Only started 2 games this season. Was he injured?

Yes, injured and has been out since week 3. From what I’ve gathered, he was replaced by a freshman who has played well.

Not a portal offer, but first significant MAC portal departure. CMU’s Bert Emanuel announced he’s hitting the portal.

will be interesting to see how many CMU guys enter the portal with the coaching change.

Offer to OT DJ Johnson of Western Kentucky. Only played in 2 games this year, but was a JUCO standout previously.

Question: if guys aren’t even technically in the portal yet (until Dec 9) how are they receiving offers? Amd how are schools giving offers?

Players are entering the portal now, despite it not being officially open. Once their name is in the database, schools can reach out.
Some schools blatantly ignore the rules and reach out to kids anyway. Other schools may have contact with a relative or former coach of the player to gage interest.

Based on their Twitter accounts it looks like none of the bigger three portal guys (James, Kellen, and Nunally) have received any offers yet. It’s still early, but technically these guys could still come back to Akron if they don’t get the offers they are looking for.

How often has this ever happened?  I would think if it did happen a lot of the guys and coaches maybe(???) would think bad of them for wanting to leave and possibly make it tougher on them.  Just a thought, maybe its too old school to think that way?

It happened with Ali Ali here and Peyton Sparks at Ball St off the top of my head. OU had a bball player come back from Xavier as well a few years ago. Only going to become and more common.

I wouldn’t say it’s common but it’s not totally uncommon either. I think it obviously depends on the player. If it’s someone leaving that they don’t really care if they lose then they would not save that scholarship for them. If it’s someone they really want and do not want to lose then I’m sure they would welcome them back. Having said that, once they enter the portal, they are surrendering that scholarship.

I would take James and Nunally back, knowing full well that if James has a good year he would probably go in he portal again. Kellen seems to be a great kid, but he is a limited RB. He has no breakaway speed, he is not quick and can not make people miss in the open field. We have more talent waiting behind him who have a higher upside. Let them play. Charles Kellen has been a good team member, but since he wants out and he has limited future here I'd tell him to go somewhere that he will get on the field regularly and be a featured back. Probably DII.

So the linemen we offer from other G5's probably were either 1) not getting the playing time they wanted at their current school, or 2) are looking to get paid at a bigger school, right? So that means either 1) these guys are bench players, or 2) we don't have much of a shot at them because we don't have any NIL money to offer.  Does that scenario sound about right?

It’s my hope that Anderson is a mature OL who’s outgrown FCS competition, and wants to challenge himself.

He’s not going to be on any P5 programs radar. No one from a program that finished 4th in the SWAC East is.

Give me a grad student with 2 years eligibility like Anderson from the portal every time. Great fit for a MAC program like Akron.

Could have said the same about AJ Oulette, a walk-on at OU who was toughness personified. Now a very successful running back in the CFL.  In the MAC, toughness often trumps breakaway speed.
