Guthrie Gone?

Good. I had hopes for him, but the lazy decision to schedule OSU on the road after Kentucky paid us $1.0 million to get out of a game was the turning point for me. It was the least creative thing he could have done.  Akron needs someone who can get money into the revenue stream some way other than whoring out the football program and make that program better.

With all the problems and challenges associated with Akron athletics, this guy chose to focus on a new logo…which I contend is the least creative thing I’ve ever seen. He did it because it is on the check list of things AD’s do to fill their resume (I grew University gear revenue by 5889% with my new branding).

Don’t get me started on his last basketball coaching hire at UWGB that impressed Akron enough to hire him.

So glad he's gone. But not supremely confident we’ll pick a winner to succeed him.

I bought a Nike golf shirt with the new logo on it and the word AKRON under it. The shirt itself is really nice. I found it interesting that they had to tell you what the logo meant underneath of the logo itself. People are supposed to know what the logo means without being told. It never says NIKE under the swoosh.

BTW, the logo was very creative......for Arby's.

I have concern a new AD would try and fire Moorhead and we’ll be starting over yet again, continuing the death spiral of suck. Just want to watch some winning Zips football in my life.

Joe should get one more season for financial reasons alone. Akron has a sane OOC next season with a chance to gain momentum for a good season. A new coach would be less able to exploit this opportunity and Akron would suffer. Knowing this and with my experience as a Zips fan, I predict Akron will fire Joe after this season, start the endless building process over and miss out on exploiting a favorable schedule next year.

Confirmed on his X page. I think this will significantly increase the possibly that Joe is not the coach here next year. Either he resigns or is let go by new AD. The big problem is timing. How quickly can they hire somebody new and then  the new AD and Joe need to determine if they are a good fit for each other. That all needs to happen pretty quickly based on the recruiting/transfer portal cycle.

That was my thought as well. Almost every new AD wants to make their mark on football - or whatever the major program is at the particular school. I went through all the coaching hires for G5 turnarounds from 2021, 2022, and 2023. If the new AD thinks he/she is going to come in and immediately make a splash hire, they are in for a rude awakening with the resources we have.

Bu doesn't this kind of give the coaching staffs a "free pass" card for at least another season, as the new AD gets to know their strengths and weaknesses?  Maybe women's soccer, volleyball, baseball coaches are breathing a sigh of relief for the foreseeable future, even Joe?

It will take a month, minimum, to hire a new AD. The season will be over by then. The new one isn't going to fire Joe on day one. The only way Joe leaves will be on his own in January after coaches turn over.

Baseball coaches aren't going anywhere even with a new AD

'24 season wasn't amazing but there are some really good young players that did well this year and the coaches brought in a great transfer/freshman class with the '25 class looking great as well

I know it's kind of a tired topic with the logo, but this one is indeed my favorite. I also liked the A-roo but it wasn't really instantly recognizable as a kangaroo. Looked a bit too much like a donkey. But the Z is so unique, there are only two colleges in the country that start with a Z and I don't think anybody would confuse us with Zane(sville) community college nor Zaytuna college. There are over 100 institutions of higher learning that begin with A, and more than a dozen Division 1 football teams. For a logo you want something that is instantly identifiable, connected and has some uniqueness to it. I thought the Z was fantastic. I hate the rationale of going back to an A to be more connected with the community. I think that was a load of crap. Long live the Z!

Don’t hate this but not a big fan of it either. I think a new logo, or any Akron branding, should include a kangaroo. Such a unique mascot with so many branding opportunities to use but the new “A” totally disregarded it.

I will always be team Z! You can make the logo with your fingers, it’s too good

I love our new A logo. I wasn't happy about switching from the Z as I had been wanting the U to use a Z logo for about 20 years. However, I loved the new A logo the instant I saw it. As far as letter logos go I think it's perfect.

Having said that I think we should use the Z as a secondary logo on occasion.

My favorite Akron logo (if it ever was an official logo?) was the old 1980-90's cartoon Zippy

A cartoon kangaroo should absolutely be part of the marketing efforts with a direct appeal to children.
