Catching up during a very busy weekend for Zips MSOC. AKR 5-1 WSU FT Zips dominated throughout. Josef Paulus played his best match as a Zip to date. He tackled well and distributed well with a high rate of pass completion. His left-footed screamer of goal put the Zips in front, a lead Zips never relinquished. That ball would have cleared the stadium but for the crossbar. Paulus is learning how to keep his fire under control without extinguishing it. Way to go, Joey! Jonas Buechte again steadily directed the defense. But for just a few minor breakdowns, the defense was clean and efficient. The PK resulted from an unfortunate tackle in the box by Joel Sangwa. It was not a dumb foul as is sometimes the case, simply unlucky. The subsequent conversion ruined GK Mitch Budler's clean sheet. But overall, the defense was cohesive and disciplined. Freshman Ashton Kamdem is a standout in the making. Two aspects impress: His foot speed and his willingness to employ either foot. His long-range bomb of a score from the right side with the left foot will be remembered for some time. It was a popular topic of conversation during yesterday's festivities.3 points

Iowa beat South Dakota State 7-3. 2 safeties and a FG for Iowa. Nebraska struggled with North Dakota. Akron winning that game Thursday was big. SFU came with everything. They were fast, well coached, and talented. At the end of the day, the W is what matters and we got that.3 points

These next 2 games are tune ups for Liberty. Liberty is a HUGE opportunity to make a statement as a program against a legitimate G5 school. We are much more talented than we were last year, and I'm hoping JoeMo & Co. can get the system more in place by that game. Stay healthy, and let's see what happens.2 points

Can you please explain your thought process as to how more access to the biggest trophy in college athletics wouldn't benefit every FBS program?1 point

Apparently they could. According to this ESPN article in the last seven years every conference except C-USA would have qualified for the playoff. The MAC had only one, #12 WMU in 2016. So the odds aren't great but they are possible.1 point

I hope a MAC school could qualify for the 12 team playoff. That alone changes the MAC, in my opinion. Can be a selling point to recruits that their football isnt 100% irrelevant, that they can in fact compete for a title. If MAC schools essentially dont qualify, that is a huge damper1 point

I was thoroughly disappointed with the game day experience. I thought with JoeMo being hired, the excitement would have been ramped up. It was the exact opposite. I was sitting low and at one point he tried to get the crowd involved and looked disappointed. Akron needs help in this department. I wish they could get more fans (I hope that will come with winning...), but they need to have a D1 feel for the fans who do show up. Sadly, my wife turned to me and said she felt more excitement at her high school games than Thursday night. So, yeah. Glad for a W on the field though, even if it was ugly.1 point

Agreed. I was impressed with SFU. They had the two best QB's on the field that night & definitely came to play. In watching the ESPN replay the announcers were more than impressed with the poise, accuracy, and command of the offense which both SFU's QB's possessed while being awfully lukewarm on Irons (and they were being gracious). I know Ball Coach JoeMo was playing to win & obviously feels Irons gives us the best chance to do so. But -v- MSU I doubt the game will be within one score in the 2nd half (hope it is!) so I'll guess JoeMo will have the opportunity to experiment with Undercuffler & see what he brings to the table in game action. As an aside, NCAA teams should be allowed one scrimmage per year. High schoolers scrimmage and so does the NFL, why not NCAA? The first NCAA games of the year are often... rough around the edges.1 point

Random thought, but we were missing what should be 5 starting caliber players on D, and probably at least 2 starters. Amankwaa was our best CB last year and he wasn't dressed, Richardson (who was sent to media day) wasn't dressed, and I don't believe Ravonte Holt was dressed. Robinson & Threatt were both dressed, but I don't believe either played at all (not even special teams IIRC). Wonder what's going on there. Hopefully a couple of those guys can get back and be contributors or starters.1 point

Did anyone notice what I noticed? There's no signature attached to this apology. No one wants to accept responsibility! SO Akron!1 point

Bowl season has become stagnant. The bowl games are absolutely meaningless, hence why so many starters are opting out. I don't watch most of them anymore. Thousands of fans traveling for a meaningless bowl game vs tens of thousands for multiple playoff games is a big difference. This is a good thing. If you don't want to watch it - don't. I will be watching these.1 point

Thanks for late info, but that could have been discussed in the long message the AD sent out a day or two before the game. Maybe it was too much to add to acknowledging the new digital ticket system problems and the lack of new A merchandise? Doesn't really explains all the action I missed on the monitors while standing in line at the concession stand. Not sure what that has to do with a bad scoreboard. Oh well, baby steps I guess. We're obviously suffering from a lack of financial support the past few years.1 point

I also went back and rewatched the game, but I did so by viewing the the TV image in a mirror to form an even more reflective take. Would it have killed somebody to give one or two of the other RBs a few snaps?1 point

It certainly does take Jimmys and Joes. I know it's only game 1 but that OL play didn't look much different from what we were treated to under Arth. I expected MUCH-improved coaching staff + better players = noticeable improvement, especially against an FCS opponent (don't care if they are decent FCS). TOTALLY onboard with Joe and staff (thrilled to have them here) and just have to accept they need time to coach this current group of young men up and recruit more of what they're looking for in the coming years.1 point

Another tip. After you save and open your tickets, take a screen shot of the ticket with the QR Code. You can then easily text the tickets, and or parking pass to anyone in your group, rather than using the app.1 point

To be more specific, Akron has never beaten an FBS non conference opponent at InfoCision 2009: Indiana 2010: Syracuse 2011: FIU 2012: UCF 2013: Louisiana 2014: Marshall 2015: Pitt 2016: App State 2017: Iowa State 2018: N/A 2019: UAB, Troy 2020: N/A 2021: Temple 2022: N/A0 points
