Nice article. Thanks for posting. Skip, I have thought for years that the first College Football polls should come out around week 6. The preseason polls have proven to be highly inaccurate and seed every team based upon last year's results and conjecture. Very unfair. By the time Boise finally got a preseason ranking high enough to he in position to make a title run, they couldn't run the table. As far as the whole SEC speed thing. . .that usually is part of the discussion when comparing defenses. While the SEC certainly displays a lot of team speed on defense, I think it is exaggerated when we watch because of the fantastic defensive line play. SEC D-linemen are head & shoulders ahead of any other league, IMO. Consistently controlling the line of scrimmage and being able to get good pressure on the qb without blitzing makes fast lbs and dbs look even faster, I think.

The NCAA really needs to implement a 16 team playoff. A lot of arguments about the relative strength of conferences stem from bowl results. The problem is, bowl results don't necessarily mean anything. The only game that really counts is the NC game. All the rest are just exhibition games. Some teams take these exhibition games a hell of a lot more seriously than others and the results don't always mean as much as they are given credit for. See 2013 pre-season darling, Louisville. A 16 team playoff would allow us all to see the best teams play in post-season games that matter.

Do you honestly think NIU is ranked too low? I am certainly hoping they can pull off a big upset in a BCS game, but I gotta tell ya, in a game that mattered, that 3-loss SEC team would smoke the Huskies like a Philly blunt. That is reality.

Speaking of bias. . . There was a conversation amongst Ohio State fans the other day about the possibility of Auburn leapfrogging the Buckeyes following the conference championship games if both teams won. One of the OSU fans said "there is no way Auburn should jump Ohio State because they won games against Georgia and Alabama on pure luck". At this point I had to interject, "kinda like that miracle pass to Michael Jenkins that Krenzel pulled out of his ass to beat Purdue and the interference call on Chris Gamble in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl". If looks could kill.

That is a great observation, LZip. As I have said numerous times on this board bias is a bitch. OSU gets pilloried here for their SOS, but somehow NIU is getting screwed because their undefeated season isn't given enough respect by voters. You just can't have it both ways. My guess is that neither OSU nor NIU are worthy of thier current rankings. I can see teams ranked below each of them that are better. (I am rooting for the Huskies, though.)

Linebacker is definitely not an area of concern. When is the last time we beat out Toledo for a recruit? I can't recall. Nice job by the staff!

Anyone who thinks that just winning is going to solve the attendance problems is delusional. NIU is riding the very crest of the MAC wave. The success they are having is as good as it gets in this conference. They can't sell out their stadium. What's their excuse? Maybe the seats are uncomfortable there like the JAR. My guess is they have a lot of lame students and alumni who care more about the Fighting Illini than they do about the Huskies. I am with a-zip. . .tired of the excuses.

UCF throttles Rutgers tonight. (Yeah, the same Rutgers that Fresno fans count as a quality win. ) Is there any doubt UCF was the best team the Zips played this year? I think the Knights would win convincingly over NIU. Waddaya think?
