Hit portal before 4 games played saves a year of eligibility.  The kids are using the system to their benefit

The new age of college football. Actually, they can play in four games and not lose a year of eligibility- step on the field for that 5th game and you lose a year so this week was the cut off.  Kids all over the country stepping away from their teams.

Does the student athlete lose their scholarship once they hit the portal, or have to re-pay 75% of it's value? Or do they get a free semester even though they quit before the end of September?

Paying the scholarship is a small price to pay to get rid of someone who doesn't want to be around.

Didn't the NCAA specify time periods during each year that limit when players can enter the portal?

Assuming they didn't bar entry during the season any week could be the cut off week.

Week 4 may be the cut off for most players, but not necessarily all of them.

Week three would be the cut off for a kid who played in week 0,1,2 and 3.

Week 8 would be the cutoff for anyone who played in only three games before week 8 and week 8.

And so forth.

If there are limits during the season, never mind.

it occurred to me that those who made a futures bet on zips wins under 3.5 may now cash in their tickets 😪

... and those who took the Zips for over 3.5 can only sit here knowing that ticket is dead and dream of what I'm watching today on The Pat McAfee Show at James Madison University. That used to be a school we'd schedule as 'filler' and expecting a 'W.' Their fan base is absolutely energized and electric (granted, they are a captive audience in the middle of a mountain valley), national shows (CGD and PMS) are showing up on campus, their football team is undefeated and their basketball team recently went into East Lansing and took down #4 MSU in OT.

Let's go Joe Mo, gotta step it up next year.

So in a few weeks on December 4, players will officially be allowed to enter the transfer portal until January 3. I fully expect this to be another year of enormous turnover on this roster. I’m sure the coaching staff will tell several players to move on, I’m sure several players will leave because they are unhappy with their playing time, and I’m sure there will be several players leave because they want to be a part of a winning program and/or they think they are too good for this team. Every team will have its share of players hitting the portal, but it just seems like this team is likely to have more than the average. What’s that number…20…30…40..new faces? Time will tell.

Looking at the roster, I can easily count in the teens the number of guys who wouldn't hurt us at all by leaving under the criteria of having been here multiple years and haven't sniffed the field, or transferred in with multiple years of experience and didn't sniff the field.

There aren't many players who could leave that aren't easily replaceable IMO. Handful of guys we want to keep like Fish, McCoy, Nunnally, Adams, Lewis, and a few others.

Probably looking at 30-ish new faces is my guess. I'm currently showing about 17 open scholarships due to graduation, and 13 current HS commits and 1 current transfer commit. Don't see us adding more than a few more high school commits, so that means looking at 15+ transfer portal players. Plenty of opportunity again to improve the roster. Keep most of the guys who've shown they can play at or near all-MAC level, find a QB, and find a couple Nunnally and FIsh type transfer portal players and we'll be cooking next year IMO.

One thing that gives me hope of not losing key contributors to the TP is the Wagon Wheel postgame interview with Lingard.  According to him he absolutely LOVES it here and plans on being a presence around the program for the rest of his life.  He's played at both Miami-FL and Florida, so I'm sure he's letting the fellas know they're in a good place and the grass is definitely not always greener.

I hope you're right.

I don't particularly know what all goes into being recognized at Senior day, meaning are they being recognized because its their last game (due to eligibility or choice), or are they being recognized because of graduation, but the Zips game notes shows the following:

"Prior to the game, Akron will recognize 14 seniors in 0 QB D.J. Irons, Jr., 1 WR Daniel George, 1 DB K.J. Martin, 5 TE T.J. Banks, 8 DT Terray Jones, 9 DB Judson Tallandier, II, 13 QB Jeff Undercuffler, Jr., 16 DB Nate Thompson, 21 RB Drake Anderson, 21 DB Cameron Threatt, 27 RB Lorenzo Lingard, Jr., 60 OL Ben Frank, 92 DL Tyler Carter and 99 DL Devon Robinson."

Cam Threatt, KJ Martin, and Tyler Carter are 3 that caught me by surprise. Martin because its been mentioned he has 1 more year if he wants it, and Carter and Threatt are each listed as R-Sophomores on the roster. Missing from R-Sr category are walk-on Sean Conroy as well as Brycen Yarmo.

Aside from the guys we know whose eligibility is up, there doesn't seem to be any consistency with how they are being recognized, so the only conclusion I can draw is the 3 above mentioned guys are deciding to move on from football. Suppose we'll see.

Crazy that EMU beats Buffalo tonight and will be going to a bowl game. ZIPS absolutely looked like the better team last week yet they are going to a bowl and we will likely end the season 2-10. This team did not, does not, know how to finish, so depressing.

There will be another team next year.

"Former"?  Was that his twin brother I saw and heard at the microphone in the JAR this season?

ALL-MAC TEAMS

CJ Nunnally = 1st Team

Daniel George = 2nd Team

Jasaiah Gathings = 2nd Team

Bryan McCoy = 3rd Team

KJ Martin = 3rd Team

I figured Gathings had a shot, although I didn’t think it would be 2nd team. George is a surprise. I thought he had a good year, but would be left off as he didn’t have the stats to back it up. Same with KJ Martin.

Also surprised Fish was left off.

I'm surprised that McCoy is not 2nd Team and I agree with you about Fish being totally left off. I also thought Terray Jones would be 2nd or 3rd Team.

He has done Mount games for years. I believe he went to school there. He’s done with UA football, at least for the time being. Still will be there for most Zips men’s basketball games, MAC tournament, MAC football championship.

Good point about Terray Jones. Just looking at the 3rd team, Jones was just as good, if not better than Darius Alexander. I’d argue Fish was better than Kyle Moretti.  Might have been one of those situations where the team record played a part? Hard to justify 7 players from a 2 win team making all conference.
