The priorities of our society right now, for better or worse, dictate that the best college head football coaches make more money than the best college presidents. It's also true that making the most money doesn't always result in the greatest personal satisfaction. We'll all see soon enough where Jim Tressel's personal priorities are these days.

If he wins the MAC championship in 2014 or 2015 he's gone. It's very unlikely the Zips would be that good, but can't say it's a guarantee he will stay until he retires.

Why couldn't we be that good? BG went 5-7 in 2011 and 7-5 with a bowl in 2012. We should expect a minimum of 7 wins next year and a trip to a bowl.

Who would be looking for a 59 year old coach at that point?

Consider the source.

I obviously think the Zips will continue to improve, but I think BG is going to own the MAC (at least the MAC East) for the next year or two.

The last 10 MAC East winners (no repeat champions and every team but Temple/UMass represented):

Bowling Green

Can't

Ohio

Miami

Ohio

Buffalo

Bowling Green

Ohio

Akron

Miami

I don't think anybody has the East locked already and right now I give the Zips as good a shot as anyone (for BGSU, you never know how a coaching change is going to affect a team - ask Can't).

First, lets not get carried away with this years record. These guys will have a bunch of holes to fill, again. If TB gets 'em to 6-6 with 5-3 in the MAC,thats cool. As far as old 'slippery lips' Tressel is concerned,I would be surprised if he came here without at least an assurance that he would at be considered for for a higher level administrative job than he has now. He could get another coaching job if he wanted it after the sanction is up. But, he can certainly sweet talk boosters into giving money to the University if he gets an administrative position. Could AD be a lesser option?

Uh-oh. Looks like BG made a quality hire.

If the Falcons continue to play good defense, Babers is sure to kick up the offense a notch or two. Eastern Illinois' QB threw for 8873 yards and 84 touchdowns the last two seasons.

It would be good, but they can do better. College teams have holes to fill every year. It's the nature of the beast. Getting a program to and maintaining a program at a high level is what good coaches do. Bowden is a good coach. He has won everywhere he has been and Akron will be no different. Considering where this program was, fans should be excited about a 5 win season and going 4-1 in their last five while beating a well established program in Toledo.

Not expecting more is the old cycle Akron has been in for years. Show some signs of life and throw in the towel because some players move on and the new players are not experienced. Poor us. Since they aren't experienced, the coach will need a couple of years to "build" the program further before they can be good again. That line of thinking is absolute rubbish and is not how winning programs respond to player turnover. That moronic thinking ranks right up there with after a few loses, benching everyone for freshmen and guaranteeing a 1-11 season...but we are "building for the future". We would have gone 1-11 this year if we followed that stupid line of thinking that was promoted by more than a couple on this board. At that point, we could have changed our name to The University of Akron Browns.

Just because there is a hole to fill doesn't mean the next guy will be not as good as the previous guy. We should expect from this moment forward to have better players replace the departing players every time there is turnover unless the previous player is someone like a Vic Green. If we don't believe we can replace departing players from a 5-7 team with better players, we have bigger problems than player turnover.

unrelated, but I think it is worth mentioning...the QB at Eastern Illinois has shattered all of Tony Romo's record this season.

Jim Tressel to speak at the Chapel in Marlboro on 1/27/14. Tickets are $10 which includes a dinner. I think Coach Bowden spoke at last years.

I attended this event last year; or was it the year before? It was money well spent. We had complete access to Coach Bowden.

He was gracious and illuminating as well as entertaining. I would expect no less from the debonair Coach Tressel

Exactly. It isnt like Terry will be hurting for money either.

IMO Terry has "been there, done that". And still has the high blood pressure from working at a big school. He looks more comfortable in this setting, where he can build from the ground up his way, without the constant pressure from all sides.

I don't think he wants back in the pressure cooker.

And why (other than money) would a Wake Forest be such an upgrade over Bowling Green? There's no legacy there, when you think of college football hot spots the Demon Deacons never come to mind. Do you see TB making a lateral move like that? For what, to take on big school-type pressure to build a similar program to compete against the top ACC teams?

I wouldn't. Especially if I were Terry's age.

I can only think of one other reason, other than the money. BTW, Grobe was stealing over a million a year from WF. That's reason enough, but since this is a discussion board....

The reason you take a job like Wake is to challenge yourself by competing at a higher level. It's the same reason the coach left Wisconsin and went to Arkansas. Does a coach want to hide in the MAC or challenge himself? The ACC is better than the MAC. It's not a great football league, but still better than the MAC. Not only is the ACC better, but additions like Syracuse, Pitt and the smattering of Notre Dame games makes it even more attractive if you are looking at the competition aspect of the job. Syracuse and Pitt are turning out to be pretty good teams and ND is what it is. I actually admire coaches for taking this kind of risk to see what they are made out of.

If he gets fired from WF, he can take his $1 million buy out or whatever it is and go be a head coach at another MAClike school or a high level assistant at another BCS school. Luke Fickel makes over $600K a year at tosu. I'm sure a guy with head coaching experience could do about the same AND have the satisfaction of knowing he competed as a head coach at a high level. The WF job secures a very high paying job for this guy for the next 10-15 years...the kind of money nobody ever has to worry about their retirement.

Nice little Akron slam to start this one out right. :gun:

When Jim Tressel was exiled to Ohio's Siberian Gulag (did you know that when you translate 'Akron' from old Gaelic it comes out to 'A-place-only-marginally-better-than-Michigan-football'? Look it up, that's a fact.*) for his role in the tattoo-for-memorabilia scandal, many people thought his coaching career was probably done.
