2025 Portal Departures

There is something going on within the program. Simmons departure makes no sense. Was he suggested to leave so a complete rebuild could occur? I don't think so, but nothing makes sense. Most of our players who have left will not find NIL money. Do they want to play for a winner? Maybe, but at UA they had their spots won and the program was heading upward. If they had really bought in as Joe has said repeatedly not this many would be leaving. They could have been comfortable, but they chose to leave for the chaos of the TP. Why? There has to be more here than we are aware.

The players have all bought into the delusion that they will end up with a lucrative NIL deal or perhaps a chance at making a splash at a P4 program. We are living in an instant gratification, YOLO era.

Except for perhaps the NCAA Top 10-to-15, who in their right mind could survive the workload of being a head college football coach if this trend continues?

You have to re-recruit your entire team every year?

re-recruit your current players...

recruit high schoolers...

recruit the Transfer Portal...

retain your staff...

find replacements for departed staff...

Not only is rebuilding a program now virtually impossible but the job responsibilities of the head coach have become, IMHO, literally overwhelming.

The "system" has drained whatever interest I've had for NCAA football completely from me.  I'm hanging on by a thread to NCAA DI basketball, men's and women's.  Two threads for college soccer.  @Blue & Gold is right, how do you do your job as a head coach - why do you want to do the job of a head coach - even at a MAC level school?    I've always poo-pooed the comments made here regarding dropping football, dropping back to lower level football, etc.  But maybe there's a point where you say, "why not?"  Especially while we are in the "budget crisis" we've been in since God knows how long?  Maybe there's a point where you just say "Enough!", tell the MAC see you later, and explore dropping down?  It's not like it's going to hurt attendance at games, maybe season tickets and sponsors money, and seat holders that want to say they belong to a DI program.  Maybe the Good Ol' Days of seeing your team in a FCS or DII, DIII Championship race would bring in at least the same number of fans and make it fun again.   This post-season of NIL and Transfer portal news is simply insane and unsustainable.  When it all collapses, and it will, where will the Zips stand?  Just like @Blue & Gold, this is just my humble opinion....

Having a team that has a chance to win SOMETHING will probably result in more fans.

Adding that all of their games would be on Saturdays, instead of this late season Tuesday/Wednesday garbage...yeah, attendance would rise in this instance.  Would it make up for the loss of body bag game money?  Probably a reason why they're not making this move just yet...

Golden Nelson to West Virginia. So just off the top of my head we’ve lost players several P5 programs: West Virginia, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Ole Miss . This begs the question did this team underperform based on the talent that was on the field? Is this a bad look for Joe?

I am tuned out of the playoffs specifically, and uninterested in this so-called college football generally. The sport has always been equal measures of corruption (academic fraud, etc.) and the “haves vs. the have-nots". Today it's markedly worse. Rich universities like Ohio State can now buy championships outright while 75% of D1 teams get poached in the portal, having to rebuild every year.  I don't see how this can continue. I am a UA fan to the end, but what kind of sports world are we living in now, specifically in the G5? It seems like a hopeless task no matter who the coach is.  If you're on the bottom in this circumstance it's far too likely that the bottom is where you remain without NIL money, which UA and the rest of the MAC does not have. It's now one year and out for 20-40% of your "varsity".  How could any coach build a team like this?  No time to develop, no time to build.  It's just bailing out water from a sinking ship or putting on a new roof and then you find out your foundation just collapsed.

Having enjoyed watching his outstanding skills I would have thought he would receive P4 offers higher up the food chain. Memphis is the only offer that is respectable and they aren't P4.

Do you know if these schools are offering $$?  Maybe there's a chance he'll return?

I’m sure South Florida, Memphis, and East Carolina are offering $. They supposedly have three of the bigger NIL presences in their conference.

Unfortunately for us, AD has signed with an agent. So little to no chance of him returning.

I don't want him back. He completely checked out of the Toledo game, and we won without him. I trust we will get a winner or two out of the portal. Brookhart knows WR talent.

How much are they going to pay a kid like Norton? 10k? 5k? Is that worth uprooting yourself, making your family fly across the country or drive 10 hours every weekend to see you play Florida Atlantic or UAB? Are they transferring just for the prestige of getting paid something?

I wonder how many portal kids are happy after their transfer, versus those who are delusional, and regret not "dancing with the girl that brung them"? I'll bet it's well over 50% at the G5 level.

In the end you've been to 4 different schools, made no lifelong friends...just been a football mercenary, have no real university to call your own...got $12,230 total dollars in NIL money after taxes...and after their eligibility has expired still need another 21 credits to get a general studies degree.

Steve Spurrier used to say - "The hardest thing about recruiting is convincing a kid that has no business going to college to come to yours." Now you just need to wave a couple bucks at them and they're yours.

This is a hall of fame level post. It totally lays out the ridiculous delusion of NIL and TP for 90% of student athletes.

$10k+ to a college-age young adult (whatever that means) is a solid chunk of change. Imagine having room & board paid for along with most meals, workouts, equipment, education, etc., and getting $10k+ on top of that. A decent number of these athletes come from very little and their legal prospects for making money - at least early on - depend solely on football. Whether or not it's worth leaving your current situation for or how the money is spent in the long run isn't ours to judge. The only thing that matters is the individuals making the decisions aren't lied to, scammed, or taken advantage of. The funny part is as they're chasing the money, the taxes they pay go towards the coaches' 6 or 7 figure salaries (such a joke).

The NCAA could have prevented this years ago by simply allowing college athletes to make money on their own. The uproar and Wild West was ushered in by the boards of college athletes turning to their left and right only to see their non student athlete counterparts making money via streaming, social media, or even regular jobs. The suits and donors at these bigger universities do what all crooked elites do and didn't let a good tragedy go to waste. They took advantage of the situation and pushed pay to play, which is why we're here now and what the real problem is.

Pul-leaze! However correct you are you run the grave risk of having this go to the Capt's head. Very risky!

Coaches are running a 120+ person organization. To get paid 6 or 7 figures to do this is fair compensation.

I think some would be surprised by what some of these players are making in NIL. Someone posted an anonymous MAC basketball coaches survey. MAC coaches were saying departing players were making anywhere between $25k to $200k+. Granted that was basketball and this is football so not a perfect apples to apples comparison.
