There are few things better than the Zips getting discussed about their greatness during a nationally televised Kent game that the Zips are not even playing in.4 points

Dawson is having a nice bounceback year for Marshall. He's shooting 34.8% from deep, closer to the guy he was in 21-22. And he's shooting a TON of threes. He has 210 attempts in 28 games this season...he shot 170 in 35 games for us last year. Baker hasn't played for SIU since December 8th - appears he suffered an injury of some kind. Prather Jr. cooled down considerably after his hot start but is contributing as a rotation player. Bandaogo has been a solid starter for a pretty average Cincinnati team.4 points

Kent is a dumb team. They don't really run an offense, they miss tons of ball movement, take stupid shots, and make stupid mistakes. Exhibit A: That game went OT because they fouled Miami 30 ft from the basket while up by 1 with 12 seconds left (sound familiar?). Exhibit B: There was a play late in regulation or in OT where they had a mismatch in the post and essentially waited until Potter go back in position before throwing the lob down low. Spoiler alert: Potter stole the pass with ease.3 points

By Akron not having an obvious Player of the Year candidate doesn’t that just strengthen the argument for Groce being Coach of the Year?3 points

When Dambrot was at Akron I think Keith only won the award 2 or 3 times. The reasoning being the talent on the roster was held against him. Voters seem to forget in collegiate athletics a coaches job is more than just X's and O's. He's also the GM. Recruiting is probably 60% of the job. I think it would take Akron going 18-0 or 17-1 for Groce to win it. Unfairly as it might be.2 points

Weird year for the MAC, across the board. There's no single player who is dominating the conference. Heck, the leading scorer (Jones from NIU) is averaging only 17 a game. Nate is 16th in the MAC in scoring, 24th in rebounding, 7th in assists and 3rd in steals. Solid and multi-dimensional but nothing that jumps out. If the voters look at who's the best player on the best team he probably has a chance.2 points

I thought our offense looked better in the latter part of the first half. Really need Hardman or Wilson to hit a three. Also, Nate came out after only a minute in the first half and was not in at the end of the second half. Makes me wonder if he is hurt or sick. He certainly has not played to his usual standards and not even sure if he has scored.1 point

Good point. Bud's checkbook is certainly an advantage, but that view (often voiced by residents of Brimfield and environs) fails to recognize their own failures in building their own programs. It also doesn't recognize the other factors where the Zips have an advantage- better coaching...tradition of winning and championships...nice facilities (other than the JAR)...1 point

Groce has to be the favorite right now. Graduated everyone and then undefeated the next year? I guess Steele could get some consideration too but I think Groce would be a very heavy betting favorite as of today1 point

I think the All-MAC teams will also be interesting. On one end no Zips player looks particularly great in the counting stats voters often prefer. On the other hand the Zips are dog walking the conference so how can a voter not include them.1 point

I just saw a Zips social media post showing Sammy Hunter and Xavier Castañeda as part of regional international FIBA qualifying tournaments and while Sammy playing for Bahamas was no surprise, it WAS unexpected to find Xavier in qualifying with the national team of Bosnia and Hertzegovina! Not Puerto Rico. How did THAT happen?1 point

Yeah...I think it is more likely that he'd have tried to parlay that $30k into a few more bales of the chronic and turn it into $200k. They say "There's no greater tragedy than unrealized potential". Whenever I hear the phrase I immediately think about that Zips basketball team.1 point

The ESPN+ replay has Groce's and Rique's speeches. It also has the video from the former players that hasn't been posted anywhere yet1 point

Historically, basketball has been reluctant to retire numbers as the tradition is to not have a number over 55, as those make it more difficult for an official to signal to the scorer's table with two hands. With only 55 numbers, you could eliminate a decent portion of the numbers over time as you retired them. As a result, the jersey goes in the rafters rather than getting retired.1 point

Well there's the whole problem where Akron cut a majority of it's Master's programs. I hold a master's in chemistry from Ohio University because Akron was dumping most of its programs. Akron has chem, but not the supporting staff or courses for what I needed/wanted. It takes staff to make a decent program. You can't just cut them, scatter them to the wind and then expect to make decent master's programs. So, like GP1, unless you actually hire (and fairly compensate) the people running master's programs, it absolutely is just a shameless money grab.1 point
