We HAVE TURNED THE CORNER

Recommended Posts

after our game with the golden flashes I'm ready with my w/l prediction for next year.

8 - 4 with Norton

6 - 6 without him

it would help if we replaced a couple of teams already on the schedule with two games against new mexico state.

whats your o/u on the amount of nil money a halfway decent team will have to offer Norton in order to get him?

Unfortunately, I feel like there is no way Norton comes back. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it. He'll get a really good NIL deal from somewhere and Akron can't afford him.

I'll go with 5-7.

There is a lot outside of just the players and coaches that has to change before I believe a corner has been turned.

The Zips had a really good win last night, but that's short term. If the Zips played as well last night against top tier mac schools, they would be going to a bowl, but Kent has a way of making teams look better than they are.

Isn't it sad that this is what college athletics has become? It's just another free agency market. I wish there were a better system in place to compensate student-athletes.

They need to show up next week and play a really good game against Toledo. Obviously a win would be ideal and prove that maybe, just maybe, things are changing but playing them tough is a must.

Rooting for Ohio tonight. Toledo not playing for anything next week would be ideal.

If we beat Toledo next week then I'd say a corner might have been turned. Beating a team that might be the worst team in all of division 1 (including FCS) that we were double digit favorites against doesn't really mean much.

It's too early to predict what our record would be next year. I'll make a guess once the transfer portal period is over.

Nice to beat KSU. But, please curb the overall enthusiasm. Coming up a 7-4 Toledo team that just got beat by one of the 2 best teams in the MAC. They are in a bowl game. Don't know what their attitude will be on Tuesday. If you can beat them that might change the equation for what happens the next day. But, a sign of progress would be beating a really good MAC team, finally. Stay tuned.

$35,000

Taking this in a slightly different direction - when Konata Mumpfield ditched the Zips for Pitt, he flat-out gave up the last couple games. His body language and effort screamed that he was headed out the door.

By comparison, Norton is balling-out. He's had zero drop in production or effort over the last few games. That gives me a little hope that he might stick around if Joe was here in 2025 (which I believe he will be). If he does leave, I'd have good feelings towards him because he gave us his best on game days despite the dearth of Zips "W's".

+1. Hard to say how motivated either team will be. If we had beaten a Buffalo and one of BG/WMU/NIU we could be playing for a bowl game ourselves. With another strong performance on Tuesday, the corner may at least be within sight. Big portal season coming up..

Think now Moorhead should stay. We got 4 wins and finally making progress with his system. The new ad doesn’t have time to hire a new coach since it will be too late as we haven’t hired a new ad yet. I think Moorhead should get a chance to winning record in rebuild year 4. Or I can see him leave for OC job in NFL if he doesn’t like our new ad. Just hope we keep him and keep building our players. Restart doesn’t make sense back to 1-11 seasons.

Given the ongoing budget crunch it seems we could almost skate for a year without hiring a new AD to save some $$ and have the current support staff and acting head run the dept., along with any extra involvement needed from Pres. Nemer who himself has some sports background. The wild card being if JoeMo decided to leave we might have to go for a year with an interim HC and/or make a hire via committee. Not sure if it's realistic but just a thought.

Ten years ago I would have said it was unrealistic. Now I would have to say it isn't ideal.

Of next years OOC opponents, Wyoming was on the bottom ten waiting list, UAB was mentioned plus we have Duquesne. Throw in Nebraska, whom I'm not going to say we would beat, but they are definitely lower echelon Big Ten not like Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State, all of whom we've played in the last decade. That is a damn reasonable OOC schedule to try to get the Zips off to a good start. Feeling a little more hopeful for next year.

We are looking around the corner, but have not turned. Around the corner is a tunnel. The tunnel has a light at the end. It's either a clear hole out of the tunnel or a train coming at us.

The next few weeks will be instructive. If Joe stays and we do well next year with support from the University, I would call it turning the corner. If Joe leaves in the next few weeks, we face a coaching hiring decision without an AD in place and the machete of budget cuts ahead with not enough money to hire a decent coach. This could spell a coaching hire worse than iCoach. We are talking about Kent State level bad. That light at the end of the tunnel is a train at this point.

Still think Joe should be fired?

In the absence of a new AD to do it, unless Nemer is willing to step up and commit to Moorhead that the University will commit the resources to make the program competitive, why would he want to stay if offered a high paying opportunity elsewhere?  That "despite the resources - or lack thereof - that we are provided" statement was not coincidental.

Just heard during the Ohio State game that Joe Morehead is a top candidate to watch for the Michigan OC job. I really think he is gone unless there are some big changes in the football budget - and I don’t think that is going to happen.

6'5" RPO QB Bryce Underwood is a JoeMo wet dream.
