  1. Darn it. I left before the TD. However, on my way out I did pass Larry Williams and uttered to him, "There's only so much I can endure."

  3. My nephew is the right guard for Hoban. I was at Benedictine vs.Hoban this year & Rosser had a bad game, dropped some easy passes. Coach Z was there for the first half. If Hoban has a weakness it is their passing defense & Benedictine did throw fairly well against Hoban but Rosser did not play well. IMO, which isn’t much

  4. No letters of Intent in today... yet (2:15 p.m.). I don't know what kind of competition Taylor Currie is facing at Mott Community College, but he's done well his first two games. This tweet is from his first game: 18 points & 14 rebounds. He did only shoot 33%, so it'd be nice to see a higher shooting percentage. But it was only game #1. This tweet is from Mott's 2nd game: 23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks.

  5. Akron does offer. OHSAA sends out a request to ALL High Schools and Independent sites like Infocision, Dix, YSU etc. if they are interested in hosting games, and the schools/sites submits ayes or no answer and the dates they are willing to host. It is then up to the OHSAA to select sites. In football and soccer, sites are not determined until the match/game's opponents are known. Once that is known, OHSAA takes into account the logistics to try to make the event somewhat equidistant for both schools. Hence why sites are not announced until Sunday afternoon, getting clearance from the independent site and informing the schools before it's published to the public. The University did submit dates they would accept, and Friday was not one of them because Friday Akron hosts two soccer games as part of the MAC tournament and also will be hosting two women's basketball games (The Akron Classic) and a men's basketball game. I know, "but this is football". It takes staff to run ALL events on campus, even if it is not an NCAA event. The facilities staff is already thin, and hosting an OHSAA game didn't fit. Financially, it doesn't matter whether it's a D1 or a D7 school, the site get's the same monies. Perry vs. Massillon would not make sense from a travel standpoint anyway. Mentor-McKinley was the game that would have made sense if Friday was available. Last year Akron offered to host playoff games on every single independent site nights and was awarded zero. So it's just up to the OHSAA to determine sites, and Akron did not turn down "your" game, despite the rumors you may hear.

  6. The RPO makes it difficult for lineman to get downfield, because well, you never know if the play is truly going to end up being a run or pass, as the QB has the option to hand it off or pass..hence "Run-Pass Option (RPO)". If he passes and the lineman get to the 2nd level and block the LBs, that is illegal man downfield. Am I missing something with the other responses? Strategy seems pretty clear cut to me. Outside of Akron games, it does get called, though seems refs miss it plenty as well.

  7. Our OL looked much improved. I really liked what I saw out of Xavior Gray at LT. He'll retain his redshirt and he looks like he'll be a four year starter. X was the missing element. With X at LT, we were able to move Trevor Brown to RT and shore up the right side of the line, which had been the problem all season long. Peter Hayes-Patrick finally saw considerable game action. I thought he looked pretty good. A few times he zigged when he should have zagged and missed some running lanes, but of course it's easier to see that when you have more of a bird's eye view. Someone lamented that we don't have a big back like EMU's tank. Well, let's keep our fingers crossed that we don't lose the commitment of DeAndre Bulley (6-1, 220). He's tearing up Michigan high school football right now & if we sign him we certainly will. But Hayes-Patrick is a pretty big back himself, coming in at 6-0, 210. It was pretty thrilling see Timothy Scippio with the long TD catch. He's a hard worker who always seems to stay positive, so it's great to see him have a highlight like that. Jeremiah Knight continues to impress. I like Julian Hicks. We were ridiculously deep at WR to begin the season. But the game is won and lost on the line of scrimmage. I'm breathing a sigh of relief that Davon'te Jest is okay. (Last night on twitter he indicated that he is.)

  8. I"m only searching for answers. Basketball is so much easier to understand. I could look at the team Groce had the first year and see what was missing and what was going wrong. I've never professed to have any football acumen, but, damn, this is hard for me to figure out. I like that you gave some positives. I went out there tonight, and it was a miserable experience, and I left angry and pissed off (and I've sat through all sorts of weather conditions for Zips games). I would like to hear an honest assessment from the coach and AD on what is wrong and what is the game plan. They at least owe that to that 57 fans who went out there tonight. And they owe it to the band who no one sees play and the cheerleaders no one sees cheer and the dance team no one sees dance.

  9. Caught the 4th quarter on TV. Was surprised to hear the commentators sound so....nice, in talking about an 0-9 team. Anyhow, my astute, expert observation of watching 15 min. was that EMU's players were all stronger and faster than our Zips. Was glad to see players still give the effort in a pretty futile situation. p.s. that empty frozen tomb of a stadium will surely not help with recruiting. p.s.s. I hate those "script Akron" helmets they look like Div II.

