The Zips head to Bowling Green Friday night to kick off the MAC season with the 5-7 Falcons.

6'7" senior forward and St. Vincent- St. Mary alum Marcus Johnson is leading the Falcons at 17.3 ppg.  He transferred in from D2 Wheeling where he  was 14th in the nation in D2 scoring' 6'2" junior guard Javontae Campbell is second in scoring at 15.8 ppg.  He's a JUCO transfer from Northern Oklahoma.  6'9" senior forward Sam Towns leads rebounding at 7 rpg while contributing 6.3 ppg.  Towns, who went to Ohio U as a freshman, hasn't played since 11/23. The Falcons were predicted to finish 5th in the MAC by the MAC Preseason Poll.

Happy New Year to Zips fans!!!  First post of the new year.  The game at Bowling Green starts at 6 and is on CBS.  I assumed the Princeton game was at 7 and missed it but could not have watched it at 1 anyway.  I have no idea what to expect from this Zips team.  I think that most Zips fans feel the same way I do.  The non-conference schedule was not a killer and we certainly did not kill it losing 5 games.  My only impression thus far is that I have been underwhelmed by the transfers from the bigger programs.  Hopefully, this team will get better as the season progresses and the MAC is as bad as everyone is predicting and we get to Cleveland with the shot at the NCAA.  If this team plays better defense and gets better on the boards it can be a good season.  Considering the non-conference home schedule and our record there is very little excitement about this team and my only prediction is that the Zips will be playing to a half empty arena when starting their conference schedule at the JAR.  Hope I am wrong.  Go Zips.

This is very basic and maybe an oversimplification, but the Zips lost to 5 better teams.  Arguably, Milwaukee was not better and the Zips were off that night.

I was encouraged by something Groce said in his angry Princeton post-game rant.  He said this is a great group of kids that's getting better.  No better time for it to all kick in with MAC play starting.

It's been a long time since I've seen this little excitement heading into a MAC season.

Truly hope Groce and Co. re-think scheduling next season and realize that the dates and locations of the games (not necessarily the opponents) crushed  fan interest.  I liked the 3 game tournament when it occurred but now realize that spreading those out over a few weeks would have been a much better option.   Also, the academic calendar (no students until 1/12-13 for this year and next) is another pitfall.

With any luck, some of these like Milwaukee and Princeton are home and away deals.
