Out punter looked good and with all the practice he gets, maybe he will make the NFL someday! I would have left before half-time if it weren't for the band. The band seems to be putting in extra effort to keep the fans into it, too bad they are the only product worth watching!

Performances like today certainly won't encourage me to renew my season tickets. Next year we play the other Ohio team and I see an EMU type beat down coming. Good thing basketball season is fast approaching!
-
Are we playing OSU today? You would sure think so based on the 24-0 score and total domination by the Bobcats.

WKU is in the ESPN bottom 10 at number 1 after week one. Wonder if the Zips can take their spot away? My brother went to WKU, so now the two of us can see who has the worst FBS schools of 2010. Too bad they don't play each other to see, but I think Akron has better talent and of course WKU MUST have a better coach. My prediction based on what WKU did against UK: UK - 63 against WKU, I'll pick 56 against Akron. WKU - 28 against UK, I'll pick 13 for Akron (2 TDs, 1 missed PAT, plus 2 missed field goals). Based on the scores I came up with, WKU is slightly better than UA. I'd take UK and the points too, its a shame I'm not in Vegas to place that bet!

While watching Butler in the last couple of games I noticed they have one thing in common with the Zips - long droughts of not making a field goal. However, while for the Zips that would mean no points, at least Butler got to the free throw line for a few points during each drought. Also during these stretches they don't give up many points either. And one big difference - Butler plays great Defense, much better than the Zips. Last night's game was the first one in the tournament where one of Butler's opponets exceeded 60 points and they only did it by 1. I'm not sure how much of this is coaching and how much is having good defense players. They do use the Miami style of working the shot clock on offense so that is part of it too. You would think it would be easier for a school like Akron to build up a good basketball program faster than Butler. We have lower academic standards and a much bigger student population (which should lead to more alumni support). However Butler doesn't have to split resources with a football team so maybe the main focus being on basketball helps too.

If Butler can get this far, you would think Akron could at least win a few tournament games. But we need to get there (NCAA tournament) consistently first.

Guess we aren't the only ones struggling with OU's guards
Zipgrad1990 replied to Quickzips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Totally agree. Gtown had height, OU had shooters who are amazing athletes. It would have been a very poor match for us. All I want for Christmas is a guard who can shoot like that! I think Akron would have gotten the 13 seed if they had beat OU in the MAC tournament. But chances are we would have lost anyway considering how bad our defense was throught the tournament. -
I think you meant to say "WE BEAT AN NCAA first round winner". Although I don't consider the play in game a first round win. We did beat an NCAA winner.

I know one is for Eric "Cricket" McLaughlin. I think the other is Joe Jakucibk.
-
Poor showing by the Zips (massive understatement).I guess their really is something to RPI and SOS. Look how Can't State took us apart both games. The only good news is the #3 seed seems to have an easier path to the finals.I hope we face Can't State again and stomp them in the finals!
-
Poor shooting and turnovers don't help either.
-
Good on the boards? Not the game I am watching, Can't is killing us on the boards!
-
Nope they just teased us for a half and let us down as usual. Oh well maybe next year we can finally beat a top 40 team.At least
-
I think only the top four will get bowl bids, although BGSU has an outside shot.Central Michigan (9-2)Northern Illinois (7-4)Temple (9-2)Ohio (8-3)

After finishing last season at number 25, the Zips are number 8 in the initial Mid-Major Top 25 Poll:http://www.midmajortop25.com/No other MAC team makes the list, nor does CSU although both are close at 27 (CSU) and 29 (Can't State).

I was annoyed by all the Can't State basketball success over the last 10+ years and their 10 years in a row of 20 wins or more. The reason I was annoyed was I always thought Akron Basketball should have been the successful one as 20 years ago we had Coach Huggins and a program on the rise. Now I see a Can't State football team which has had more success this year then UA and I am slightly concerned that history will repeat itself (doubtful, we don't have a good football coach on the rise this time), so yes I want UA to beat Can't State! Will it make for a successful season? Of course not, but it will take some of the sting out of this horrible season. Akron-Can't is a bigger basketball rivary but even in football it is fun to beat Can't State!

No video for me either and since it is the Akron radio broadcast I am skeptical we will get video.

Toledo is 0-1, and was 3-9 last season. They're up against high school football on a Friday night. That's tough for a MAC program to overcome.Yeah, I think Start was playing Sylvania. Woo-hoo, tough competition there. Actually there didn't look like many empty seats to me, but I may have been seeing the patrons double after a few amber ales. I'd watch the Morgan State game that way if, one, it were televised, and two, it weren't a morning game in HI. Call me a wimp. but at least I wait till noon. Here's to Zippy though The game IS televised on Zips Zone (subscription required). I'm in Singapore so I doubt I'll be up at 2am to watch it live, but I will probably watch it sometime on Sunday.

I'd love to see the Zips shock the world and win this game, however I think we will have to wait until the 19th for the Zips to pick up their first Big Ten victory in this century. My prediction PSU 48 Akron 24.BTW I am currently working in Singapore and the Akron-PSU game is actually on cable here! The game starts at midnight (we are 12 hours ahead) and is replayed on Sunday at noon too, unfortunately I am on night shift Saturday night so I will record it and watch it when I get home. -
It is easy for me to pick my second favorite MAC team - OU. That is because I was born in Athens and both my parents and 1 aunt and 1 uncle all graduated from there. I picked Akron over OU when I went to college based on better ratings for the EE program, having friends in northern Ohio, and also due to being a bit scared of the party lifestyle at OU keeping me from graduating!Toledo is also a pick as I always admired their football success and they did have Klinger pushing the city of Toledo (reference to Jamie Farr of MASH), plus they are also an urban school like Akron. I agree with the consensus here that another good pick is Buffalo due to they being like Akron and Toledo, urban colleges.

I was a freshman in 1986 and my English teacher (can't call her a prof as she only had a Masters) would not let us skip. She said since we were scheduling conferences that day for the next week, missing on Friday would be liking missing 5 days (that day plus the 4 days of class the following week). Unfortunately in her class attendence counted and for every 2 days you missed it cost you a letter grade. I wasn't willing to lose 2 letter grades to watch all of the game (maybe I would have been if I had known then that it would be 23 years until Akron made it back). We did get to see all of the first half before racing off to class, although it made it that much more annoying having to go to class with Akron up 2 at the half. In class someone had a radio with headphones and we basically ignored the teacher as he flushed us the score on a regular basis. When class ended we all raced to the Chuckery where TVs were setup and caught the last 30 seconds or so, unfortunately by then it was over.I am currently in Singapore on business so the game starts here at 7:25am Friday. I have already taken the day off to watch the game (via Slingbox since it won't be on here), as I don't plan on missing it this time. Hopefully it won't be another 23 years before Akron returns to the tournament since as I told my wife, by then I might be dead!

The BCS will probably never end, its too much money for the Big 6 conferences. I always wondered why the BCS system is not considered a monopoly, I guess they get around that by allowing a non-BCS conference team into the BCS bowls if said team qualifies.Any playoff system would either be a "plus-one" or possibly 4 team playoff neither one of which will help out the non-BCS conferences anymore then today. After all the BCS teams want to keep all the money!

ZEKE had his first TRIPLE DOUBLE......
Zipgrad1990 replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Congrats Zeke! Very impressive triple double. I love the 10 blocks, to me that is the hardest stat to get. Now if he can work on the assists, perhaps he can get a quadriple double someday! We could really use Zeke's inside presence this year. Seems like the Zips have zero inside game at the moment. -
