Scarborough's next move...
a-zip replied to urbanpreppie05's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Skip - it is sad to me. When I played back in the 80s my family and friends actually looked forward to staying at the Quaker Square Hilton, they had a great brunch that I was able to join them for the day after our game - special time for me. I think it was cool that UA bought it (do we own it?)…..it is a historical part of Akron. If there are not profitable stores, shut em' down, no biggie, smart move…..it is not a commercial hotel….its a dorm right? Hopefully we can maintain it and it could potentially be touted as one of the coolest dorms in the US!! IT COULD BE!! On a separate note, if you want to find a hotel IN Akron…..good luck. I got disjoined from some of my buddies while in town last visit and got a room at Akron City Centre Hotel. Wow, it is creepy (possibly haunted) And as Sportsjunkie mentioned……a recruit doesn't give a rats ass about a store a Quaker Square being closed. He wants to see a full stadium, pretty girls……and let TB close the deal. Simple -
Good hire.

Scarborough's next move...

I will keep asking the question when you all bring up UA attendance potential. How many times in the last 100 years has NEO shown support for UA? Win/lose/weekday/weekend/bad weather/good weather/good opponent/bad opponent/nice stadium/bad stadium/good marketing/bad marketing..... Where does this belief (wish) come from? -

Yes Dave it would be the answer….PERIOD. If you are saying it is a wish that NEO would come to games, then you are saying it is was an irresponsible decision to build "that stadium". You know what is simple? To sit on a computer and bitch and make excuses on a blog. Plans WERE created and executed - The main one was Building Infocision because people's excuse was about how nasty the Rubber Bowl was (Capt K, save me another iCoach/TW rant because our basketball team proves winning doesn't seem to matter either). We now have Terry Bowden (plan B - pretty f*&ing lucky in my book). There was a guy name Jim Tressel involved who knows a thing or two about football in Ohio. If NEO showed interest, The INFO would not be such a financial drain, faculty would not be giving us such bad press during bad times, we would not be embarrassed for having the WORST attendance in NCAA, we would have a new AD by now, the existing team would be more inspired, we would have won more games, and we would be getting better recruits. Maybe, just maybe it would justify building an equally nice arena for our winning basketball team. IF PEOPLE WENT TO GAMES. PERIOD. BTW - you talked about your not wanting AD candidates that didn't want to take on challenge. Did you think about the AD candidates laying out their plans and discovering they were not realistic based on the schools financial situation? Not sure I would move my family to Akron to jump on a potential sinking ship when there are many other opportunities. This all goes back to Mark Cuban's philosophy on school WASTING money. I applaud Dr. S for dealing with a shit sandwich and making tough decisions. BLAST AWAY at a-zip -

Proenza response really does not say anything….it was a CYA to protect his legacy, that is all. He got people to build a beautiful campus….I won't disagree. What Cuban talks about is ROI. The ROI is for students as well as the schools. Lets put the elephant in the room on the table - INFOCISION. That is the main ROI Dr. S has to deal with it right now and I am quite sure he understands he needs to make it work. The answer is simple…..NEO needs to go to games. Take one section from a FUCKEYS nosebleed section (10K people?) and go front row to a Zips game. Problem solved. The ROI students have to deal with is getting a degree. At the end of the day, if they get their degree 100% on premise, 70/30 on premise/online…50/50 it doesn't matter as much anymore. There are CEOs that have degrees from the University of Phoenix for god sake. I have heard all the excuses in the world for not going to a UA game. When I played for the Zips ON WEEKENDS…. the excuse was that we played on the same day as the FUCKEYES and people planned their day around watching them….and that was why our attendance was not good. -

and Captain Kangaroo………in the last 100 years…...in the history of the world……history of Buchtel College/University of Akron/Ohio Tech….how many games has the city of Akron had attendance over 20K? And You still continue the delusional talk about moving to a bigger conference…………………...HEL…LOOO?

I give you the facts you asked for and you respond with a childish cartoon…..I'm assuming you copied and pasted a cartoon that was sent to you. In order to win, you need top recruits. In order to get top recruits you need compelling reasons to choose a school. Taking a recruiting trip with 5-8 people at the stadium ain't gonnna turn anyone on. All my past post are starting to come to fruition…….I told all of you if people don't start supporting the school we would be in big trouble……TB will leave, Amato will leave, and KD will leave. MARK MY WORDS if all the BS excuses you people keep using continue unfortunately I will be right!

