  1. As we have said all along, Caleb is a class act.
  2. A couple of interesting matches on other side of the bracket. Louisville/Charleston, which should be a no-brainer. Also, Providence/OSU. If Providence can take of business on the road, then there would be a rematch of the Big East championship with Louisville. Louisville won on pk's, so who knows. It's very tough to beat the same opponent 3 times in a season. BTW, how did the Suckeyes get the seed over Providence (a much better side)?
  3. I agree with mopst of what is being said. However, no matter how much we wish and hope, ICoach will be back next year. Akron is not going to fired him after only 1 season, even if we do go 0-12. In fact, if he shows some improvement next year, 3-9 or 4-8, we might have him around for a couple of more years.

  5. GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7mins. into the 2nd half. Mattocks from Nagbe.
  6. He is 100% right. I hope he can fix it. Icoach is correct. No matter if it is from Glenville, Buchtel, Hoover, Cardinal Mooney, etc., we need to get some of these players to Akron.
  7. Over the years, and I'm going all the way back to the 60's, the soccer matches between CSU and Akron have been fierce competitions. Cleveland State actullay had some very good teams back in the late 80's and early 90's. They are not a fly by night organization. We had a bad game. We lost. As a former coach, I can tell you that this loss will be the best thing for Akron. I would not want to be Michigan St. tomorrow afternoon.
  8. OK, I wasn't addressing that point in my original post, and what you say doesn't contradict anything I said. But since you bring up Ianello's association with losing programs his whole career, you should be aware that the record book contradicts your point. Here's Ianello's career record as an assistant coach prior to coming to UA: 1988–1989 Alabama (SEC): 9-3, 10-2 (19-5). Overall winning program. 1990–1993 Wisconsin (Big Ten): 1-10, 5-6, 5-6, 10-1-1 (21-23-1). Program went from big loser to big winner. 1994–2002 Arizona (Pac-10): 8-4, 6-5, 5-6, 7-5, 12-1, 6-6, 5-6, 5-6, 4-8 (58-47). Overall winning program. 2003–2004 Wisconsin (Big Ten): 7-6, 9-3 (16-9). Overall winning program. 2005–2009 Notre Dame (Independent): 9-3, 10-3, 3-9, 7-6, 6-6 (35-27). Overall winning program. To summarize, Ianello had an overall winning record at four of his five assistant coaching gigs, and in the one where the record was just under .500, he helped turn the program around from a 1-10 record to 10-1-1 in four years. So, while Ianello's career as an assistant is not as brilliant as Chizik's, it's also not one of a perennial loser. Like we've said before, Dave....an Ianello apologist. Are you trying to say by your numbers that the Rob Ianello we know is responsible for turning around ANY program...past, present or future? With all due respect, you're dreaming. Keep spinning, though. I don't care how any of spins this, whehter it is pro or anti Ianello. We will still have him around for at least one year and more than likely two years.
  9. Perhaps there weren't many in the UA category. They were either too good, and BCS caliber, or they were lower level than UA. The thing that is really bothersome is the thought process of some local kids. I read a lot of recruiting articles and the sad thing is that the majority of local kids don't even consider UA unless it is their best offer. There is a real stud DE at an Akron school that is being recruited by every major program. He stated the school he is looking at is a school that every kid dreams and wants to go to. I won't mention the school, because I don't need to go there. He doesn't even mention UA and he is from Akron. Another student from Cleveland Glenville mentions Akron and he says he will check it out because he doesn't know anything about Akron. The kid plays less than an hour from our stadium and he knows nothing about Akron. That is ridiculous. I would doubt that most of the kids in Akron, let alone from other parts of the state, are aware of the facilities UA has. Maybe if they played a high school game, but that's probably the only way. The University has to find a way to get the word out that UA has top notch facilities. As a poster from another site stated one time, Akron is a sleeping giant. We are in the hotbed of college football, yet we are an unknown. The new coaching staff needs to begin an aggressive campaign to recruit kids from NE Ohio. I know Brookhart had a majority of his recruits from our state and western PA, but a lot of them were 4th-tier recruits who saw Akron as a back-up option to BCS and even other MAC schools. If we could even get a third of the FBS-calibre kids in Summit County to stay here, we would be tops in the MAC. You are probably right. Maybe Akron needs to have more camps for local kids only or guest speakers that will lure the kids to at least get on campus. I find it amazing that Akron can't get at least a few studs from the area every year. More camps for area athlets is a good idea. However, the university has to be careful about guest speakers. The NCAA considers guest speakers to be a recruiting tool and it is against NCAA policy. We used to have a group of former athletes in the area and we had monthly luncheons where we would invite speakers and several students form the area high schools. When Akron discovered we had students attending the luncheons, they backed out due to the recruiting restrictions.
