  1. Wanted to hit on two points on this post: 1st - I noticed Tim Scippio (early commit and currently unsigned) congratulating players for committing. Based on that I would count him in to sign next week. 2nd - I'm still worried about not bringing in a scholly QB (at least of yet) in this class. Lack of depth could realistically end up being a problem once again after next season. It's probably more likely than not Kato leaves sometime in his career if his dad has any say. Kelley seems like a nice back up based on what I've seen, but is gone after next season. Johns has 2 more years, but one would think he came here to play. Not only did he not play, he switched positions. After next season, it's very possible Ramart could be the starter with a true freshman as his back up.

  2. I think this is the first time Utomi has struggled. He was a huge scorer in high school and didn't have any real expectations placed on him last year. This year, the exodus of so many players combined with his early season play against inferior opponents sent the expectations of him through the roof and I am sure he bought into it to some extent. Now he's being forced into strange territory from jumping center to start the game to guarding the other teams' bigs. I certainly hope it doesn't push him towards a transfer and that he sees reinforcements are on the way. He could be a big part of the future.

  3. IMO we should give a scholarship to a QB every year. I thought that was recruiting 101 but we haven't been doing so. And not doing so came back to bite us & derail our season just 2 years ago.

  4. I am usually an optimistic guy but when I look at this game I see: A Zips team that has lost 3 straight. A Zips team that just lost by 21 at home. A Zips coach who indicates post game his players are not playing with any toughness, energy or tenacity. A Zips coach who indicates post game some of his players are not coachable. A Zips team where a non scholarship player with limited offensive skills is playing 30 minutes. A Zips team that has not won a road game or any game away from the JAR all season. I guess to put this in perspective, I think our chances of winning this game are about the same as one of our geriatric season ticket holders hitting the rim on the $25,000 half court shootout. Of course, deep inside I still am rooting that this team will turn it around and win their first road game. Go Zips!

  6. When I heard Groce on the post games, he keeps coming back to the same theme, his players are not playing aggressive enough to win basketball games. He wants tough defense and guys who are going to get pissed off if their man scores on them. He wants guys who are going to win every lose ball and go for every rebound. Guys who are going to play harder when the other team scores. Last year I thought Antino best fit this mold. This is a guy who did not like to lose and if we started losing he wanted the ball and was going to score. He always played aggressive defense. Jake Kretzer was another guy although he was limited athletically and by injuries but who would often come up with that tough rebound and was always diving for that lose balls. However, the Zip player that I thought best exemplies what Groce is looking for was Jamie Bosley. This guys motor never stopped. Has the same body build of Duvivier and very aggressive. I would like to hear from other Zips fans on who you believe was the former Zip that would best exemplify what Groce wants on this team. Jami_Bosley_-_YouTube_(360p).mp4

  8. From (OU grad) Peter King today....Reich told me the kernel of the idea originated from an industrious Eagles quality-control coach, Press Taylor. Said Reich: “Press has this, what we call this vault of trick plays. It's an immense vault, so every week we go into Press's vault looking for plays.” Taylor, it appears, found the play in a meaningless Week 17 game in 2016. At 1:10 this morning, The MMQB’s Kalyn Kahler found a play from the Chicago-Minnesota game that doubtless led to Target left bunch, Philly special. Bears running back Jeremy Langford took a direct snap from center, quarterback Matt Barkley lined up behind the right tackle, and wideout Cam Meredith circled back behind Langford and took a pitch from him. Barkley leaked out of the backfield into the end zone. No one covered him. At the 11-yard line, Meredith tossed the ball to Barkley, two yards deep in the end zone. I would like to hear more from Solich (or whomever put it in against the Zips). Somebody has to ask today right?

  9. I don't know how we can jump to conclusions on how this will impact the program without knowing the target numbers.

  12. Uplifting as always, Skip! I don't usually by into the "thrown in he towel" "coach has lost the team" memes because I don't know what is going on in practice or in the locker room after the game. However, someone pointed out the low # of assists in the last game and if we see that continue and players just driving to the hoop at will with no results I will begin to wonder. I appreciate that Groce comes out for interview even when they lose. And I appreciate when he said he's not afraid to lose if it means benching players who refuse to hustle. Very Norman Dale and Indiana of him.
