The Zips travel to Huntington, WV Saturday night to face the 4-3 Thundering Herd.  Last year's game at the JAR was one of the more entertaining games of the year.  Junior 6-3 guard Jon Elmore leads Marshall at 25.3 ppg, with CH Burks (Jr., 6-4, G) at 18.6 ppg and Ajdin Panava (Jr., 6-9, F)at 17.6 ppg.  This game should be a good barometer for the progress of the Zips.

I think this will be a great barometer, as previously stated, for where Akron is as a program early on in this transition. Here are Marshall's schedule & results thus far...

vs. UT Martin: 102-91 (W)       <------------ We beat UT Martin by 17

vs. Southern: 83-74 (W)

@ Morehead St.: 83-86 (L)

@ Illinois: 74-91 (L)

vs. NC Central: 92-84 (W)

@ William & Mary: 104-114 (L)

Very average program it seems. I think we are equal if not ahead of them currently, and I hope the result on Saturday proves that. Additionally, they play UT Chattanooga, Toledo, and OU in the 3 games following their match-up with Akron. Their coach is the older brother of former NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni. Looking at their roster, we match-up well size wise. As @clarkwgriswold mentioned, their top 3 scorers are 6'3", 6'4", and 6'9", all of which we can match at those respective positions defensively. They look to be about 9 or 10 deep, which is about where we're at as well.

I think it's going to be a great game, hopefully capping off a 4-0, 24 hr period for Zips athletics (Men's Soccer vs. Louisville, Football MAC Championship, Women's Basketball vs. #15 Maryland, Men's Basketball vs. Marshall). I hope we learned how to play on the road with our game at Dayton.

Edit: I wonder what sort of recruiting benefits this game will have. The game is in Huntington, the city in which Huntington Prep is located, which Rob Fulford started. Interesting side story/connection.

I really like having Marshall on the schedule every year. There is history between the two programs and D'Antoni has turned them into an average to above C-USA progrum. It's also a manageable roadie for those who like to travel to away games.

I'm hoping our depth issues aren't a problem with the pace

It will be interesting to see if we have enough guys right now who can make shots to play a game that might go into the triple digits.

This might have to be a night where Utomi takes 40 FG attempts.

Big Soccer, football, and basketball games within 24 hour time period.  May be too much for me.

Then come over to Ocacek and smell some chlorine with me....

I have to give a shout out to Coach Kest for managing to get the Terrapins to come to our lovely corner of the women's college basketball world!  Anyone who's NOT on the road or watching the soccer team at the same time (is it the VERY same time?) PLEASE make it out to the JAR Arena to root on our Zips women's team as they take on the most talented team to ever appear in Akron's "gym".  What is the connection between Brenda Frese and Jodi Kest or Akron?  Brenda coached Ball State from 1999-2001, and was an assistant at Kent in her first job in coaching, and where she got her Master in Education.

Second road game for a young team.  Our 3 point shooting has been awful.  Getting open looks and just not hitting.  When Utomi is cold this team is going to suffer.  Maybe the second half will show some improvement.

Team didn't show up for this one.  Seems like Marshall reviewed the tapes and exposed everything.  Poke and his free throws...I don't think I can live through a season of that.  Just infuriates me as a fan...can only imagine how the coaching staff feels.

Actually, Poke made his early free throws.  He also had some nice baskets.  I think he outplayed Sayles.  Sayles looked flat footed all night.  He did not have a very good game.  The Zips looked flat as a team.  They need to box out.  Way too many easy put backs by Marshall.  A young team may have difficulties on the road and it showed tonight.
