ZipForNow
I saw Tavari on campus earlier this week and spoke with him. He spoke as if he is returning and looking forward to it. This was before Nate entered the portal.

1981 grad
With Nate I guess "show me the money" beat out "teamism" It is obvious that Okonkwo decided to leave because he had another offer. Like Okowkwo, I thought we would see Nate landing immediately. Now I wonder whether he decided to test the market. If he does not have a landing spot, coaches will see the same thing that was pointed out by another poster, he has struggled against good teams. Ali Ali also struggled against elite competition before he transferred and never made it at the next level. Even though he left Akron, I would like to see Nate be successful but he will need to work hard to be successful at the next level. His three point shooting will need to improve and he must eliminate those crazy passes that we have seen from him the last 3 years. His defense is good but he will be playing against quicker players almost every day. The "Where are they now" thread looks like it will be busy next year.
ZipForNow
Are we at the point where it becomes fairly standard for (certain) players to declare for the draft with the option to return AND enter the portal with the option to return? That may be what is happening with Nate Johnson. It is a much more parallel situation now. If you saw the possibliity to make, say, 10 times the NIL money for 1 or 2 years, and just wish to see whether that is realistic, wouldn't you want to test the market? That said, I do think there is an important disanalogy with declaring for the draft. There you are talking about skills evaluation. Enrique came back after declaring and realized that he had to become more of a stretch 4 so he worked on his 3-point shooting in his final year at Akron. And it did pay off for him. kreed5120
When you have 'teamism' and make a commitment to stay there is probably a lot of pressure to not be the one to let your friends down. Once someone else breaks it, it likely becomes easier for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc guy to follow suit.

I’m now leaning towards an intentional roster rebuild taking place. The verdict will be in the end result. If we end up with an improved roster fairly soon, then it’s orchestrated. If not, we got poached and teamism fell apart. Either way, it’s hard seeing guys you have rooted for leave before getting a Senior Day. zippy5
I'm not sure our intentional rebuild would start with shuttling Nate and Tavari out and keeping the others

If anything was orchestrated it would have been the players holding their own meeting and deciding collectively that they were going to get a bag instead of running it back. No way Bud and Groce pushed out 2 1st Team All-MAC players. Whoever we bring in to replace them likely won't be as good. Replacing Gray’s size on the perimeter and improving the play at the center spot were. But maybe the staff is on a roll and they were presented with opportunities that are too good to pass up. Or maybe I’m all wet. Just floating a balloon here.

If it was just 1 of them leaving because Akron felt they couldn't afford both, especially given our depth at guard, that would be 1 thing. Losing both is extremely devastating. I'm not even going to bother commenting on the state of the roster until the portal closes. This could get ugly fast if others join. We would have been better off had we known of these departures in March. Into mid-April we likely missed out on guys we would have otherwise targeted. Others are likely close to deals with teams they've built relationships over the past several weeks.
Illini Zip
If Young hits the portal I will be in the fetal position. No doubt. But Groce and Wentz could have been working the phones themselves behind the scenes for weeks. We are all completely in the dark here as to their agenda going into the off-season.
