  1. Kwan had a great season. I started this thread because I never thought he would achieve the success that he had and deserved a shout out for how well he was playing every game. He is one of the main reasons we were so successful this season. Unfortunately, his offensive game became more inconsistent about three quarters through the season. In the semifinal he went 3 for 4 from the 3 line and scored 11 points in limited minutes because of foul problems. However, in the final he and Antino had poor shooting nights and there is little chance of us winning when those 2 are not shooting well. However, the talent is there so there is still a chance to reach 1000 points. No matter if we win or lose, would love to see Kwan have a great game tonight. Go Zips!!

  2. Unfortunately, scientific studies have conclusively established that drug dealers and other criminals are generally better basketball players than altar boys and honor roll students.

  3. They took a private charter jet out of Akron/Canton. 15 minute bus ride to the airport from the JAR. Bus pulls up directly to the aircraft, no TSA . 3 hour plane ride. Bus pulls up directly to aircraft in Houston. 15 minute bus ride to the hotel.

  4. Like that we allowed a team like Northwestern buy us instead of a Oklahoma, OSU, or Wisconsin. That 2018 OOC schedule actually scares me. We need to string together winning seasons to build our program. I'm not sure we're ready for this tough of a schedule.

  7. Good post and I agree completely. What I remember most was Nick Harney handling the point during the MAC tourney. A 6'-8" point guard! He had such raw talent. Of course, his off-court issues ultimately overshadowed that. As they did with Diggs, Abreu, & Tree. KD learned his lesson and has since stayed away from such high risk/high reward players. I agree with that strategy. I bet his players graduation rate has been at, or near, the top of the MAC too.

  8. I sure hope the Zips win tonight, so fans have better topics to discuss.

  9. I watched the 1st half of that game before going to bed. Watching that game you could tell CSUB came out treating it like it was the most important game of their season. Cal players were treating it like it was their last class before spring break. It translated into a CSUB 45-19 lead going into halftime. It appears Cal stepped up their play in the 2nd half, but that margin was too much to overcome. Zips need to come out with that same energy. The NIT isn't the NCAAT, but it's still a huge upgrade over the CBI or CIT. Don't take the opportunity for granted.

  10. The last guy (Jimmy Hall) to play against Big Dog is 6'8" 235. Hall had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. I hope the guys you listed are less talented than Jimmy. Big Dog will get his touches tonight, no doubt. Hopefully he converts the majority of his attempts, and the Zips hit their threes when he passes back to the perimeter. Something tells me it will come down to Kwan having a successful game to pull off the upset. Time to walk the walk, get to MSG and prove to everyone this program is serious! We need some "January Kwan" tonight! BTW, with the Cal loss, the Cougars are the highest seeded team left on our quadrant. UH coach Sampson says that 330 pound Isaiah Johnson is a joy to watch.

  11. Figured I'd post some of the attendance figures for the MAC and of its competitors in regards to Championship game attendance. MAC - 10,376 C-USA - 6,176 SunBelt - TBD (Played in 10,000 arena that was not even close to being full) CAA - 6,342 Horizon League - 5,929 WCC - 8,179 B1G - 12,902 MVC - 11,744 The B1G only beat us by ~2,500 fans (can blame Kent for not pulling their weight) and we outperformed our peers besides the MVC who we were a shade behind. Good job Zips Nation.

  13. There's been a lot of discussion centered around the Zips finally breaking through as a program and making an NCAA Tournament run. 2012-2013 might have been that year, if not for some significant off-court issues. On October 2, 2012, Quincy Diggs was suspended for the 2012-2013 season. Diggs was MAC Sixth Man of the Year the previous season and was primed to break out even more. The loss of Diggs hurt significantly, but Akron still rolled through the MAC, achieved a Top 25 ranking, and looked like a team that would make a March run. Then, on March 7th, Alex Abreu was arrested and charged with two third-degree felonies of drug trafficking and drug abuse. Abreu's Zips career was done. Even still, the talented Zips managed to win the MAC Tournament title. Unfortunately, they drew an awful matchup - VCU - and half of the team came down sick the night before the game. Akron was drubbed and the season was over. You can't change the past and actions bring consequences, but I can't help but think of what might have been if Diggs didn't get suspended and Abreu wasn't arrested. F - Treadwell (Jr) / Harney (Jr) F - Gilliam (Sr) / Kretzer (Fr) / McAdams (Fr) C - Marshall (Sr) / Forsythe (Fr) G - Diggs (Sr) / Walsh (Sr) / Ibitayo (So) G - Abreu (Jr) / Betancourt (Fr) That roster is STACKED and would have easily be the most talented roster in program history. As we discuss Keith Dambrot constructing a roster to take this program to the next level, I can't wonder if he already built it once, but lost it due to poor off-court decisions/actions by his players.

  15. You forget the rest of the story: 1) We had just played that VCU team to a 1-point overtime game the year before. 2) Alex was not the only guard we lost for that game. Deji was out with a back injury, and Walsh had food poisoning. Playing VCU with basically 1 Guard, who was a freshman (Carmelo) is a recipe for disaster. I'd love to play that game over again with Abreu, Diggs, Walsh, and Deji.

  26. I love this. NorthWestern is the type of BIG-10 team we need to be playing. Not a perennial powerhouse, but not the bottom either. Hopefully we can catch them in a down year. 2018 OCC: Nebraska Iowa State Northwestern (Probably Random FCS School) That's a good chance to pull of a Big-10 win...playing two in the same year. The problem is that it looks like that would make us have 5 home games, and 7 away games, unless they can negotiate to push back the Iowa State return visit.

  28. Teams are given 4 fouls and on the 5th the opposing teams shoot 2 free throws. At the 9:59 mark team fouls are reset to 0. It should help the Zips considering they had to be among the nation leaders in misses on the front end of 1 and 1.

  30. A 7 seed in the NIT for the regular season champ of the MAC is a strong sign of the respect the college basketball world has for the Tuesday night football playing, poorly officiated, ESPN kowtowing, Mid-American Conference. Rant over.
