  1. Totally in over his head from the jump, as would just about anyone. The entire strategy of bringing back baseball and adding WLAX was a total cluster*** by Larry Williams & Co. Thank goodness for the Skeeles family for donating the funds to at least give us a D1 facility. But UA baseball is not currently setup to even be average in the MAC. UA half-assed the revival to this point. Big opportunity here for Guthrie to right the ship.

  3. College football, huh? 😞 I guess if you're a MAC-first fan, it's irrelevant. They'll never be more than coffee and doughnut money here. I remember several years ago Chris Spielman talking about walking into OSU's stadium and seeing his jerseys everywhere, and in the bookstore, and at shirt vendors and on the giant stadium banners...and he's basically just got a college scholarship out of the deal. I get it. He's the show, and gets little for it. Although getting national exposure, great instruction/preparation for the NFL, great facilities etc. also have some worth. But to me, the "old days" of underhanded, back-alley payments were somehow less slimly than what's going on now.

  4. Ryan Day: We need ~$13M to keep current roster in place. Might be out of the local tattoo parlor(s) budgets, but I'm sure they can scrounge it up.

  5. Al Michaels wore a sleeveless tank top on the Pat McAfee Show. The show is called Cutoffs and Coffee, so I think it would've been acceptable to wear an Akron cutoff.

  7. What are the odds a camera or two will allow us to watch the turf replacement remotely? Seems like a good suggestion some of you who have contacts with the decision makers should push. I really enjoyed watching the stadium construction.

  8. Personally, I think having a known name as the head coach was probably a good move to get the program up and running again. Obviously things didn’t go exactly as planned with year one being shut down due to a pandemic. I do think the team has improved each year but I always wondered how long term of an investment Coach Sabo would be. I like him but he may not be the best college baseball coach at this point. His name, though, did put eyes on the program that might not have seen them otherwise. The next hire is a crucial one for the program. They need a solid recruiter and game manager with a successful college coaching background and positive attitude.

  9. Ben Iannachione, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is a fascinating guy. Great appearance on the podcast Cutoffs and Coffee. Moorehead has brought in some great people. Episode 43: Ben Iannachione, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Akron Zips Football Team - YouTube

  11. He does like to hit. Knocks runners off their feet. Nice size at 220 lbs. and he's stacked: And he can really move! Look at this:

  12. Another solid pickup. He’s physical, a thumper, and falls right in with our other LBs in this class. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/8251856/616c79c02aa6e603b8a541c4

  13. You thought through this and still decided this would be a good thing to post about a potential student athlete. Congrats on being a foul human.

  14. Was on campus today and stopped by to take a look. Nothing happening at Infocision stadium. Lots of activity at the JAR where they are filming scenes for LeBrons Shooting Stars movie.

  16. Love the potential of this pickup! I’m not sure what the deal was at Memphis, but Nelson was a stud in high school. Rivals had him rated as a 5.5 - 3 star when he probably should have been 5.7 (their 3 stars are from 5.5-5.7). He’s more in line with Cam Threatt. Nelson has long arms, flips his hips well, and is excellent at getting his hand in to break up the pass. He, unlike some of the CBs we have on the roster now, has the burst to cover ground quickly if he gets disconnected from his man. Nelson will come down hill and hit as he displays plenty of physicality. Not all of these transfers will pan out, but no one can rightfully argue about the physical talent and potential the staff continues to bring in.

  17. Joe Mo: "Too... Much... P5... Talent... Not sure... How we'll... Manage..." So far, that's the only challenge Joe Mo has faced with the TP.

  18. EKU Bio Played in all 12 games his freshman year. Started all 11 games last season and had a couple INT's (the Zips only had 6 as a team in 2021). We aren't exactly overflowing with talent on the defensive side of the ball. I would expect him to be in the mix for a starting job. Bright kid...offered by Cornell, and was Scholar Athlete of the Year at his HS.

  21. The MAC at one time was a very highly regarded soccer conference with numerous teams getting bids. That has gone away and now it is sh*t show with Akron and three other teams who do not want to grow their programs. Add to this mess Chicago State and Akron loses valuable strength of schedule points. Guthrie has got to get us out of the MAC. Jared would rather be an independent and build his own schedule than play in this MAC. Our program is at a critical crossroad. The school's decisions have got to reflect that we will keep soccer at the elite level no matter what.
