Zips OC Promotion

I think it's already time for a separate thread for this. My questions are:

 

1. What are the chances the NCAA pisses on it for a team using an unauthorized coach, however benign it may be? (Maybe the AD already vetted it?)

 

2. Does the OC get a gameday polo/outfit to match the other coaching staff? (I would assume so)

 

3. How soon does another school copy this, given the attention and season ticket sales boost?

 

4. Is there an alternative prize or is it transferrable if the winner doesn't want the spotlight or feels unqualified to act as OC? It seems like it would make a huge difference if the "right" person wins it and the "wrong" person does not.

1) If the NCAA comes down on this promo after so much success, the backlash will be against them, not Akron.

 

2) No idea but this would be a nice touch.

 

3) Too late for most schools to copy this. Probably will see some copycats next year, maybe to a lesser extent late this season, but Akron being the first will always be referenced as the first. 

 

4) I hope they rig it and make sure a celebrity wins it. That would ultimately be the best for the progrum attention wise.

I thought about this too but then you're running the risk of alienating the real fans who may have bought tickets with hopes of winning. Ideally, you could pair a real fan with a celebrity to do it as a team.

I’ve thought about this as well. Could you imagine the attention if McAfee won? What they should do is livestream the actual selection to make it authentic and then also somehow turn that into a money maker.

I mentioned this in the other thread. There should be 2 winners and at the very least they should co-develop the game plan (would make it even cooler for the fan to be able to meet the celebrity). Could even make it 2 drives in the game (1st drive of each half?) and have it be a competition between the 2 winners for the most successful drive.

Fox Sports 1's First Things First (arguably the best afternoon sports show) talked about this on air for five minutes of their two hour show. 14:25 into video until the end of video is the Akron part (was five minutes on air because they aired the Goodrich Promo on Akron Zips Youtube channel during that segment but cut it out afterwards when doing their own youtube video).

After watching the AJ Hawk part, I think someone from the McAfee show winning would be absolutely incredible. Like the one cast member said, they would come down a couple days get to know the players...  the coverage and publicity would be INSANE !!!

 

Might not be as easy to set up a tailgate party as I thought it was going to be all summer now !!!

Doing some napkin math. It was said that Akron sold out it's suites for the first time in program history. The stadium only has 16 suites available for public sale and one has to assume a number of those were already sold. Let's assume this promotion sold 4, which would be conservative. Let's also assume it sold 50 or so Club Seats. Very possible it could have been more as this promotion brought attention to the program. It's obvious the biggest jump is the GA tickets as people are treating this as a closed $75 lottery. I don't think it's unrealistic if 2,000 "entries" were sold.

 

Suites 4 X $15,000 = $60,000

Club Seats 50 X $515 = $25,750

GA 2,000 X 75 = $150,000

 

All totaled that would be ~$236K in direct additional revenue. That's about half of the $500K the school said they wanted the athletic department to erase from the deficit. That's not even factoring in any increases in merchandise, sponsorships, or donations from alumni who now feel more positive about the school and/or program. Not to mention a chunk of those 2,000 are actually alumni or locals. Some amount of them could be persuaded to renew.

 

Not to mention all the free advertising for the school at a time where seniors are deciding where to send their applications. Not saying anyone would pick Akron based off a promotion, but it might lead a few to give the Akron website a look whereas they didn't consider it before. Then a few of those stumble on a program or something they like.

They need to pass out prop gameday headsets or something like the 1st 1,000 fans get an Akron OC Headset sponsored by Turtle Beach, Logitech... something like that.

With Pat doing College GameDay one would have to think it would be a scheduling conflict for him to actually do. With OSU/Texas playing there is no way College GameDay won't pick that game. Maybe they would let Pat off that week or have him join remotely.

@kreed5120 you just reminded me that his show a lot of times will broadcast from a location on Friday. Its not always where gameday is. I wonder if there is a chance they come to Akron.

This is what I was thinking, especially with him flying private. Could easily do a show from Akron on Friday as he "preps" for his gameday duties then fly up to Akron on Saturday to do the calls. Some of his crew could stay in Akron, too. AJ lives in Columbus.

Gotta wonder if they don't do Akron on one of the Tuesdays - it's not the day of the "playcalling" event, but who knows.  That this is even a consideration...

I don't think it will be rigged but it opens up all kinds of possibilities for future ticket holder contests and celebrity in-game involvement.

At the end, Goodrich mentions companies have contacted Akron about a jersey sponsorship.
