Unfortunately the University can't auction off Infocision and its burden. Also unfortunately, numerous UofA administrations have 'kicked this same can down the road' for years and years and years. The pandemic simply forced this administration to finally have to make decisions that should have been made decades ago. Proenza knew the situation of the Athletic Department in particular and the the University in general when he was in charge. Subsequent administrations have passed it on...until now. Should athletics be more drastically downsized? Should football be played at a lower level if at all? Your response depends on your personal opinion toward athletics at this level. Personally, I hope football doesn't completely go away. But at whatever level Akron plays football I will watch. But, its obvious that its time to pick up this can and finally throw it in the trash.
Spin
So let’s say we cut football, or drop it into Tiffin’s league. We lose the ESPNU Tuesday night payday. We lose the annual 7 digit away games against P5. We lose attendance (if that’s even possible). We eventually cut scholarships which actually cost what? I’m assuming the radio coverage is zero cost/income. We still have the Dialer. Which from everything I have heard cost less than renovating/reconstructing the Rubber Bowl. And basketball and soccer become independent or also drop. More programs are cut, since FBS football covers itself and a big chunk of the rest of the athletic department budget. I’m not saying the University won’t drop football. I don’t have a lot of faith in “management” making any competent decisions. I just don’t see the huge cost savings that a few keep preaching about...
Spin
OTOH all the Zips “fans” who want to see the football program killed, despite the consequences, will probably get their wish. LZIp
Not that I have a real opinion of Miller yet, but I'd like to know what went wrong with Matthew Wilson. He seemed to turn the tide after the Scarborough disaster by patching some financial holes at least temporarily and brought people together. My guess is the board or the faculty was the issue. You aren't going to save football by cutting 20 or so scholarships, and I can't imagine the number of ways schools would invent to circumvent a coaching salary cap. He's wrong about the number is scholarships. 60 is not competitive with FCS numbers. $800,000 is not enough for a coaching staff or even close to market value. The big mistake is the MAC, by itself, needs to make changes. That would be an even worse decision than their ESPN weeknight package. All of the G5 schools need to get together and make the hard decisions.

A big part of the problem in the athletics budget is due to accounting methods. In athletics every single cost can be nailed down and charged to that department. That goes all the way down to the people who clean the bathrooms at the JAR and those who mow the grass at Lee Jackson field. Compare that to the English department. If a new building is constructed to house the department do you think the cost of that building is considered a cost of the English program? How about the janitors or grounds keepers? Pretty sure Athletics doesn't get a credit for all the tuition paid from walkons or players from non-scholarship sports.

Spin
How many full scholys would the MAC teams need to cut to make the sport affordable? All college athletic programs (with precious few exceptions) cost the universities. As do all the other services and activities on campus. Students get scholarships all the time for reasons unrelated to anything related to their program (or for learning, period). I got a bunch. So I don’t think it should go non-scholarship or club. I just wonder what everyone else feels is acceptable.

clarkwgriswold
Well....a poll of the Akron chapter of the American Association of University Professors found that they believe the university has not been transparent about its finances and that the administration should make cuts to athletics and administrative salaries before cuts to academics. Shocker. https://www.cleveland.com/education/2020/08/university-of-akron-faculty-union-survey-shows-concerns-about-financial-transparency-decision-making.html In similar news, a survey of Catholic priests determined that they were anti-abortion while a survey of bears found that the actually do $h!+ in the woods.
