Let's check in on where our transfers came from and how their team did this season. Isiah Gray - Cornell lost in the Ivy Finals, season over. Seth Wilson & Josiah Harris - WVU got hosed by the selection committee Bowen Hardman - OSU missed the tourney, declined the NIT and headed to Vegas James Okonkwo - UNC should have missed the tourney, but luckily their AD was committee chair. Definitely looks like good recruiting ammo for Groce next season. "We have kids transfer from Ohio State because they actually want to play in March Madness."

Increasing JAR Attendance/Engaging the Fans
tpsjugglerdude replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I went to a game there around 2009 or 10 when Charlie Coles was still there. They had a big black curtain up hiding a whole side of the arena and there couldn't have been more than 200 people at the game. They didn't even really have people working and we just walked back towards the locker rooms after the game and got to see a fun interaction with Charlie telling KD the MAC was his now. -
The math ain't mathing to get 30 wins going into the tournament...

There’s talk of the ACC and Big10 moving to a year-round schedule being backed by US Soccer. -initially inviting 32 teams (ACC, Big10, and West Virginia, Oregon State, San Diego State, South Carolina, Kentucky and UCF) -2 semester trial run “The goal is to alleviate “match compression” in the current, cramped 12-week fall NCAA season, thereby fostering improved player training and recovery while better aligning the collegiate calendar with professional leagues around the world.” This could be a big disadvantage in recruiting for teams not in this trial. https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2025/us-soccer-college-year-round-pilot-program-1234829400/

Those 2013 black jerseys with the twitter handle on the back sure caused a national stir. That season had the best marketing under Brad Swanson. The JAR was packed almost every MAC game.

Can Akron get custom home white pinstripe uniforms for the PCCC game? It would be the ultimate troll.
-
I did an alternate spread of Zips -11 pre game. Easy money. btw, the Zips largest margin of victory playing at PCCC is 66 (77-71). Highest margin of victory all time for the Zips in the rivalry game is 20 from 2022. Will we beat it?

The last time we didn’t have a single P5 on the schedule dates all the way back to last year. -

Hasn't been announced yet, so it's not on that site. -

It's a bummer we didn't get JMU or App, but it's a decent team. Maybe after all the transfers are through they will be better this year than the other two. So now we have: @Arkansas State Northern Kentucky UNLV Neutral game vs Yale Neutral game vs either UTEP or Jacksonville State -
35 to the Spurs.

Yup, posted that one on Monday. Hopefully it's not a nail biter like last year and we take it to them. -

Northern Kentucky comes to town 12/7 -
I'm moving from Wilmington, NC to Delaware next week. I think I'll actually be able to watch the Zips play at Georgetown! It's been a few years since I've gotten to watch them.

The D1 docket is live. It gets updated with schedule information for each team as it becomes available. So far, nothing for Akron listed. https://d1docket.blogspot.com/p/2024-25-dockets-group-of-five.html -

Glad he didn't end up where his dad played. -
Sounds like a great pick up! 11 of 25 from 3 is a small sample size, but I’ll gladly take a 44% three point shooter

I'm curious how much of our high school recruiting strategy is based on making contact with players who we know are not going to come to Akron out of high school, but will potentially be in the portal in a year or two and we want them to already be familiar with Akron.
-
Just curious, but why? I don't know anything about the kid, but last 2 years averaged 3.5 and 6.4 min/game with 0.6 and 1.7 ppg. What am I missing?
-
These players are already in the portal. If a MAC team doesn't take the good ones, they go to a different conference. How is that cannibalizing the MAC?
-
I have two different Zippy bobbleheads they gave out at basketball games a few years back. Bobblehead nights were always sellouts it seemed.

NCAA Tournament- Creighton
tpsjugglerdude replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Interesting tidbit from the article about Freeman. "With 30 double-doubles this season, he’s one away from tying the NCAA record set by David Robinson of Navy in 1986." -

U of Mass Joining Mac in Basketball

What makes you think that? They've been to The Dance once this century. They've only had 5 20+ win seasons the last 25 years, and 0 in the last 10 years. I know the A-10 is considered a stronger conference, but they haven't finished above .500 in their conference in 10 years. It will be interesting to see if their recruiting takes a hit after the move. Frank Martin has shown signs of improving their team, and they are headed in the right direction. It will be interesting to see if he sticks around if he does find success. He will instantly be the highest paid coach at $1.66M in the MAC, well above Groce's $650k. It will be interesting to see if UMASS continues to spend that much in the MAC.
