"His crying on the court" - tell me one NBA star that doesn't complain to referees

"Chinese affiliation" - this is a slippery slope to go down, many of us are "affiliated" to Chinese products

"Plethora of off days he takes" - he's played 25 of 27 games this year at age 39, averaging 34 MPG

He left Cleveland in a shitty way. He made amends by coming back and winning us a championship.

Again, for most it's politics or race and those other things are just excuses.

As for the school, they offer counseling, health checkups, food pantries, clothing, tutoring, and even housing. They also help parents who didn't graduate earn a GED.

It's true they've had turnover, which is true of most schools who serve inner-city, at-risk kids. It's an absolutely grueling job with a salary scale that doesn't meet its requirements. Teacher burnout is very real, especially post-Covid.

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2023/05/ohios-teacher-shortage-as-schools-look-at-vacancies-teachers-fill-in-the-gaps.html

I'm not sure if the school will be a long-term success or not, but the motivation behind it - to lift up the most at-risk kids in the city - is a noble one.

Excuses? Different traits, affiliations, qualities, etc., are important to different people. His appeal to the masses has been on a downward trend for over a decade.

All you cited are excuses for the school's failure, despite the billionaire athlete having unlimited resources to fix the issue. Again, the school is ignoring the actual problems of the community and giving a handout, rather than truly fixing the issues.

Teacher burnout/shortages/etc.? Go find the best teachers in the country, offer them a contract with a moving and benefits package, and increased pay to teach at the school for X amount of year.

Is this a problem because it's affiliated with the public school system? Go fully private, take the taxpayer money out of it, and he should find it himself.

You can say the goal is a noble one all you want. Talk is cheap, and quite frankly, the billionaire athlete that has been accused of being cheap before (i.e. doesn't tip - ask Ken Stewart's), again went the cheap route to mooch off the taxpayers. This school is simply a failing public school with lower standards, handouts, and LeBum's name associated with it.

I respect the wrap around services you mentioned, although I'm skeptical of the execution of said services.

My problem is not with the idea of the school and building up those kids and that community. My problem is with the half-assed execution and taxpayers getting duped into funding it.

My lack of respect for LeBum doesn't cloud my ability to judge the I Promise School. My wife is a social worker, and a damn good one. That community needs way more than what the I Promise School delivers.

KD talks about Dru at the beginning of this post game from November.  It’s cut off but he mentions him as the coach in waiting. At 5:40 a reporter asks about that.  Certainly sounds like Dru is next in line at Duquesne.

Kind of bold bringing what's actually been said to the table!  It's remarkable how my simple observation at the game turned into a two page debate over the merits of Lebron James.

I will never, ever criticize a person or group trying to improve their community.  Certainly, the I Promise can improve its effectiveness.  The same can be said for the public school system as a whole.  The LeBron James Family Foundation has worked to do that and invested heavily in doing so, but anyone who's ever worked with at-risk students knows it's not typically a quick-turnaround.  Most students entering the school were two or three grade levels behind their peers. Most live in poverty. Many have experienced trauma. And his foundation is working to break the generational cycle those communities experience.

"But I heard he doesn't tip well!"

If you're always looking for the negative in things, you're likely to find it.

For anyone interested, here's a good article on what the school offers and what's planned in the future.  It's really cool to see what they're trying to do.

Now, back to the KD thread. 😉

Good read, and this stuff is great in theory. We'll see if the execution is there. Lots wrong in that community and I don't have a whole lot of faith in LeBum to be genuine with selfless intentions.

For a job or cup of coffee at the students center?  They are currently in last place in their conference and have not won a conference game yet. They have something like 9 wins against cupcakes. Duquesne didn't build a new area for disastrous results. It would be shocking if Duquesne didn't clean house at the end of the year. They aren't going to turn over the program to a guy with three years as an assistant at Cleveland State and one in a train wreck of a season at their school.

Duquesne is currently 10th in scoring and 9th in average points surrendered in the A10.   Dae Dae Grant and Jimmy Clark are both in the top 10 in scoring in the league (3rd and 9th).  Their best rebounder (Drame) is 21st in the conference and are 9th in team rebounding.  That all adds up to 0-5 in the conference.

Grant has been out with a concussion for almost 2 weeks.

Being realistic…if he’d been healthy they might still be 0-5.

When they played at SVSM, I got the sense from watching them that they had some talent but that the talent and  personalities weren't meshing well.

Maybe we should move that idea to the JAR attendance thread!

I think the beers are $8 and $9 dollars at the JAR - major league prices.

Would love to see some creative promotions.  This team deserves for UA Athletics to figure out how to get people in the door.

The last straw, the one that could break the camel's back, may be happening right now as the Dukes are struggling at home against Chicago State.

I could not figure out why they would be playing Chicago State in the middle of the season.  Chicago State is between leagues this year.  I think we have played them in the past.  The Dukes pulled it out.

Well Chicago State is without a league so they have to find opponents for January and February. I'm guessing Duquesne thought this could be a game they could regroup and clear the bench mid conference play.