Here is a little proof......... We ended 2013 on a 3 game winning streak.........we opened up against Howard (which I would qualify as "dregs" in your formula but was still the home opener Attendance 9104 We then go to Penn State and give them a scare at Happy Valley. A respectable showing. We are now 4-1 in our last 5. Marshall comes to town (which I would call a semi-marquis team) and a team that finished 13-1 last year Attendance 13,000 (I bet majority Marshall fans) We are now 4-2 in our last 6. We go on to upset Pitt at Pitt. Great showing, one if our biggest wins in history. We are now 5-2 in last 7. We come home to play Eastern Michigan Attendance 8416 We beat Eastern Michigan. We are now 6-2 in our last 8. Next home game, Miami O (run of the mill?) Attendance 8223 (wins are stacking up but attendance is getting lower ;-) Saying that winning at Akron in Basketball or Football is the hollow argument to me.

You just highlighted one of the reasons why this would not be a desirable job. One of the main factors I use when considering a job is who I am working for. As skip mentioned these guys probably did some investigation on the position, the financial situation and the administration and decided to take a pass. If the reason people withdrew is because someone else got the job, why has an announcement not been made.

Well the good news is we are still getting quality players that will more than likely stay more than a year or two. We are 4 years removed from getting gutted by having 7 players drafted in the first 2 rounds of the MLS draft (absolutely incredible)…..we also lost Mattocks, Trapp and Yedlin early. Our style of play and great coaching still remain.

I like this years team. I predict a deep run in to the NCAA.

This situation we are in is exactly why too much transparency and leaks are not good. I have said this before and I will say it again….in situations like we are in right now leadership has to keep things under wraps until they are ready to explain the who, what, when, why and how a change is being made. I have been in leadership positions with companies primed for acquisition and/or restructuring. When rumors fly and information gets out…..it can become a mess. You know what, in most cases the rumors and information that get out are generally always negative…..it is human nature. People get distracted, start updating resumes, morale goes down and all the work that has been done to make you a prime candidate for acquisition goes down the tubes. I am not saying challenging authority is bad and leadership should not be held accountable but going to the media and spreading rumors without actual FACTS is devastating. Our hiring and GREAT athletic director has never been so important to UA-OPU and the top candidates are withdrawing. NOT GOOD!!

Looking back through Larry Williams bio - looks like he was recruited and played for our very own Gerry Faust. C'mon Gerry……get him in here….lets get some positive things going here.

I wish it simply came down to it being our choice. Hopefully he will choose us.

If I were in his position……I would want to keep my mother-in-law away from any influential people A hut in Alaska would be good for mine. -
Wow! He would seem to be a great hire considering the state we are in.

Scarborough's next move...

Ms. Liska, the University of Akron has only 14 percent of the students graduate in four years. • Only 38 percent graduate in six years. Hmm, I think it is time to take a different approach With regards to the "outsourcing" aspect of bringing in Trust Navigator, I think this seems to be a prudent move and a likely trend. We have already seen this with the outsourcing of the food services. Akron runs its own dining services and has done since the university was founded in 1870. Per the report, Akron food services employs some 80 full- and part-time food, catering and retail workers, not including students. Now, following a tightening budget, due in part to declining enrollment, the decision to outsource dining services has come to the forefront. Outsourcing is a common practice today. I work in technology, when businesses outsource their IT initiatives to us (because we are experts) they are allowed to focus their efforts on their core competencies. It provides tremendous cost saving since you are not having to employ and pay benefits to your own IT staff - and allows you to continue with growth and innovation. -
E.J. Thomas to cease producing shows
a-zip replied to Blue & Gold's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
What deserves emphasis amid all the criticism, and yes, many things could have been handled better, is that Scott Scarborough arrived a year ago with an item at the top of the agenda: Fix the university’s sorry finances. Put another way, he didn’t create the problem. Others did, most notably, the university trustees, inviting a whole other discussion about how these largely political appointments are made in Ohio. The new president deserves to be assessed on the way the budget process has been conducted. It has been more inclusive than many admit, with the participation of faculty leadership, including the union representing faculty members. Colleges have engaged in strategic planning, as part of setting priorities and a foundation upon which to build. What the University of Akron finally has is a clear and responsible framework for spending. That is a real accomplishment. For many, it may not seem so, but it offers a sustainable way to get better. Finally something positive -

I am fine with the faculty speaking out but what they spoke about made no sense. Also, the cuts are not all on the academic side.
