clarkwgriswold
The Zips hope to exact revenge against Ball State at the JAR Tuesday night. Ball State comes in at 20-9/11-5, fresh off an inexplicable loss to EMU that had followed an impressive win over PCCC. The Cardinals are very balanced in scoring, with 4 players that average between 12.1 and 14.5 ppg (Jarron Coleman- 14.5; Jaylin Sellers- 13.8; Payton Sparks- 12.8; Damarius Jacobs- 12.1). In their January 6th 70-63 win over the Castaneda-less Zips, Ball State was led by Coleman and Sparks who each scored 15 points. Enrique had a double-double for the Zips with 23 points and 14 rebounds and Tribble was the only other Akron player in double figures with 14. Or will need to win at the MAC Center.

Right now, it looks like we can finish anywhere between the 2nd and the 4th seed. A win on Tuesday would get us 2 or 3. Win both and it looks like we get the 2 seed. Blue & Gold
Bracket Generator Great resource. Thank you @NWAkron. Tuesday's game is yuuuuuge. If we're being honest, Friday's game in Kent is going to be a tough one to win, so it's imperative we beat Balls on Tuesday night to lock in either a 2nd or 3rd seed. If we were to, heaven forbid, lose both games we'd be the 4 seed & almost certainly have play Ohio in the quarters and Toledo in the semi's. That's the toughest path to take to the MACC. Last year it didn't seem to matter but this time around, the draw is going to matter. And I don't think there is an opportunity for any team to tank their final games...like Bowling Green did in 2019 Mar 5, 2019 7:00 pm, ESPN+Bowling Green 91–

The 7th and 8th seeds are totally up for grabs. If EMU and Miami win out which is possible, they take 7 and 8 and Buffalo stays home. Central can sneak in even if they lose to Toledo on Tuesday.

csims0917
Something about the Friday PCCC game is giving me guaranteed lost vibes so winning at home on senior night will be huge to hold the 3 seed.

Not sure of a guaranteed loss Friday night. However, a win tomorrow night, makes Friday's game meaningless in a few ways. Kent, with two wins at home, can lock down a tie for regular season championship and the #1 seed. And all that depends on Toledo losing at Muncie. but does that mean much? first round against say Western Michigan or Buffalo? Tomorrow is about who plays Ohio and who plays Northern Illinois in the first round. The coaches contracts likely have some nice bonuses for beating rival teams and winning regular season championships. LoyalZIP
Fun fact about this week. Three of Akron’s five wins at Kent since 2007 have come after a loss. 2012, the Zips lose at home to Buffalo and win at Kent to clinch the regular season title. 2017 (🤮) Zips drop senior night against a terrible Miami team then go to Kent and win. 2021 Zips blow out Kent on the road after losing at Toledo. But I just care about Ball State right now. Make the Kent game as meaningless as possible from a seeding standpoint. We’re already going there with house money after beating them once this year. Playing with nothing to lose and only playing to ruin their senior night sounds wonderful. Tuesday comes first though, and Sparks or not it won’t be easy. They’re coming off a bad loss and will be pissed. Lewis is a good one.
NWAkron
News from Muncie: (maybe those wily Over the Pylon guys are gaslighting us?): "Pretty disheartening article in the SP today. Sparks might not even play in the tourney, Pearson is about "60%," Coleman injured his foot in the second half vs. EMU (he gets more of a pass for his play knowing that), Sellers is banged up, Jacobs is nursing an injury. Some of those things are because of games, some of those things are because we lack depth and they've had to be pushed really hard, and Lewis goes hard in practice. In short, the fantastic win against Kent may have been our last of the season. All we can do is hope Sparks can somehow play in Cleveland but it looks doubtful. If he can play he'd probably be pretty limited in what he could do. So then we have to hope all the other guys who're banged up can regroup for at least one game in the tourney and pull the first one out. An otherwise stellar season is headed toward a pretty disappointing finish and it's not really due to a collapse in play, it's due to injuries and fatigue. Can someone step up? Windham? Nah. Cleary? He has the athletic skills but not the basketball savvy yet. Bumb? We're playing with maybe 6 guys." (LOL) I don't care who they put on the floor, the Zips can play down to the competition so the the Zips have to play well to win this game and clinch the 2-3 spot. Groce and staff will find know how to take advantage of whatever situation presents itself. Without Sparks, maybe a bigger night for Freeman. Groce was running some nice plays for him against hapless WMU.

Groce wisely kept going to that well and WMU defenders helped all night by being late on the pick and roll and having their back to incoming pass. Not a whole lot of in game adjustments by WMU. 1981 grad
It is senior night for X and Hankerson. Congrats to our seniors!! It has been 5 years since we had a player stay with the program for 4 years, Jimond Ivey. Next year we will hopefully have two 4 year players, Freeman and Tribble. The new transfer rules have certainly done a number on players staying with one program during their 4 years of eligibility.
