Just heard during the Ohio State game that Joe Morehead is a top candidate to watch for the Michigan OC job. I really think he is gone unless there are some big changes in the football budget - and I don’t think that is going to happen.

If he goes all bets are off for 2025. Possibly a lot of his recruits would bail. All new staff. Too bad.

Yep, and yet another rebuild, the Zips 6th in 20 years.  I'm sure a bunch of quality candidates would sign up for that.

Exactly, a perennial losing program with no student or community support and a bare bones budget. The only guy they could get is someone looking for their first head coaching job - and that might be a stretch.

Worse, you end up with a useless nobody like Kent.

If Moorhead is hoping to land another P4 HC gig, he’ll be back in 2025. I still believe that’s the case and if so, he needs to complete the turnaround. Moorhead can leave any offseason he chooses and land a high profile OC position, regardless of his record as a HC here.

Here are some reasons why I think he’ll return despite having limited resources:

- He’ll have a starting QB return for the first time since DJI. We never got to see DJI progress in Moorhead’s system due to injury. If Finley flipped the TD/INT ration by only 2 or 3, we are talking all-conference.

- 4 out of 5 starting OL return. It was the youngest starting OL in conference play. I know some have been disenchanted with the OL, but here are some facts. For the first time in Moorhead’s 3 years we rushed for over 100 yards per game. The OL has also drastically improved in pass protection. Sacks have dropped from 63 in Arth’s last season (2021) to 56 in Moorhead’s first season (2022) to 46 (2023) to 30 (2024). None of that is elite, but it’s all headed in the right direction.

- The defense has improved in conference play, especially in points allowed. Arth’s last year allowed 35.3 (2021). Tibesar’s first was 30.4 (2022) to 28.4 (2023) to 26.6 (2024). Again, not great, but headed in the right direction.

- The 2025 schedule is MUCH easier than the 2024 schedule.

- The majority of the team will return - barring a mass portal exodus.

Unless Moorhead is just done fighting the constant uphill battle, I can’t see him leaving when he could potentially make a bowl (or more) in 2025.

What's your take on one of JoeMo's best friends & WR coach JD Brookhart joining the Summit Circle a few weeks ago?  Two day's after Guthrie was let go, actually 🧐    When I saw that I figured JoeMo was not planning on going anywhere... but I can be naive.

Great info…the major wildcard here is the portal. The minute some kids have some success (whether real or imagined) they want to set off for greener pastures. Sometimes it pays off but sometimes it blows up in their face. I assume there will be some very tough meetings this week between players and coaches. Some players will hit the road on their own and many will be told to hit the road. Buckle up, I think it’s going to be a crazy portal December.

Timing could be coincidental, but I doubt it. Have to imagine Brookhart sees that the program isn’t far off after spending a year on the inside.

You’re right, I’m sure we’re going to lose a few players that we don’t want to lose. Every school does. Pretty good sign that no one has publicly announced they are leaving as of yet. Edit: 30 minutes later we had our first portal entry.

That said, we still have some rising juniors/seniors on the roster that probably won’t contribute much and they may be told to look elsewhere. Not to sound callous, but we have to shed some spots anyway due to the upcoming 105 roster limit.

Glad you mentioned that. Do you know the new rule and can you explain it? I always thought it was 85 scholarships and 105 roster limit. Are some schools now going to 105 scholarships? If so, what is the new roster limit?

Before the FBS changes, it was an 85 scholarship limit and generally around a 120 roster size. The new rule caps roster size at 105 and will allow schools to decide if they want to stay at the 85 scholarships or increase the scholarship allotment up to 105. In essence, this really hurts walk-ons and the ability to field scout teams in practice. The portal will have an insanely high amount of entries this year due to the roster reductions. The SEC has (at least momentarily) decided to keep scholarships at 85. I haven’t heard of any decisions from the other conferences yet. I thought the MAC made the decision to stay at 85 scholarships too, but now I’m not sure if that was correct.

You're reading way to much into this. Brookhart's Summit Circle announcement had nothing to do with Guthrie's departure. Most of those announcements take place weeks after the commitment was made.

From what I understand the Zips are going to 105 scholarships and splitting into a Blue and a Gold team.

The intent is to double the revenue from P4 OOC games and pay off the stadium debt.

Week #1 is -

Akron Gold vs. Penn State ($1.9 million)

Akron Blue vs. Florida ($1.78 million)

Week 2 is a west coast trip. USC and Oregon are the rumored opponents. $4.1 million in total revenue.

More details to follow. Dr. J is also in negotiations with Kent to loan players in the event too many Zips get injured in the first couple weeks. Lots of outside the box thinking going on from the interim AD.

Actually more than three have hit the portal. I get your point, but this isn’t just an Akron thing. Every team will have several kids hit the portal - it’s the new world of college football.

Actually, the Supreme Court has issued the remedy, but nobody is following their instructions.

Every fanbase thinks the world is ending and this hurts their team more than anyone else. It's just a new reality that everyone has to deal with and whoever can learn how to take advantage of it before the others will succeed.

Part of this working at a MAC school is bringing those recruits back that you recruited out of high school and went elsewhere, and you have the connections and foundation to bring them back on the second try. A big part of why high school recruiting will still be important

I can't believe you didn't mention the Zips 2 for 1 and $500k contracts coming up with Alabama and LSU.

Well, first of all he doesn't have to be looking for a "P4" HC job. We may know that soon. The portal has already started to open. We still have to see how many others bail. They are losing key D players to graduation. In this day and age its hard to evaluate a team's overall roster until the dust from the portal has settled. What may look good in December may not look so good in April.

I am HOPING that Moorehead can keep most of this group together through 2025 and see if he can get them to maybe 5 wins in the MAC.

I don’t believe Moorhead is looking for a P4 HC this year. He surely knows that isn’t a viable option unless he turns Akron around. Moorhead has spoken glowingly about coaching in the SEC and I would imagine he’d like to have that opportunity again. My point to the OC conversation - and I’ve said this in the past - is that his name will be attached to a position every year regardless if he is interested or not. His success as a HC has no bearing on if he’s able to become an OC again.

As far as the portal goes, I attempt to update the 2025 MAC thread on a daily basis. I’m a little behind right now due to signing day activity, but it’s more accurate than any of the recruiting sites, as none of them are ever 100% when it comes to MAC movement. Years 2023 and 2024 can also be viewed under the recruiting section.

I’m not concerned with Moorhead’s portal recruiting. Yes, he’s had some misses, but so does every team. All-in-all he’s blown portal recruiting out the water while at Akron. What is encouraging is that his full classes have increasingly gotten better during his short tenure here.

My concern is - do the budget-cutting bean counters realize this? Or do they just see the disparity in wins/losses as Joe has worked to pull the Zips out of the deepest abyss any D1 program has ever seen?

Joe returned to Akron for a lot of reasons that had nothing to do with football glamour and money, and more to do with running a D1 program, while being there for his family. That remains valid. If we’d just treat the guy right I think we could hold on to him for a while longer.

Giving him his training table back so his offensive linemen can be an athletic 325 pounds instead of a skinny 285 pounds would be a great start.

There are few Joe Moorhead’s looking to coach Akron, and a ton of Arths and Ianellos. For once, could we not blow it?
