next step. I hope there isn't anyone out there delusional enough to think it's still college football. It's a professional sports league. It's all so gross. Edited January 20 by GP1

During the regular season it's not a big deal as there are 5-10 games on at 1 time so odds are at least one of them will be good.

Actually, there are around 10 on at any one time and it's hard to find more than one. It's going to get worse and I'm not sure how it gets better after that.
GP1
I think society may be going through football fatigue. The expanded CFP is not going as expected and NFL ratings are down also. I don't know if there is a correlation or causation between expanded college football playoff and decline in NFL viewers. If there is, the NFL will need to do everything it can to destroy the now minor league college football playoff. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43525435/cfp-title-game-most-watched-season-viewership-down
csims0917
NFL ratings are down simply cause the games have been terrible. The quality has just not been there this year I feel like I only watched 2-3 games that I was on the edge of my seat for.

It doesn't help that the NFL has an officiating problem, that leads fans to speculate that the games are rigged. All you had to do is watch the Chiefs game to suspect something fishy is going on in the NFL. It doesn't even have to be true btw, as conspiracy theories are brain-melting stuff; but it's too painfully obvious that the game IS NOT OFFICIATED EQUALLY even in the same game.

It's barely football anymore. Bad tackling. Bad coaching. Gimmick kickoffs. Bad QB play. Players can't be physically anymore. Nonsensical "dancing" after routine plays. Too many replays. Too many commercials. Only drunks and degenerate gamblers can enjoy this nonsense, which are the base demographic groups now.

Most of it is just dumb. I think the media has confused them into believing they are somehow entertainers so they think they need to do something to entertain us other than playing football well. It's all just a bit too much. I'm pretty convinced if the networks would stop showing it, they would stop doing it.
