  1. Groce gave Maishe Daily the longest of long leashes to get on track last season. Towards year's end, he cut his minutes. Same thing with Trimble this year. He's had an incredibly long leash for his incredibly subpar 3-point shooting year. And he brings nothing else to the table aside from his erratic, freakish 3-point potential. I remember a quote from Danny Ainge a few years back. I always felt it was one of the simplest, truest statements regarding players and playing time - "It’s not a coach’s job to give opportunities for everybody. To me, it’s a player’s job to make that coach feel like he needs you on the court to win — because every coach wants to win.” End-of-February/March is winning time. The time to ride out a player's season-long slump has expired. Dawson and Tribble give the Zips the best chance to win.

  2. Great interview. He discussed the roster situation and how it’s changed since Florida. After those egg-layings against Fordham and App. St., they realized the offense needed to pretty much be overhauled. As far as the more recent stuff, he noted that the chemistry is as good as it has been all year and obviously the team is playing some of its best basketball. They discussed the Freeman story in depth, and how he began to really show his ability toward the end of the championship year on the scout team and he’s been a big value to the program far beyond the court for all three seasons he’s been with them. Said LCJ was one of the first guys to notice that Freeman was for real. Finished with talking about Kent and the tournament. Notes the Zips swept them last year of course. Said he’s been watching the Tom Brady Man in the Arena thing and has shared some of that stuff with the guys, most notably that Brady lost 3 Super Bowls while winning those 7. Spencer asked the right questions and was very gracious, it’s worth a listen if you can find it!

  4. @Spin, actually, we'd have two parking decks on adjacent blocks: The West Campus Parking Deck and the Lock 3 parking deck (connected to the Barley House). But for me it's not necessarily the walk from the Carroll Street Parking Deck to the JAR. (Since we're an urban area we should expect to have to park & walk no matter where we build.) It's that the Carroll Street Parking Deck does nothing to facilitate any downtown activity. It's not walkable to/from Main Street and it's right next to the expressway. So I drive to the Carroll Street deck, park, walk to the JAR, watch the game, walk back to the Carroll Street deck, and drive home. It's a Zips game and nothing else. I'd love for Zips games to feel more like RubberDucks games.

  8. Agreed with exception to the JAR having "character." The JAR is a plain box; an empty canvas. There's no reason it can't be the foundation of a decent arena. There's also no reason it can't become a community asset. Don't get me wrong. I'd love a new arena, but the JAR is a facility with some potential.

  11. Wow. I like it. A nice early test. They must not have had room for Point Park or Wheeling.

  12. I hope he's really hurt then. Find it a bit morally wrong if we're going to be lying about a player being hurt. If that is common, its news to me. If it's widely accepted, then loosen the rules.

  13. I'll make a wager he's a redshirt freshman next year. This happens all the time. They'll claim he was injured and get the year back, he only played like 13 minutes. If he wasn't going to get a redshirt they'd be using him

  14. Not worth burning the redshirt at this point I don't think

  15. Groce coming up on 92.3 in a couple of minutes. Spencer German, who used to help out in the Zips video department, is filling in for whoever the usual host is.

  16. Here's hoping there are a lot of dads who told junior they'd get to a game this year and take advantage of this last chance!

  18. Would ya look at that? The science changed. Glad freedom of choice is reinstated. Hopefully the JAR has a good turnout on Friday.

  20. @dre22era Exactly - like you said- except for the empty side I love UMBC’s arena. Extend the seating around it’s entirety and that would be perfect in downtown. Additionally, I’d bet the U & city would want to encorporate some loges into the design.

  21. Also UMBC's old arena which they still have and now use for Intramural sports is set up just like the JAR

  22. Give me this in Downtown Akron I live 10 minutes from UMBC. Knew an assistant on the staff that upset VA in the NCAA Tourney who is now on that same staff at Utah State. Opened in 2018 i have attended many games including my son attending basketball camps there the past 5 years. Aside from the empty side I love the layout. 4,654 (basketball) 5,500 (concerts) Wild how that arena looks much bigger than the JAR but seats less Also there is an auxiliary gym/practice court in the basement. UMBC is a 13,000-student university

  23. Agree. Not sure if there can be trap games this late in the season when the teams, well at least a Groce team, is prepping for the tournament with each game. Looking at last year's record, I think Zips lost 2 games going into Cleveland. But I really don't count last year. LCJ had a baby during the last half of the season, and they never knew when they were playing. What I do note from last year, is that Ohio was pretty fresh having come off a long COVID break and then played 3 games (winning 2 and losing 1 badly) and then missing their last two games before Cleveland. Makes me think that there may be a benefit to having fresh legs and a clear head. It feels like the Zips season started fresh after Trimble left, which is a sad commentary on Brian. Looking at last year, there were many games where he was the top scorer over LCJ. Continue to play tough and play right with a good attitude. The seeding is set. I wonder if the final game against CMU will decided the Chippewas' fate.

  24. Wow, the box score listed attendance at 8900. It was a large crowd, but had no idea it was that many!

  25. That arena literally is the JAR, just with more complete & modern seating. I believe you could modify the seating in the JAR to pretty closely mirror the Samford arena, while maintaining the character and atmosphere of the JAR. I hate the concrete corner spaces in Sanford's arena; it looks weird and "commuter-ish". Get some engineers in there (I thought we had a good Engineering program?), Move the corner doors to the middle, directly behind the baskets. Wrap the lower level seating around, adding corner sections where the doors used to be, and proper end zone seats on either side of the basket. Remove the track, and bring those seats forward. Convert every seat to be decent quality chair backs, and let's get back to rocking the JAR.

  26. Simply brutal. Even the chair-backed seats are rickety & made of a chintzy plastic. *sigh*

  27. I remember him being on one night when LeBron was at the game. A (3rd-consecutive?) Kwan 3 forced the other team into a time out & LeBron was celebration dancing out on the floor. If it had been anyone else the refs would have probably given the Zips a T.

  28. It needs a track and some glass rails. Those upper seats are way too close.

  29. A little off topic but yesterday was a bad day for the house or the book keepers. The AP 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th teams all lost. In the top 10 teams only Duke at 7 and Baylor at 10 (who knocked off KU at 5) won and Villanova sitting at 8 didn't play but is still salting the loss of there last game, a loss to UConn. I guess not just the MAC where any team can win any night out.

  31. I did some thinking on this and I wouldn't be opposed if they keep with the 'Roo somewhere in a new logo. I like the newer "meaner" looking 'roo they have here and there, however, as a primary logo, they could perhaps do an even newer/meaner roo? The "A-Roo head" logo is kind of cool, but it would need an overhaul/more intimidating look. I do feel the old logo on the helmets during the Charlie Frye era was a bit much. I don't know, just thinking out loud here. Slow news in the world of Akron football, just trying to keep some discussions going lol.
