Just...wow.

Are the championships at Firestone?
-
Based on my own quick research, Akron softball's all-time best MAC record is 23-5 in 1998. Second most is 19 wins in 1997. With 9 MAC games left, 23 wins might be tough, but 19 is certainly in play. Also, not sure if they've ever finished first in the regular season, but they did win the East division in 1998 and 2002. There's no divisions anymore, of course.

They are playing really well, definitely also taking advantage of other teams mistakes.
-
No, not at all. I'm saying what I said, that the Spring game should be made such a good time that it will make you want to buy tickets to come back to see the team and duplicate the fun experience. Looks like they accomplished that in Brimfield.
-
seems like this team will be "a little bit country."

This man attempted more than 10 3 pointers a game two years ago

Gilbert was nothing special when the Zips played Concord.

I haven't seen him play, but by the numbers he looks like a chucker. A career .341 shooter from the field and .329 from 3. I'm not sure if he's an elite perimeter defender and that's the appeal, but his rebounding, blocks, and steal totals leave a lot to be desired. Personally, I hope one of the other MAC teams sign him. I would hope that we could do better. Edit: Evan Miya graded him as the 7th best player on a 12-21 Sun Belt team. The #2302 rated player in college basketball overall.
-
If we land him in addition to Staveskie, we are well and truly back.
-
The Lady Zips have now won 9 in a row and sit in 1st place with a 15-3 record in MAC play.

He appears to have pretty good handles and decent footwork for someone of his size. I could definitely see being able to play both him and Barre at the same time without it being much of an issue. https://x.com/i/status/2043368372922921403 Edit: Last season against us he had 6 points on 2/6 shooting, 4 boards, and 2 blocks. I'm probably most pleased with the rim protection (and obviously 3P%). That was obviously a weakness for us last year. Would prefer if he was a stronger rebounder. Likely needs to put on some muscle to better fight for position.

By God, that's Todd May's music!

In today's NIL/portal world, this will help Kent because you can see that pipeline to "CBB contender money" from Kent State.

Spring 2026 - Games Thread

The officiating was deplorably inconsistent. Just awful. By any standard anywhere. There was something about the artificial turf on the training fields adjacent to Historic Crew Stadium. Although the weather was dry and sunny, players from both teams kept slipping and sliding to ground. This persisted the entire match. The turf itself was dry to the touch. Was everyone wearing the wrong cleats? And no one adjusted? These conditions exacerbated the already overly physical play and reluctant refereeing. Terrible! Hopefully, no lasting injuries were sustained. This competition finale had been hosted in the actual Historic Crew Stadium some five (or more) years running. Rumor is that the new UFL franchise renting the stadium as home did not want the soccer field lines showing concurrently with the football field lines. Imagine that. Never mind that Historic Crew Stadium was the first soccer specific stadium built in the USA. Irony abounds! Consequently, the collegiate Spring League (or whatever) was bumped to the training facility. Restrooms were literally one half mile from the meager seating. It is doubtful any of the schools involved will want anything about this scenario repeated, so the Spring League has likely come to an end. It was fun while it lasted. Standouts for Zips were (unsurprisingly) Matt Dreas, Matthew Paiva and Farrel Ngongang. -
We all rip Sendy for being a clown, which he is, but he seemingly brokered this with his Kelvin Sampson connection. Good on him for taking care of his guys, especially one that gave 4 years to Kent. With that being said, Kent sucks.

Spring 2026 - Games Thread

It was a 1-1 tie while losing in a shootout. The teams were evenly matched. Louisville is vastly improved over last Spring. We used the game to see who fit where. Many freshman got PT. We have a lot of talent not yet on campus and that is great because we have some holes to fill. I thought Rourke, Freddy K. and Dreas played very well. Jared used this to clearly evaluate what we have and where he needs to mine the portal. Expect a completely different team than this Spring to Open up next Fall against Dayton. -
Good move for him. He will make a lot of money with the opportunity to get PT and play for a national contender.

Class of 2026 Offers and Commits
Illini Zip replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
After having guards named Sharron and Shammah on the court together which scrambled my simple, little brain…we will now have a Tai’Ree and a Tahj. 🤦♂️ -
First of all, the Tahj addition fits the system already in place. Time will tell, but this leads me to think Ford isn’t looking to make drastic offensive changes. I agree with this statement. I thought with the loss TJ to graduation bringing in senior leadership at PG was going to be necessary. And with Young in the portal, he is a good insurance policy, but won’t necessarily step on Young’s toes if he decides to stay. They are complimentary pieces. Just like TJ, Young and Scott were this year. He could very well be PG1. Hopefully there’s a vigorous battle this offseason with Young. But again, they likely share the PG responsibilities and play together a bunch. Tai’Ree will be in the PG rotation as well.

Zips add Tahj Staneskie. Zips entering the portal with a possibility of returning; Bowen Hardman, Sharron Young, Eric Mahaffey, Ognjen Stankovic. (Still on the chart in green) Those not likely to return; Connor Groce and Rich Brisco.