  10. There is a flip side to this recruiting of Akron kids. There used to be a coach in an Akron HS that wouldn't even let his kids listen to a presentation from the Zips. They would be recruited and signed by anearby Big East school and inevitably, the kid would not qualify, flunked out or got into trouble during the first year on campus.
  11. Temple 45 Zips 3 RI will call for a field goal when we are down 28-0 in the first quarter.
  12. What difference does iit make now who we would've or should've gotten. We got RI. And we will have to live with him for at least 1 more year and more likely 2 more years before the ax may fall.
  13. Welcome abroad Cody. For those of you that are not going to Halloween Hoops, you get a chance to see Cody played tomorrow night at InfoCision Stadium. firestone will be playing Buchtel for the City title and I'm sure cody will be showcased in this game.
  14. As avid a sports fan as I am, I feel all of our professional sports with the possbile exception of hockey are being forced down our throats. Turn on any TV any night during the NBA season and there is at least 2 games that can viewed. Actually, I think we are well past the saturation point as far as how much sports is on TV on any given day or evening.
  15. DW & I left after it become 35-0. This team just sucks. And I have been more patient than most of you. There is no offense, no defense, no coaching. m What the h**l did I pay hard earned money for fantastic seats at a beautiful stadium to see this crap. From talking to several people today, I have discovered that Icoach is a tyrant and that there is absolutely no morale. Something needs to be done. I can stand to lose if we are in every game, but this just totally sucks. time to go to the neighbors for their clam bake where I can at least enjoy myself.
  16. When JD was coach, there was a definite lack of discipline. Now, when iCoach arrived, he put down his foot and would not & will not tolerate that type of attitude. So, yes there is going to be rebellion of sorts among some of the players. Do you let the insane run the asylum?
  17. To me,finding fault with anyone,is futile. We need to focus on the balance of this season and hope things turn in the right directions.
  18. I'm glad they have that kind of money to throw around. And I really do hope they get their heads handed to them by 'Bama. Because we all know that...
  19. Gaffney Article http://www.ohio.com/sports/105365943.html Not much going the Zips' way this year By Tom Gaffney Beacon Journal sports writer POSTED: 02:30 p.m. EDT, Oct 20, 2010 Here are some observations and opinions about another forgettable football season at the University of Akron: • Change for the sake of change sometimes can be the best option. Experts more savvy than myself have suggested publicly and privately that the Zips need to start junior backup Matt Rodgers at quarterback rather than sophomore Patrick Nicely, who has a 2-11 record over two seasons as a starter. I reluctantly agree, if only for the reason stated above, that change just to try something different might best serve the team. This is not an indictment of Patrick Nicely, who has been asked to learn the new pro-style offense and abandon the spread offense that he has used since high school. He also has been working with an inexperienced receiving corps after the likes of Andre Jones, Jeremy Bruce, Deryn Bowser and Dashan Miller exhausted their eligibility after the 2009 season. Nicely has had to scramble behind a game, but beleaguered, offensive line that has had trouble protecting him. Nicely also has had accuracy issues, completing just 47.9 percent of his passes. So, as an alternative, the move that might provide a spark is to turn to Rodgers, who started three games in 2009 before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Ohio. Rodgers does not have as strong of an arm as Nicely, but it is considered more accurate. He has completed 57.5 (46-of-80) percent of his passes in 2009 and 2010. He also is more mobile than Nicely, which helps because of the line troubles. It might not be an ideal move, but it is worth a try considering the state of the 2010 Zips. • It is not my job to suggest that Rob Ianello be replaced as head coach of the Zips, as some fans have suggested. My job is to try to be fair and accurate in covering the team. Notice, naysayers, that I said ''try.'' That task does not include asking for the job of a coach who has been working for less than a year, does not yet have his own full recruiting class, and is here in a less-than-ideal situation. Yes, less-than-ideal situation. This is a coach who took over a team that won three games in 2009, only two of them over Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. This is a coach of a program that has much to show for its days