I think it's more to do with cost. Although, a lower production level for YouTube would minimize cost. I just know there's significant cost associated with producing a broadcast at the level required for ESPN+. That's why the non D1 games are only broadcast on GoZips.com. Less cost for the lower production quality.

After "watching" the last soccer game at Cleveland State on ESPN+, pretty sure different schools have different levels of required quality for ESPN+

I am headed to the game tonight, excited to see the new guys. I am looking to see if the combo of Burton and Barre can Hold he fort down and be productive. we don't need them to average 15 points a game but we do need Rebounding and Rim protection.

Yeah, that wasn't good. I should say there are "supposed" to be standards for a ESPN+ broadcast. 😅

I think rebounding and rim protection might be the only thing we get from them. I don't expect much offense from either.

Is Burton healthy? He was in a boot at the golf outing a month ago. If he is, I would be willing to bet we see him stretch the floor a bit and take some 3's. He was a shooter in high school and WMU never really used him away from the post.

Barre is very athletic; here's to hoping Ford being the big man developer and now HC gives him a few more opportunities to prove his worth, especially on offense.

I think we're going to see a wide open system on offense with a lot of dribble drives, cutting, kick-outs, etc. There is so much athleticism and versatility on this team, the potential is sky high.

Friendly reminder to not panic if we lose or look messy tonight! Especially with a new coach and core it's much expected. We've looked rough in some of these exhibitions in the past during the Groce era and turned out fine!

Didn't we lose to YSU last year?

Pay a student $40 for the game to operate the camera, tell them to just follow the ball to each side of the court, give them free concessions at the half, and make it happen. I don't need a score bug for an exhibition.

Pay two more students, one with a chalkboard, one with a camera on the chalkboard, and picture-in-picture.  Make it real campy :D

This probably also emphasizes the "don't panic if things look bad today" because that also takes some time to develop.  Feels a D1 team like this is a better exhibition game choice to help develop this stuff, than most of the D3s.

YSU is perfect. It's a notch above NIU (hahaha Toledo) and a step down from playing our rival (looking at you Auburn/Bama).

And if they lose this exhibition, they can still win the MAC

I knew there was no gatekeeper the past few years, but I didn't realize they left the decks completely unattended. There have been times my wife and I had to drive separately to the game, but we only have 1 pass so I'd park at Manny's or somewhere and walk to the JAR while she took the parking pass. I would have thought a parking Nazi would do at least 1 round throughout the game writing people tickets that didn't have passes on their mirror.

parking Nazi 🤣🤣🤣

There are so many new parts and wrinkles it’s hard to pick just one thing that intrigues me most about this new season. But with Barre being hurt so much of last season I am curious what his level of involvement will be this year.

Barre's injuries from last year I don't believe are anything in danger of high risk of re-injury. He has known heart issues that led to him missing time at Duquesne. Not sure if he's on minute restrictions or odds it could become problematic if we find ourselves needing to rely on him for 20 minutes a night.

I'm probably most excited to see the size and versatility of our guards/forwards. We tried to play an aggressive style of defense last year, but the quality teams we faced often were able to move it around to find the open man.

This year we have a lot more size and more versatile players. We should better be able to disrupt passing lanes and while we might take a step back offensively I think we'll be able to force more turnovers on the defensive end to compensate.

Bingo! I greatly prefer this balance of play if it's executed well

I've posted a lot - probably to the point of nausea for some of you haha - about the size increase with this roster, but what you pointed out is the exact reason I've emphasized it in so many posts. 6'5"+ guards/forwards getting a hand up on defense while rotating/closing out is automatically going to be more effective than 5'11"/sub 6'4" guards which is what we had most of the time last season.

I don't know how much of a step back, if any, we'll take on offense. Barring any change in Oriol's eligibility, he and Staveskie combine for ~40ppg based on last year's stats. Hammer, Henderson, Pence, Head, and Mahaffey are all guys I could see averaging ~8-10+ ppg, and guys like MMK, White, Halligan, Burton, Barre, Wilson, and Perkins can throw in 6-8 ppg each on any given night (not mentioning the true freshman because I have zero idea what to expect from them). Even if Staveskie/Oriol take a slight step back to ~30ppg combined due to a change in playing time/system, there's 85-90+ ppg on this team, and probably in a more efficient manner than we've previously seen. Guys' legs should be fresher throughout the game, too, due to our depth.

The biggest questions...

1) How fast can these guys gel?

2) Can we get consistent outside shooting from guys not named Oriol (40% 3P last year) and Staveskie (37.3% 3P last year)?

Tavari was putting up video game like volume + efficiency numbers up until like March. Scott and Hardman were both volume 3 point shooters who shot over 40% from 3. Amani was a real threat from the perimeter and forced opposing centers to defend him 20 feet from basket, which opened up the lane for dribble penetration.

I just don't see this years team having the same scoring efficiency and that's okay. There is more than 1 way to win a basketball game.

If Burton is healed up we may just finally have the elusive "serviceable backup bigs."  @NWAkron will be so excited!
