  1. A little light reading about Arth's contract. https://www.crainscleveland.com/kevin-kleps-blog/new-akron-football-coach-tom-arths-five-year-deal-includes-incentives-can-push

  2. Here's a hudl video of Joey Paulus. It's a year old. He's left-foot dominant. I don't know a lot about soccer, but that has to be a good thing for playing the left side of the pitch, right?

  4. Arth just had a nice interview with Reghi at halftime. Pretty impressive guy. Said his staff will hopefully be complete in a few days. Should include some UTC coaches as well as a number of Ohio coaches that can recruit the state of Ohio. Re: signing day, he said he wouldn't feel comfortable with his kid signing tomorrow with a coach he's never met, so he's not putting pressure on kids and hopefully giving them a chance to get to know him and sign in February. Good stuff imo

  5. You are correct, sir. Now, an offensive player who is left-footed may often play on the right so that he can cut inside for lefty shot. The further back an outside player is positioned, the more likely he will play on his predominant side. Lefty Defender is more likely to drive to end line to cross with left foot. You are asking the right questions.

  6. A bad angle to this could be that a college keeps a coach on staff until after the early signing period to save recruits then fire him and hire a replacement for the next round of signings. I hope that never happens.

  7. I know peanuts compared to guys like @Zip_ME87 and @fknbuflobo, but having a left footer is huge for a balanced attack. Especially the way Akron plays and builds up their offensive attack, this kid could be a huge component. Anybody else think the ball looked small in the videos? Haha. Might see more and more kids coming to Akron from Medina, too. Their coach is Simon Spelling.

  8. Yes, he has been on the sidelines at games with Larry, and he did halftime tv (this year I think). “I’ve watched Tom Arth grow from the good little quarterback out of St. Raphael’s at the youth camps in Cleveland that I would help at, to the successful quarterback at St. Ignatius, John Carroll and Colts, to the fantastic coach he is today. He was a smart kid who learned from the great coaches here in Cleveland. With that background and the facilities he has to work with at the University of Akron, I know he will elevate that football program to championship levels of success. We expect, and we will win, on and off the field.” Bernie Kosar Retired Quarterback Cleveland Browns

  12. "Hey mom and dad - I don't want to go to Akron anymore. I want to go to Liberty." "Liberty? What the heck?" "Their new coach is real religious. Jesus Christ is the only one he's ever met that can hold his junk." "Who is their new coach?" "Hugh Freeze."

  13. Looks like we offered this guy who was also recruited by UT-C. Has offers from UAB and Ark State as well. Most important thing here IMO is him tagging Davern Williams, as that would indicate he will be on the staff. He's been brought up before by I think @zzx, but he was at EMCC on Last Chance U, with Arth's staff at UT-C. Seems like a good coach and recruiter. UT-C's biggest recruits, where they really seemed to punch above their weight, last year were Dlineman.

  14. The 90s - early 2000s MAC was a tad bit harder to sweep

  15. They already beat St. Bona by 18. The real question is how are their fans coping with their home schedule being St. Francis (PA), Dartmouth, Marist, Le Moyne, and Southern Illinois?

  16. No team has ever swept MAC and its not like the MAC didn't have some great teams in the 90s-early 00s. The MAC, even outside of Buffalo, looks really strong this year. I expect UB to drop 1-2 games. Hopefully they are to us

  17. Again, waaaaaaaaay to many turnovers. That level of play won't work in the MAC, but there's still some time to iron things out. I was not pleased with their play against that weird 1-3-1 zone. Too little ball movement. I also was not happy with the way they responded to the press. Glad TSU ran some of that stuff to help get the Zips ready. Kudos to the TSU kids for playing hard sportsmanlike ball all night.

  18. We shot the ball well but this was some pretty ugly basketball. A lot of stupid turnovers from both teams. There was very little continuity to this game. At least we saw a couple of our centers score although Sales and Poke had dunks that were blocked and Deng missed a wide open bunny. The commentator indicated that we have 4 centers and Groce is waiting for one of them to step up. After tonights game he is still waiting. Looks like he might be waiting all season.

