2023 Season

These predictions just show me they aren't doing their homework. Perhaps that should be expected for G5 programs that the national public does not care about. But some predictions scream of laziness. Having won 2 games we can expect that.

Because these preseason predictions were sooo much more thoroughly researched back in the days when we won 5, 6, or 7 games?

I'll provide an inside scoop...take it to the bank...next year, they'll be just as poorly researched.💰

I just seen we are 10.5 dogs to Temple.

That's an enticing line. They had a large transfer class with 11 incoming, which would be my main hesitation, but their offense last year was anemic. Doubtful we get blown out.

I will have some serious concerns if we are blown out by Temple.

Good point but this is a team that finished the season scoring 35 points against a good Houston team and 42 against a good ECU team. Vegas doesn't set the lines for nothing. A lousy Temple team beat us 44-22 in 2021.  Kurt Warner's kid is pretty good.  10.5 points is about right:

when will the roster but updated anybody knows

Akron Athletics have not done a good job updating the football roster and player bio's the last few seasons.  I don't think they have done a team photo either.

When you are a MAC school you have to do the easy things to promote your players and team.

Heard at the Spring Game that the Zips don't have a parents club for football.  If true, someone has to step it up in Athletics.  Got to do everything big and small things to attempt to keep these guys out of the portal.

Forget the players for a second...Akron has Joe Moorhead as it's HC, yet it puts forth a media marketing effort like it has Tom Arth. Invest in Joe...give him whatever he needs...and InfoCision will fill up and pay the bills. Keep trying to get by on the cheap, with broken scoreboards and essentially zero media promotion...and see what happens. As long as "bush league" is our bar, we'll always be bush league.

It’s really unacceptable to not have the roster and bios updated. It really doesn’t take that much effort and once it’s on there its good for a year. If you half ass things like that it makes you look like a half assed program. You have to promote your own program, but the lack of media attention is alarming. Is it the chicken or the egg?

What is the parents club?

KJ sounds like a coach in the making. Outside of that, not much here that we didn’t already know or suspect. Regardless, it’s nice to get something from the social media department outside of pictures.

I posted a table in the "Where is all the recruiting money coming from?" thread to suggest that, compared to other MAC programs, the Zips have scrimped on staff to be able to help fund an obviously larger recruiting budget.*

The same table might also at least partially explain the lack of info posting by the team that some of you are complaining about. IMHO, this staff is really thin. We could use, at a minimum, a graduate assistant or two with excellent computer skills.

* The good news is at least the coaches realize we need better players to improve. If left to there own devices, academic types would increase the football staff with a variety of vice presidents each in charge of a different really important thing like concession stand signage or ticket taker uniforms.

If you’re itching for more MAC talk, take a listen. It’s not necessarily a great listen, but it’s decent.

A lot of love for Toledo and NIU. They also like Ohio and EMU. A few of the guys picked Akron as their dark horse to win 6 games and make a bowl.

My thoughts on Toledo and NIU:

- Seems almost everyone thinks Toledo is the best bet for a P5 upset over Illinois. I disagree. Feels like so many forget about Toledo losing to Bowling Green and Western Michigan to close out the regular season. They won the MACC against an Ohio team missing the MAC POY and then squeaked out a bowl win. I do think Toledo will have a great season, but I keep hearing that since Illinois lost so much in the secondary, they won’t be as good. Back track a year and hardly anyone was talking about the Illinois secondary before the season started. Just to give an example how situations can get spun to fit a narrative.

- Outside of the OL and RB, NIU will struggle with depth on offense. The defense majorly struggles on the backend and have not seemingly shored it up in the offseason. LB play should be better, but it was rough last year, so that isn’t saying much. The Zip OL had their way with NIU’s DL last season, especially in the second half. Banking on Lombardi being healthy for a successful season kinda shows where NIU is as a program and what is likely coming in 2024.

2023 MAC Predictions:

EAST

OHIO = 8-4 (7-1)

AKRON = 8-4 (6-2)

MIAMI = 8-4 (6-2)

BUFFALO = 7-5 (4-4)

BOWLING GREEN = 2-10 (1-7)

KENT STATE = 1-11 (0-8)

WEST

TOLEDO = 9-3 (6-2)

EMU = 7-5 (4-4)

NIU = 6-6 (4-4)

BSU = 5-7 (4-4)

CMU = 5-7 (4-4)

WMU = 3-7 (2-6)

I’ll probably be way off on some of these, but just going through the schedules these are the results I finished with. What does everyone else think?
