We have plenty of scoring, we need our bigs to get rebounds, play defense, and block some shots. From all reports they liked him at Duquesne but he had a heart condition which ended his freshman year early. He would have stayed if it were not for the Dukes bringing in a big man. James was not some offensive mastermind, in fact he was certainly a negative in most games on that end. I distinctly remember 3 missed layups in the first half of the Arizona game. He was great in other places, but offense was not quite his thing. I have no reason to not trust this staff in their development of this kid. Go Zips Heart condition? That’s scary. Quote

The scarier part is they weren't able to determine the root cause therefore he hasn't had any corrective or preventative treatment. He plays with a heart rate monitor to measure for any abnormalities. If he has another flair up, he's likely done for the year, perhaps career. Unless Groce thinks Brisco could give Akron 15-20 minutes as a contingency plan, I'm not sure how we could risk that. Edited April 23 by kreed5120 1 Quote

There's certainly risk, but I'm not sure it's any different from a team perspective than a player getting a season-ending injury, like Harris last season. He wears a monitor, gets regular check-ups, and doctors have told him there's low risk in it happening again. 1 Quote

I knew of at least two guys in my hometown that passed away on the court during games. A silver lining is that it raised awareness and thankfully defibrillators are practically everywhere now. I remember when it happened to Bronny James, there was a article I was reading that said that basketball players are the most prone to having heart issues. Due to their height and the sudden bursts/energy used when playing the sport. Quote
zipsrowdy88 Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 I will just let JG worry about the injury risk. I assume he’s been cleared and the risk is not insane or he wouldn’t be allowed to play. Quote

clarkwgriswold Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 (edited) Head was on a A-SUN All-freshman team before transferring to Arkansas State. Nice left-handed shot. Played at a solid program in high school, Lutheran East. I'm a little surprised with a 6'3" guard. Edited April 24 by clarkwgriswold 1 Quote

LZIp Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 (edited) He's realistically probably our 4th or 5th guard. Probably a cheap (free?) pickup who has shown to have potential. I see it as more of a lottery ticket this year/hedge against losing Scott, Hardman, and Johnson to graduation next year to reduce roster turnover. Now just get a promising big. I think depth and Shammah Scott’s replacement are good points, but here is a guy who can drive confidently to the hoop on the left side of the court. Actually, he appears to be amber dexterous. I think if Groce could fill half his roster with left-handers, he would. It makes the offense more dynamic and is another wrinkle the opponents have to game plan around. Edit: He is from Cleveland, so there’s that. But watching his highlights more closely he seems to shoot with his left and drive mostly with his right. So we’ll see how that plays out. ZipsFan31 Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 (edited) This is the “Nate” replacement. We still have a spot for the okonkwo replacement. is he as good as Nate… no. But this guy could help if the freshman are not all that. I actually have hope redshirt freshman Eric Mahaffey could be the Nate replacement. It might not be Johnson and Johnson. 2026 might be the mahaffey brother year! Edited April 24 by ZipsFan31 1 Quote

We're not as deep as guard so I'd expect each to see closer to 30 minutes and we try to replace Nate in the aggregate. Eric and this guy will help fill the void along with filling the minutes vacated by Hardman. Quote

Let'sGoZips94 Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 Nate wasn't directly replaced, but he was recreated in the aggregate. Hopefully we get Chabi (or someone like him) to officially commit soon, then we're ready to rock and roll. This team will be LETHAL. Quote
roopride Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 Two years eligibility, right. We were heavy in seniors. Quote
