  1. Like Will, my son is also a Junior at Hudson. They've both played in a school-sponsored rec basketball league over the winter. Will could dunk a basketball last year, as a Sophomore. That alone makes him unique among the local HS soccer standouts. Great shooter, and ball handler. From a competitive standpoint, he has no business playing in the rec basketball league ...he's head and shoulders above any of the other kids. If he wanted to be an all state Div 2 guard, he could do it. He's the best athlete in the Hudson 2019 class. He lists at 5'10", 165. But he's a "thick" 165. Not the typical slender HS soccer player. He's strong. He could easily be an elite HS football running back or slot receiver too. For the Zips I think you'll see a player that is strong, aggressive and does things at a very high speed. Great coordination. Just a gifted athlete that happened to focus on soccer.

  2. I get the same feeling. I once had a bad cheesesteak in Oxford that terrorized the lower half of my digestive tract for 3 or 4 hours. The feelings are very similar.

  3. You've brought this up a couple times now, but I don't really see the issue with starting him. It was reported Cotton had the flu. Its not like he played starter minutes. His 10 minutes played even with 3 guys fouling out and 2 overtimes should tell you all you need to know. I also think there is value in bringing a scoring spark off the bench, and Lucas Smith is never going to give you that. Utomi not being a scoring threat is a bigger problem than Lucas Smith starting. He needs to step up. You could argue him starting caused us to get off to a slower start thus lose the game. You could also argue Jimond's missed dunk, Parrish's missed wide open bunny, and Utomi's good looks at the end of regulation and OT1 was the cause as well.

  4. Great article from the Wooster Daily Record: University of Akron president: College still good return on investment WOOSTER - Imagine a university where online gaming is a varsity sport, where Fridays are given over for career fairs and guest speakers and where the president pops up at everything from intramural basketball games to the tuba section of the school band...

  5. None of the players have any morning classes. Monday-Friday mornings are reserved for practice. Staying an extra 2 nights on the road is not an option. Too expensive. Besides, nothing beats sleeping in your own bed!

  6. I always have this overwhelming feeling of dread wash over me when the Zips travel to Oxford. It's no different today as I struggle to concentrate on work while knowing the Zips really, really need this win tonight.

  7. All hands on deck. I look at Smith's role from the perspective of minutes played as opposed to whether he's starting, and he played only 10 minutes in a double OT game, so I am not too concerned. I guess I'd rather have Kostelac available at the end of the game and prefer Smith using up his fouls then have Kostelac using them up early or a guy like Parrish being used in the post.

  8. I hope that Groce's experiment with starting Lucas Smith was a one shot deal. I have nothing against the walk on but we just do not have enough offense to start him. Klac and Utomi have not been reliable scorers. We struggled in the start of the first and second half with this starting lineup because all of the pressure to score is on Jimond and Duvivier. I stated in the last game that the key to us winning is getting production from Klac, Utomi, and to shoot the 3 ball at 40%. It didn't happen and despite an amazing game from Jimond we lost. Winning on the road after a tough loss will be difficult for this young team.

  14. You can't possibly think knocking off Duquesne meant that much to them, right? They're a top 25 team and the cream of the crop in a down A10 this year. They struggled mightily all game, shooting around 30% from the floor at the half or something like that, and won on a buzzer beater 3. Anybody with a pulse is going to be excited for a win like that, and the fans helped will them to victory in that second half. My bet would be they wanted to see their team remain in the top 25 and undefeated in the A10, not because of a strong desire to beat the new-and-improved mighty Dukes of Duquesne. Dambrot has the Dukes playing at an exciting new level for what they're used to at Duquesne. He's a good coach, and I don't think that has ever been denied, but he has a ceiling that he has yet to break through. This was a typical Dambrot loss, no matter the state of the program, and that's what my comment was in regards to. We saw it plenty of times here at Akron - Nevada, VCU, NIT games, MAC tourney games, etc. And I'm telling you, the state of the A10 this year is aiding the appearance of the quick turnaround at Duquesne.

  15. OK, since people insist on going there, lets adjust Len Pauls career totals in an era with no shot clock and no three point line AND no dunks allowed.
