egregiousbob
How long will it take the local newspaper to report this news? I'm guessing not before 10:30 am.
MDZip
Also not reported on ESPN yet. I would think that would be noteworthy. RIP Gerry.
clarkwgriswold
Gerry was not a great college head coach. He was a great guy in general. He was 43–53–3 at Akron. Sadly, that's pretty good in comparison to recent Akron football.
egregiousbob
It could be argued that he was the first of a string of "Faustian bargains" that have put UA in its current condition.

They had a pretty good spread too. He talked. Had some of the players attend. I still have the "Movin' A' I won at one of the lunches. Sadly his brand of football was outdated. But, he did recruit some good players. I think he recruited Jason Taylor among others. Check me on that.
Let'sGoZips94
One of the nicest human beings I've ever met during my time around Akron. Genuinely kind and sincere person. He will be missed.
egregiousbob
Nearly noon and still no mention on Ohio.com...or gozips.com. Reminds us how good national newspapers are. Edited November 12 by egregiousbob

zippy-claws
"The Boys played hard!" was his standard response first thing out of the box at press conferences. I used to enjoy talking to him at Green Hills Golf Course in Brimfield where he "worked" as a starter after The U. What stories! He would always stop where I was at basketball or football games and say Hi and kibbitz for a time. Great Guy.

Faust showed up and played by himself all the time. Everyone liked him and he treated everyone well. I don't think he ever had a membership though. He just showed up and played.
Spin
I really liked the guy, he was very friendly. I bet he was a great fundraiser judging how he talked to people. An awesome big time high school coach/recruiter, a lot of us thought he could translate that to college football. He was a very nice man. Maybe too nice to be involved with big time college ball. Maybe that’s been Akrons problem, hiring great guys who aren’t ultra seedy recruiters. Rest In Peace Coach
VDizzle12
I worked in the athletic department back in the 2010s and Gerry was one of the nicest people I met. He was always walking around talking to everyone. He had some great stories from his time at Notre Dame and was always so grateful for his coaching opportunities.
dre22era
Hired straight off a HS Football Sideline to coach Notre Dame. I wish we now did the same thing hiring Tim Tyrrell from Hoban. RIP

Section210Zip
Gerry was a great man. He genuinely cared for everyone he met. I was very fortunate to get to spend some time with him over the years. As others have stated, he could tell some stories and was very funny in doing so. The world could use more Gerry's in it, not less. I feel Gerry never got the respect he deserved from us fans. If you look back, he still has the best single season in '92 going 7-3-1 since going to D1 as well has the best win % for his career here. .426 as D1 and .441 over all

Amazing, this was 32 years ago. All Akron had was the Rubber Bowl and a work out room in the Natatorium. Faust actually provided hope to Zips fans. There really was hope for the program back then. Just a few more pieces and we would be on our way. And then the failure of leadership hit and here we are today. 1981 grad
I have 2 memories of Gerry Faust: First, at a frozen yogurt store on West markets street when I was with my wife and young child and Gerry Faust comes up to our table and starts talking to us. Afterwards, my wife ask me if that was Gerry Faust. I answered Yes. She then ask me if I knew him. Nope. Never met him before. He was just a super nice guy that would talk to anybody and loved Akron. The second memory was at Kent in a game where Akron blew the game and an Akron fan started yelling at Gerry that he sucked as a coach. One of his children got in the fan's face yelling at him that his dad worked his ass off to make Akron a winner and if the fan did not shut up he was going to shut him up. I thought there was going to be a fight in the stands. Rest in peace Gerry.

blueandgold
I have a couple fond memories of Gerry. The first was that I always remember him taking the team over to the band after games, win or lose and having them sing the Alma Mater as the band played. I thought that was a really classy, student relationship building thing to do. The second memory is from the late 80's, early 90's when I used to work at Dilly's Drive In Restaurant on Triplett. He used to come in after practices at the Rubber Bowl and order food. We'd talk for 20 minutes sometimes. Such a nice friendly guy.