  10. Thank you. If he is unimpressed and downright perplexed with our defensive scheme that carries a lot of weight.

  11. Right around the 7:55 mark of the 3rd Quarter of the EMU game, the ESPN color man noted something above my pay grade and light years beyond George Thomas' competence. He said that the Zips don't block the defense's linebackers? And that he had asked Arth about this perplexing strategy earlier in the week and Arth had said they prefer not to do that as it has something to do with the RPO they run and they like their OL to focus on blocking the DL and, I think he said, "keeping their hands down." I have no idea what that means, but neither did the ESPN color man. I wish I knew who the commentator was, but I believe he is a former player and has seen more than his fair share of football. Anyhow, he went on to say, "I'd love to play linebacker against these guys [Akron]. Last week they put a Bowling Green linebacker in the hall of fame off just one game." This actually sounds like it could be, unlike much of this thread, an insightful criticism and point of discussion.

  13. The Zips women are hosting the Akron Classic this Friday and Saturday. On Friday Kent State plays #24 Michigan at 2 pm and the Zips play Purdue Ft. Wayne at 4:30. On Saturday the Zips play Michigan and Kent plays PFW. I've only seen the Zips women's games promoted on social media. C'mon marketing staff, you could be promoting a tripleheader on Friday!

  15. that was me kreed... posted on Game 5 - UMass thread....here's the summary - Here's what we have - The MAC has 110 players from the area selected. Akron leads by far with 37, and that's after taking Burkhart off the list. Here's the list: Akron - 37 Kent State - 21 Toledo - 17 Ohio - 14 Bowling Green -7 Miami - 6 Buffalo - 5 EMU - 3 Ball State - 2 NIU, CMU, WMU have none on their roster The Big 10 (or 14) have a total of 50 players from the area selected. Here's how they stack up: Ohio State - 17 Michigan State - 11 Michigan - 7 Northwestern - 5 Penn State, Purdue and Minnesota each have 2 Rutgers, Indiana, Nebraska, and Wisconsin each have 1. Maryland, Illinois and Iowa do not have any. The "other" schools have 24 players from the area. I was very surprised to see that Cincinnati leads with 16! Notre Dame has 4, Pitt has 3 and WVU has 1. Marshall has none.

  16. Someone else on this board counted up the number of NEO players on each MAC teams roster. Akron actually has the most. This hasn't led to increased attendance and has led to our 0-10 record. The problem is we've been recruiting Ohio players who for the most part aren't FBS caliber talent. We need better players regardless if they are from Ohio, PA, Georgia, Florida etc. Did any of the players Bowden recruited from Akron East produce?

  17. The RPO offense has kind of only recently made its way into the NFL. No teams were running it 10+ years ago except for the rare game here or there. It has been in the college game for decades so I'm surprised he wasn't aware of it from then, especially since now he is a commentator. Nebraska won multiple national championships utilizing it.

  19. Be careful with comments like that...you might get banned! And how exactly are these OL and DL transfers going to get to Akron? It's an 0-12 team, with a no-name head-coach...in the middle of Ohio.

  24. Color guy is Ray Bentley, 7 yr NFL player - 6 with Buffalo. Memorable to me for painting his face with a lot of eye black. Played at CMU.

  25. Bright spots - Boogie and Alvin playing hard. Not much else... Definitely the worst Akron football team I’ve ever seen. Worse than Faust’s 1-10 team. Hope we get 5 grad transfer OL’s and 5 grad transfer DL’s for 2020.

  30. 247sports dot com ranks Garvin Clarke as the #6 recruit in the state of Ohio (class of '20) and #1 PG/CG in the state (#25 in the nation). Get that young man's signature tomorrow! Go Zips!

  31. Just a little reminder: Tomorrow (Wednesday, November 13th) is the first day of the D-1 Basketball Early Signing Period. Most of the action should happen tomorrow, however the signing period runs for one week (11/13-through-11/20). Go Zips!

  33. two quick notes....the ESPN "talent" - Bentley and the play-by-play actually were not at the game, but ensconced in another city and just got the satellite feed and did their schtick from there. Not that it changes Bentley's comments or observations, sometimes it's easier to do watching the monitor than in the booth. Don't know if it was weather relate or budget related. Second, the Beacon did NOT even send Thomas to the game, or he decided not to come, leaving it to an independent "stringer" to write an article. 5 freakin' city blocks, free food, and you get to stay warm in the pressbox George, WTF?

  37. Peering into my computer screen, I think I saw two members get advised to ratchet back negative Arth comments. One complied and now rarely posts and the other either quit or failed to comply and got booted. I'm not 100% certain about this and admit that it has been some time since I cleaned my computer screen.
