NIU to the Mountain West? Do they have an airline as a sponsor? Those 2700km five hour flights what for 100+ pax and all the equipment aren’t cheap.

Athletic directors don't care. It's not their money.

With the other sports move to something like the Horizon League, their net travel probably decreases by a fair margin even though football jumps.

I kinda hope so, but doubt it...who exactly would want Akron right now?

Not sure the Atlantic 10 would want us, but that’s a pretty fun basketball conference. They also get paid more from their media deal per school than we do, despite not having football. We’d likely have to go to the Horizon or something for FCS football in that case, though. Not sure people are clamoring for that, but it’s not like we’ve been doing well in FBS.

They won't be the last one to leave.

ou usually have more insight than the rest of the board. Can you discuss who may be the next departures?

I believe Toledo had an offer to join as well football only. Don’t know if it still stands or not though.

The extra money they get will more than make up the difference in travel costs. The other sports will most likely end up in the Horizon.

Oh, magic 8-Ball.  Will we be next? 🤔🫣

Go where?

IMHO here are the options at the moment:

-Back to the OVC. They would take us back in a second.

-Big East. Soccer is already there, but would have to beg to get in.

Both these scenarios involves Football going back to Independence.....

I find it interesting that I this entire discussion and the press releases there is not a single discussion of how this move impacts the players students alumni fans and general community around the schools.

Fans and alumni I've seen various places on the internet seem thrilled. This isn't a situation like UMass where the basketball fans are pissed because they got demoted that way football could be given a lifeline. Football is the only sport that matters to NIU. They will likely take their other sports to the Horizon, which will be even less travel for them compared to what they were doing in the MAC before.

All of this is probably why NIU jumped at the invitation while Toledo has appeared to ignore it. Toledo cares about sports like basketball. Also, Toledo is centrally located in the MAC and has natural rivalries they don't want to lose.

Edit: As someone who is more invested in MAC hoops, I'm thrilled by this move. Addition by subtraction.

People always live new things. Wait until reality sets in. Remind me of an old saying. Show me a hot girl and I'll show you guys who got sick of blanking her.

Maybe in 5 or 10 years that piece you're hoping for will be written. Right now everyone seems on board with the move.

To me NIU kind of always was like that relative that never quite fit in with the family. I'm not bothered by their loss like I would be a Toledo, Ohio, Miami etc.

Seriously, who is everyone?  A few posters on the internet?

The MWC lost Colorado State, Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State. As far as I can see, they replaced them with Grand Canyon, UTEP and NIU. It's a terrible conference. The MWC can have them. They can add 10 more nobodies and it won't make up for the losses of the four above.

I've never by big fan of the MAC expanding outside of Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. As soon as possible, I'd like to see Buffalo and UMass hit the bricks. We could have a nine game conference scheduled with 3ooc games. College football is marketing to drunks and degenerate gamblers. We can do that with a ten team MAC.  We can whore ourselves out for MACtion with 10 teams just as much as with 13.

I mean if you really want it to 12, and in that geographic frame, you could try to obtain three of the FCS teams that fit (Youngstown State, Indiana State, Dayton, Valpo)...really not sure what interest they'd have given the $5M buy to FBS and how little more the MAC actually provides anyone.

What NIU fans have you seen that are saddened or upset for leaving the MAC? I haven't seen that sentiment anywhere whether that be their forum, reddit, X, journalism. They seem to all be happy with the move.

I don't really care to get into the discussion of whether or not it's the best move for them because frankly I don't care. I'm simply stating there aren't these saddened NIU fans, alumni, players that you claim there to be. This isn't a situation where Texas and Oklahoma left the Big 12 or USC and Oregon left the PAC-12. NIU fans are on board with this change.

Edit: The only people that I've seen upset about it are fans of other MAC fan bases. People like you.

I'm not saying they are sad or happy. You sad they are happy.

Maybe we should just get it to 10.

You asked where the articles are about the impact this has on the alumni, players, fans. I'm simply stating all are okay with these changes so why would those articles exist?

I'm actually happy they're gone. I'm a bigger MAC basketball fan than MAC football. This is addition by subtraction.

I agree with you 100% there as a bigger MAC basketball fan than football. The only real bummer to this loss is that their football team got the highest TV ratings in the MAC (I believe). Probably doesn’t put us in a great negotiating position when we try to get our peanuts from ESPN next time.

The MWC kinda sucks imo

Yes. In fact, to the average college football fan, all of these FBS conferences that aren’t part of the P4 CFP conversation suck. It will be super league and everyone else (FBS and FCS won’t matter, independent, scholarship, non scholarship blah blah blah). Do you think anyone who doesn’t root for a MAC team is looking at the collective MAC performance in bowl games (was it 5-1?) and thinking to themselves that they underestimated the MAC and will now make a note to tune into those mid-week games next year. I’m with @kreed5120 it doesn’t matter who comes and goes in the MAC for football, but can we boost the MAC basketball conference ranking so we aren’t just getting the single bid to the NCAA each yr based on tournament champion - at least be good enough to get an at large to the NIT with the auto bid gone. Does the MAC have an actual strategy?