  19. Just pulled Lance Leipold's bio. Buffalo actually lost one more game in his first year compared to the year before he took over. He actually even regressed, only winning 2 games in his second season. Didn't even have a winning season until this year (his fourth year). I think its fair to assume there is quite a gap making that jump that these coaches likely have to adjust to. I would imagine that is a large part of UT-C's immediate regression, along with other factors I'm sure (which have been brought up). Let's hope Arth cut his teeth at UT-C and can hit the ground running here. I like the fact that he 1) is a local guy who seems to want to be in the area and 2) isn't always looking for the next job, even though recent history might suggest otherwise. Keeping him here at least an extra year or two if he's kicking ass would be nice and would likely do wonders in making our program more than a flash in the pan in the MAC.

  22. Ugly stretch here for the Zips. This team is awful and they are letting them stay in the game.

  23. Keep an eye on this guy. New staff offered him (also recruited at UT-C). 3 years to play 2. https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Koby-Perry-121065/RecruitInterests/ Another one we just offered that Arth was recruiting at UT-C. Looks like 3 years to play 3. Apparently originally at OK St. https://247sports.com/player/james-lewis-83495/

  26. Good article. I liked hearing Williams say we need to recruit northeast Ohio. Too many local kids are going to competing MAC and other G5 schools. Lets find a way of keeping the best at home then go to Florida or wherever to supplement the talent.

  27. So Kosar shows up in person to support this guy. And,apparently has a history with him from the earliest. Wonder if Williams has something in mind as far as having Bernie somehow associated with the program. Still a whole lot of people around here who remember what he and the Browns did in the '80's. Even if he would work with the QB's in the offseason or do some PR for the football program. That would certainly help raise the profile a bit.

  28. GT's written a really good article here. George Thomas: New coach Tom Arth will look north to help bolster recruiting Got me pretty excited about the future of Zips football. Also gave me a lot of respect for Kato. Not only did he suffer a high ankle sprain, but he also had to have post-season surgery on a torn meniscus which he played on during the final four games of the season. His quotes in this article display great maturity and a team-first attitude. Much impressed. Go Zips!

  29. From GoZips.com... What They’re Saying About Tom Arth . . . “I was fortunate to have Tom Arth as a teammate for a few seasons with the Colts as well as an instructor at our passing camp. With his football knowledge and work ethic, it was easy to see that Tom had the makings of a successful head coach. I congratulate Tom and wish him the best at the University of Akron.” Peyton Manning Retired Quarterback Indianapolis Colts | Denver Broncos “I had a chance to see Tom Arth on a daily basis when he was a quarterback with the Colts and have followed his coaching career thereafter. Tom has the unique ability to combine his knowledge of football with his understanding of how to build a winning culture. He possesses all the traits you look for in a leader. This is an exciting time for Akron football.” Tom Telesco General Manager Los Angeles Chargers “Congratulations to the University of Akron, the Akron Athletics Department, and Tom Arth on the recent hiring to lead their football program. Tom is an outstanding person and leader with a track record of success both as a player and a coach. Tom has had a positive impact in all of his stops in developing a winning culture on all levels. The Zips are in good hands with Tom Arth as their head football coach.” Nick Caserio Director of Player Personnel New England Patriots “I’ve watched Tom Arth grow from the good little quarterback out of St. We expect, and we will win, on and off the field.” Bernie Kosar Retired Quarterback Cleveland Browns -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't think this hire is anything to scoff at. Those quotes aren't from the St. Ignatius AD or the best man at his wedding (I'm assuming none of these guys were his best man, but for the sake of a cool story, I actually hope I'm wrong). You have an NFL GM, the Director of Player Personnel for arguably the most successful franchise in the history of the NFL, arguably the best QB of all time, and a beloved former Browns QB. I know quotes are simply quotes, but clearly Larry Williams dialed up all of his connections to find what he feels is the right guy. During the presser, Tom had some strong energy. As @NWAkron stated, I can see how he impressed those whom interviewed him. Football is going in the way of young, energetic, inspiring coaches. It really wouldn't surprise me if Larry Williams sat down with John Dorsey at some point to make a quick, yet solid list of qualities to target, because Dorsey is a firm believer in setting the tone in the locker room with the right culture. We'll see what product is put on the field, but you can tell Arth is hungry and will inspire the team he fields. He seems to fit the bill of the new football coaching trend.
