Game 12—Golden Flashes @ Zips

Honestly, I am glad we liked the click in the second half. It got the game over before the rain arrived and also got me on the road at a reasonable time.

We saw how raw Kato still is, tonight. To Kent's credit, their man coverage was far better than our receivers skill.

On a positive note: Saw Kyron Brown after the game and he looked OK. What was his injury?

Some observations on our progrum, not necessarily the game:

  1. TB earned an extension of at least 2, and probably 3, years. Wilson wants stability and TB gives him that. TB, to his credit, has recruited better than ever and we now have youth and depth. All due to him.
  2. We are not playing good football. We are winning, but I doubt we have the fundamentals to beat the really good teams like Toledo.
  3. Milwee is still, and has been, a substandard OC.
  4. Our special teams suck and they won't get much better until TB gets them a new coach.
  5. I can't figure out our OL. I feel they are inferior. Is it talent or is it coaching or is it a combination of the two?
  6. TB does not coach, he manages the team. He delegates to his OC, DC and special teams coach. That is not a value judgement. It is just a statement of fact. If he can win that way it tickles me plum to death.
  7. Kato is clearly our QB. I have not been a TB supporter, but I very much respect the man because he made this hard decision which told TW that you must put the team first and TW's actions did not do that.
  8. Toledo will probably beat the hell out of us in Detroit. I will be taking 10 people there to support the Zips despite this. Miracles do happen.
  9. Recruiting and our future look very good.
  10. Good Lord! I never get tired of beating Kent. Well done Zips. The better team won. 7-5 feels real good. Find a way to win in Detroit.

Very well stated.

For once, I felt like I was seeing some things offensively that pointed to bad execution, rather than bad play calling.  Maybe it was a result of some of Kato's unfamiliarity with some of his guys.  There were several screen plays (when Kent started blitzing repeatedly after our early lead) where the pass wasn't completed, or an open field block was missed.  And many, many downfield throws where the pass just wasn't where it needed to be.  And we did have a beautiful TD to the TE, where everyone went one way, and the TE went to the open side of the field.

I'm hoping the way the QB situation was handled doesn't hurt us over these last 2 games.  But in hindsight, this may have not been the best outcome.

First, I'll repeat that I don't know what I would have done.  But, I thought the coaches were going to go back to Tommy.  By not doing that, he's probably now somewhat "tuned out" for the remainder of the season.  And who knows how Kato might be affected by taking some physical punishment last night, and not executing the passing game.  It seems that giving Tommy a good game of work last night, and knowing that we now have a confident, capable and experienced backup ready at any time, would have been the better outcome.

I disagree.  In hindsight, since Kato had a lackluster performance last night it may seem like playing Thomas was a better decision but if #1 had played lights out, this thought would not even enter your mind.

Bottom line, Terry made the right decision.  Thomas let the team down.  Thomas let himself down.  It is unfortunate he made some bad decisions but there is much more upside for the Zips going forward playing Kato.

From my view it looked like a lower right leg injury.  Scared the crap out of me because half the team huddled around him when he was down on the field and most of them took a knee.  It was nice to see him back on the field for the next couple possessions.  The kid may be one of our next draft picks, we need him.

First off...We goin to the 'ship!! Always good to beat Can't.

My thoughts regarding the game:

Going with Kato was the right move, but anyone who questioned why the staff went with TW all year should have gotten their answer last night, as its clear that Kato has the potential to be better than Woody ever was, but is nowhere near as consistent. I would give Kato the start in the championship game since he got us there and then make a decision based on how he performs there as to who starts the bowl game. Some drops of course didn't help things, but that was not a very good game at all outside of the first drive. He looked worse than he did vs Miami.

Gasser did a great job kicking the ball last night, but he needs to get the ball off quicker. Second blocked punts in as many weeks, and something like that could easily cost us the game vs Toledo/NIU.

Defense played great, IMO. Ulysses may have played the best game I've ever seen a Zip play on D. He looked like the preseason MAC DPOY that he was predicted to be. I also don't know if Kent State's O-line is that bad, but our D-line/Front 7 seemed to get much more pressure than we have all season. Really their only offense was that freshman QB scrambling around.

Kwad needs to at least not get shoved out of bounds running his routes. I counted 3 times.

Horrible call by Haynes to end the half. I wonder who we will be facing next season?

It's 7:56 and......Kent State still sucks!!....and.....we goin' to the 'ship!! See you all in Detroit!

This game is such a buzz kill.

Dear President Wilson:

Please make Keith Kennedy stop!

I enjoyed singing Sweet Caroline. So did everyone around me, so that was cool.  But other than that the 4th-quarter usage of the jumbo tron was, like you said, a COMPLETE buzz kill.
