Will Groce leave?

That is information that is privileged due to the donors requesting anonymity. I will honor my commitment to the source and not go into specifics. Regardless, there is a concerted effort to do something, anything about the JAR.

Attendance has dfinitely dropped off for soccer.    You write about sustained success for the last 20+ years.  However, Akron did not win an NCAA soccer game for a 5 year period. (2019 to 2023).   Also, there has been very little done to promote Akron soccer to the students or the Northeast Ohio soccer community.

I think attendance has dropped because enrollment has dropped.  When I went to Akron there was a student body of 27K.   Now I hear it’s barely 12K.   Graduating fewer alumni.   I think a lot of MAC schools are facing this issue.  I think only Ohio & Kent are over 20K in student body.  I think Miami is close(17K) but they are private. Correct?

a lot of urban universities enrollments are declining.
look at YSU, CSU.

When I started this thread I was looking at IU and UVA job openings.  Then I thought JG wouldn’t get a look but if Creigton’s coach left.  Would that be an intriguing opening or Matta. Is Butler attractive?  Dayton? Drake?

those conferences can usually get at large bids.

However, from what I see the student attendance now is the highest it has been in well over a decade.

I plead complete naivety on this one, I’ve been to the JAR countless times, but is the state of the JAR really a deal breaker for Groce? Or is this primarily a fan issue. Groce doesn’t care about the seating and bleachers does he? If he wins we come, when he plays Kent we come. It has nothing to do with recruiting as he’s proven already with the retention he’s had and the portal guys he’s brought in, many coming from places with top notch facilities.

Sure a refurbished or brand new facility shows a deep level of commitment but it could also drain resources from elsewhere.

I would think, in no particular order, salaries for his asst pool, NIL, funding for travel/tournaments, nutrition and perks for the athletes, and commitment from the University on things Bud has been paying for e.g. marketing AND ongoing operational support at the highest levels of the MAC are the things that would be much more relevant to him staying or going.

I just want to add an item to your list, recruiting. Funding for travel certainly applies to this, but I think it’s worth being more specific. Most people don’t realize the time and expense that goes into it. I don’t know how Groce goes about recruiting at Akron, but at Illinois he was flying a private jet all over the country during his so called “down time”. Even with the help of staff and the Fear The Roo Collective to narrow down good prospects, there is no substitute for face time with a player. Especially on their important nights such as state championships. This one on one interaction is an area Groce absolutely excels so the more he can be in the room, the better.

Miami(OH) is a state university like Akron.

Why don't we just start "John's Next Endeavor" or "Keeping up with John and Dustin" and get it over with.

My favorite part of this is how the thread title about Dambrot referred to him as "Ol' KD" for YEARS until the end, when all of the sudden THAT WAS TOO DISRESPECTFUL! AND WE SHOULDN'T BE MAD AT HIM ANYMORE! and it was changed to just Keith.

Groce mentioned at the Watch Party that their family moved to Fairlawn mid-season and joked they still hadn't unpacked everything. Doesn't sound like a coach planning to leave.

Way easier to move if your stuff is already boxed up. 🤓
