My take on Groce is that the only time I feel his disappointment with the Akron program is that no matter how good the team, we play to an arena that is only half full except for the Kent game. He always encourages fans to show up to the games and considering our home winning streak, we should draw better. The people on the board know that Akron does little to nothing to promote Akron basketball and the half time show of 3 or 3 frat basketball was dismal considering that was our biggest crowd of the season. I hope the pressure that he felt at Illinois is fresh on his mind because with a new program comes the pressure to win. Hoping Groce stays in Akron. Go Zips.

Which best describes your feelings on the MAC scheduling model?

Yard work, shopping, watching TV, etc etc etc. Any number of things. If there's not a reason to go to the local college game, there's any number of excuses that can easily be given even if there's no NFL team nearby. Also I'm originally from Knox County. Cow tipping isn't that far away from Akron... -
I'm just going to assume Groce is gone until we are told otherwise. I think he's a perfect fit for Akron and the MAC, but wouldn't blame him if he moved on to a program with more money, better facilities and more prestigious conference. He may have hit his ceiling with the Zips. Not his fault, ours. I'm assuming the fact that nobody wants Travis Steele proves that he's a fraud?

I stand corrected. They do have the handful of midweek games, more Thursdays but yes, they do. If those schools don't give the people a reason to come on Saturday, they'll still find something else to do even if they don't have an NFL game on Sunday. So I don't think that holds much water. -
A couple things. The Sun Belt still plays some midweek games. Not as many as the MAC, but they still get played. Also, the Sun Belt has much less competition, particularly in sports, compared to the Midwest schools in the MAC. The reality is if Richard in Richfield has the option of either going to the Browns game on Sunday or Akron game on Saturday, he's going to the Browns. Most people don't have the ability to commit an entire weekend to make an all day event out of both. Schools like Marshall, Troy, Arkansas State etc don't face those same challenges.

2025-26 Post Mortem and Looking Ahead to 2026-27

I do think it's clear he has interest in jobs elsewhere. How much interest is uncertain, though. -

Maybe, but not a huge one given what he has built here. I don't think anything is clear. -
If he's truly interested in USF, to me that's disappointing because it signals he just truly wants out. I thought it would be a "perfect job" kind of scenario to pry JG away. That said, it's not like Jon Rothstein or Schefter are reporting this. We're looking at Samurai Hoops and "Higgins Halal" twitter accounts.

It's a better job then Akron. Whether it's marginally better or clearly a step up is to be debated. I still think Claymann makes the most sense there as Groce has never coached outside the midwest and from a recruiting stand point he recruits Cincinnati and Cleveland fairly heavily. Not sure if he has the same connections in Florida or how he would do if fully reliant on the portal.

Buckle up for the craziest coaching carousel in the history of coaching carousels. Rumor is Bill Self will be retiring. UNC and Kansas will be open in the same offseason, and it potentially doesn't end there.
