  3. Looking forward to the game tonight. I think the key to the game is Daniel Utomi. The last 5 games he has been averaging over 20 points. He has been scoring from the inside and is no longer relying on the 3 point shot. The Zips are feeding the ball to him with his back to the basket and he is distributing or driving to the hoop. Would love to see Duvivier get hot from the 3 line or drive to the basket. Jimond also needs to have a good offensive game. Parish and Cotten have been playing well and if we can get something from Klac and Patton we should win this game. I know that Lucas Smith will give us everything he has on the defensive end. The Zips need to stay out of foul trouble, especially, Duvivier. We need him to end the game. Not sure why he is such a foul magnet. I like the way the Zips competed in the last 5 games even though we 3 losses we were in every game and played tough defense. Go Zips!!

  4. I am more scared of the road game against WMU tonight than any possible match up in Cleveland. Road games and foul trouble go hand in hand. We win tonight, Akron can beat anyone or lose to anyone in the MAC. We are both inconsistent and dangerous. We are quite the wild card. I would say 2 MAC Tourney wins for this Zips roster should be about right. Next year we take the whole thing. Go Zips!!

  5. Former University of Akron football player Zach Guiser (Fayette City, Pa.) has earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the NCAA announced. Each of the 30 Division I fall sports recipients will receive a $7,500 scholarship to be applied toward the graduate degree program of his choice. A semifinalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, Guiser was a team captain last fall. A preseason All-MAC selection by Athlon Sports and College Sports Madness, he was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. Just the second first-team Academic All-American in school history, Guiser suffered a season-ending injury against Iowa State. He finished this fall with 16 tackles, an interception, and a break-up. The Academic All-American was also a three-time MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-MAC selection. Named to the President’s List (8 semesters) for a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA), Guiser earned a bachelor’s degree in December 2017 in pre-physical therapy/sport science. A member of the University’s Honors College, Guiser is pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy from Walsh University. Additionally, Guiser will be honored on Tuesday, March 6, by the Northeast Ohio National Football Foundation with a $2,000 scholarship. The NCAA awards Postgraduate Scholarships to student-athletes who are in their final year of college athletics eligibility. Up to 175 scholarships are awarded each year for use toward an accredited graduate program. Awardees are evaluated on their academic and athletic achievement, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership. The program rewards college athletes whose dedication and effort reflect the characteristics needed to succeed in graduate study. Awardees are chosen by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, which includes faculty athletics representatives, athletics administrators, and a conference commissioner. “These scholarships are one of the ways the NCAA provides a pathway to opportunity for student-athletes,” said Mattie White, chair of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and senior associate athletics director at Indiana. “These scholarships are reserved for student-athletes with distinguished college careers highlighted by outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. These experiences prepare them for success in graduate study and life.” Source: GoZips.com

  7. Generally, I'm in favor of recruiting.

  8. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the relationships the staff has built and how they prioritize. With a limited staff and budget, UA has to make some tough calls as to where they direct their energies in recruiting. I recall, as Hilltopper referenced, that Thomas built his relationships in the Houston area and that paid off. I suspect it will now pay off for Duquesne, not Akron.

  10. "Don't see a future with Cotton here". My god. You guys act like he's been trafficking drugs or chucking plates at his girlfriend. The only negative I've seen from him is that he's an emotional player on the court. Seems like a good kid otherwise. He's got a personality similar to Ivey (who I noticed get physical with the staff this year..and nobody talked about that), and its logical that they clash. He should concede to the leaders of the team and needs to get the emotions under control some, however. The suspensions speak for themselves, but I'm not sure I recall any technical fouls this year. Quit acting like they are playing chess out there. I'll say it again - writing anybody off in their true freshman year is stupid, especially when its the 2nd best player thus far in a big class.

  11. I'm not familiar with Dean Wormer. Is he new with the Wilson administration? Why would a Dean speak to one of the athletes about his attitude? Is he the guy leaving the polymer department?

  12. I see him as a hybrid of e-man and Kosty, with more shooting range. Still something of a project.

  13. Just to be clear, I am not writing anybody off. Just assessing the reality of the depth we'll have next year. I haven't see any more of Riak than some limited online video and him around the team at games, but his stats indicate to me he that he won't be an offensive force. Here's a UA video on Deng-

  14. I've said this before, but I think it bears repeating. There will be a few Zips that will see something rare in a college career next year, getting fewer minutes per game than they saw in the year prior. K-lac and Patton are obvious choices, but as you guys suggest, Virshon will have a little more competition at the point.

  15. Agreed. Next year you'll have Hester and possibly Jackson ahead of him.

  16. I noticed from early on how Jimond took Virshon under his wing and has been mentoring him. I think their on and off-court relationship will be a guide to Cotton's future with the team, and I'm confident V will be a key cog for three more years. However, we get two guards next year who could relegate him to long stretches on the bench! THAT may be an even bigger stress point for him.

  17. Other than Clemson - 2019 and beyond scheduling looks a lot like how I'd draw it up if it were up to me. I'd replace Clemson with a Duke or UNC if we're looking for an ACC roadie in that area. All in all I like

  18. 2011 was a crazy MAC year. Kittens and Akron are both 9-7 and get first round games. Miami has losing overall record and gets 3 seed. We beat them in that marathon game in which everyone fouled out. Then Ohio who has almost everyone back from the championship season except Bassett loses in OT to Ball State. That must have sent Groce into a tailspin. Then he comes back with vengeance next year. We beat #1 seed Kent in the final in OT. Kent makes a run in the NIT. Geno Ford bails on Kent. Gets the million $ contract from Bradley. Kent sues Ford and wins. Bradley fires Ford a few years later. Fateful year.

  19. I'm going to chalk up this inane discussion to the fact that we all have nervous energy as we await tonight's game. Clark is packing his tent, cooler and overnight bag.

  21. While at OU, Groce had those guys playing their best ball come March, and it led to 3 NCAA tournament wins. Nothing would help keep this discussion alive and proven like shocking teams in the MAC tournament this year. Let's get that W tomorrow.

  28. Relationships are with coaches not schools. Just because those kids ended up at UA doesn't mean the new staff can just go to Houston and expect the same results overnight.

  29. I hadn't even thought about that part of it. I don't think I'd pick Ivey as a guy to scuffle with on our own team either.

  30. Western went from being voted first in the MAC west preseason poll to finishing 4th in the west, 9-9 in the conference and 17-14 overall. Hopefully, their disappointing season ends Monday night. Their bigs don't seem to put up great numbers, so the Zips won't be at a huge disadvantage there. Slow down Wilder and play hard.

  31. Not likely. The Zips had success in Houston because Dambrot realized that the area was a hotbed of mid level d-1 recruits. The Houston area is huge(6.2million) and growing fast. Add into that, there are relatively few d-1 schools in Texas. A plan was made that Charles Thomas would heavily recruit the area. It took several years for the results to materialize. Our current staff is more likely to look for talent flowing through the prep school system.