in the small-college division in a whole different era, but little to show for 23 years in the big-school divisions with only seven winning records over that time. This is a coach of a team that has a large number of players who do not have legitimate FBS-level skills, according to several experts who have shared their opinions with me. Time and results will tell if Ianello and his staff are the ones to lead a program that has the best facilities in the Mid-American Conference, but among the worst in talent and depth. I don't know exactly how long they should get to prove themselves, but I do know one year is not enough. While this season has been frustrating, it is naive to think the blame lies entirely with the head coach and his staff. It is like blaming an unwanted pregnancy on a comfy back seat. It not that simple. • The university is taking a proactive approach to the Western Michigan game on Saturday to head off the potential of having a friends-and-relatives-only crowd at InfoCision Stadium. The game is being designated Kids Day, in which any fan 14-and-under will be able to purchase a general admission ticket for $5. Adults will pay $15. In addition, the game — and all other athletic events — is part of the new marketing program for students called Roo-Wards. Students get into games free anyway but will be able to swipe their ID at all events and be awarded points for attending. Students will be given prizes based on the number of points they accumulate and also be eligible for additional prizes through raffles. No word yet if there will be a contest to predict the attendance against Western Michigan. Or the over-under. • The Zips have eight oral commitments from high school players in the 2011 class, according to recruiting Web sites. From Ohio comes defensive end Dylan Brumbaugh of Green, quarterback Kyle Pohl of Germantown Valley View, guard Travis Switzer of Conestoga Valley, tackle Andrew Bohan of Avon Lake and cornerback Bryce Cheek of Lewis Center Olentangy. The others are linebacker Nick Rossi of Riverside, Pa., running back Karell Bostick of Oradell, N.J., and center John Clay of East St. Louis, Ill. However, that likely will not tell the tale about the new recruits who will sign in February. It has been widely rumored that the Zips are switching gears and looking to add a large number of junior college recruits to provide immediate help. • The unbalanced MAC schedule has not broken in the Zips' favor. It is not a stretch of the imagination to say that the worst conference teams right now are UA, Eastern Michigan (1-6, 1-3), Ball State (2-5, 1-2), Bowling Green (1-6, 0-3) and even defending champion Central Michigan (2-5, 1-3). Of those teams, the Zips play only one — Ball State — and that is on the road. Conversely, the Zips play heavyweights Miami (4-3, 3-0), Ohio (4-3, 3-1), Temple (5-2, 2-1) and Northern Illinois (5-2, 3-0), missing only Toledo (4-3, 3-0) among the MAC teams with winning records. A question to ponder: Is the MAC is imposing a cooling off period for the Zips and Bowling Green? They will not play this season or next season, as part of a two-year schedule rotation. It is generally agreed that Bowling Green reported recruiting violations by the Zips that led to UA recruiting co-ordinator Reno Ferri being suspended and then leaving the program. • Speaking of schedules, the 2010 season opened with losses to BCS members Syracuse, Kentucky and Indiana, which certainly contributed to the woeful start. It does not get any easier in 2011 because the Zips will open at Ohio State on Sept. 3 and will play at Cincinnati on Sept. 17. • As a personal aside, the dismal UA season is not the only sad thing I have seen in football locally this fall. Also worthy of a sense of disbelief are the coaches of a flag-football team in a Medina County community whose players are 5 and 6 years old. The coaches have stacked the team with many of the league's best players, played loose with the rules to benefit themselves, allowed players to intimidate opponents and routinely ran up the score. Recently, one of the team's opponents walked off the field early in the second half because the taunting had some of them in tears. Did I say the players in the league are 5 and 6? And, no, I am not going to recommend the head coach of that team be named to succeed Ianello.
  20. Browns fans do it year in and year out, why can't Zips fans? And how's that worked out for Browns fans? Support your team win or lose. That is a true fan. I couldn't have said it better.
  21. You might be right. But...how many first year coaches have you seen canned? And, it's not going to happen here. U of A has too much money invested in Icoach at this time. Plus, they want to give him a chance to prove himself. One season does not make a career. Ask Al Golden at Temple.
