2024-25 Post Mortem and Looking Ahead to 2025-26
zvillezip replied to Zippy87's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
He is gonna get more money. Good luck to him. Groce and staff will get another good one. -
To take the next step... Keep Groce. Keep our players. Akron guys. Need more size at the wing and another big. In the MAC, centers are 6'8" and 225. The wings for Arizona and other major conferences are that size. We got destroyed inside by St. Mary's and Arizona. I often wondered if we would ever see Lykes and Okonkwo in the game together. I don't recall them ever being in the game at the same time. I know that is to protect against fouls. We need that size against teams like Arizona.

Amani Lyles was a man in this game. I think his three pointer in the second half started the confidence and his rebounding was superb. Great outlet pass for the game winner. Incredible poise and determination by the team in the second half. They took the best punch Miami had and recovered. So much resilience.

Did Tavari Johnson actually foul a guy on the hand with his eyeball? Most ridiculous call ever.
-
Shammah went JUCO so now he gets that time back.

Groce and his staff have a history of developing players into big time players. Okonkwo is a good college player. If he sticks around and develops as he could under this staff he could be great, especially in the MAC. Another year of development, especially focused on offensive skills, would probably make him more attractive to overseas pro ball. I hope he returns. Would be the makings of another great Akron team.

Tavari Johnson, next Chicago PG
zvillezip replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
The five out, motion offense has enabled Tavari to use his offensive skills much more so than in previous seasons. The floor spacing on offense this year is good for Tavari. He is so dangerous running the pick n roll. He can get by the defender, step back for a three, or make a good pass to the roll. He has also grown up by not always trying to make a spectacular pass and instead making a solid pass. He occasionally tries to put too much mustard on the pass which results in a spectacular play, or a turnover. Some clean up is still needed here. As for defense, his athleticism has improved immensely. He has obviously worked hard on his body and is able to keep his body in position in front of the offensive player. He has also been able to block several shots this year with his improved athleticism. He is not a great defender yet, but he is also not a liability any more. -
2024 Ohio High School Championships

It is a money making scheme for OHSAA. Started with COVID and OHSAA is making so much money from it they won't go back to 8 teams per region. Some schools make the playoffs because there are 16 spots and only 17 teams in the region. -
Game 12 (Week 14) vs Toledo - 7pm EST (TV - ESPN2)
zvillezip replied to catdaddyp's topic in Akron Zips Football
The offense turned a corner half way through the season when we started dedicating some run plays to stay on schedule. The offensive line started to gel and Finley got comfortable. Keep calling some dedicated running plays early on possessions next year to setup the pass. The defense was pretty solid all year including tonight. At the end we were gassed as our offense left the defense on the field too much. The special teams were so much better this year. Good kicker. Great punter. And replacing the punt returner the last few games was a key. Finally, we see some positive things. -
Week 9 vs Buffalo - 12pm EST (TV - CBSSN)

The Zips played well today. Offensive line was moving the defense, Simmons ran hard Finley threw several good balls. The defense played strong again and special teams were good. The Zips have MAC talent. What hurts is the lack of discipline and accountability. The coaches and player leaders on the team need to get this in check in order to continue momentum and to improve.

Until JoeMo is able to manufacture consistent offense (run the damn ball) over the course of the season, I think all broadcasters must be forbidden from calling him an offensive genius. They must have said it a dozen times yesterday and we were minus 20 yards rushing at the time. The RPO is not working. Finley is getting crushed. Can’t sustain a drive. Can’t run the ball. Pass on first down for minus 2 yards. Pass on second down for 2 yards. Now you have a 3rd and 10 which is like a 10% chance of picking up. We must have had ten 3rd and 10s yesterday. Massive offensive changes to schemes and structures need to be made. I think we have proven the RPO is not the right offense for this team.

Game over
-
Gotta be the worst offense if FBS
-
Absolutely horrible offensive performance. 3rd and 10 on every possession. Joe Mo needs to make a big change in the offense. Maybe he should not be calling plays.
-
Defense and special teams get great field position and an offensive TD.
-
The offense has been so bad. Our special teams and defense are playing well. So frustrating to watch
-
Put the third string in. Too many injuries piling up. Time to turn the game off.
-
This has been worst coached game by JoeMo I have ever seen. He has to improve before he can expect the team to improve. Coach Tibs should take over next year.
-
Most important half of football for coach JoeMo. He is on the verge of losing die hard fans such as me and losing his team. Good first drive. Need a few more and better game management.
-
Very poorly coached game by JoeMo. Inexcusable penalties. Bad clock management. Pathetic offense.

Play of the game by the holder

Ohio State is LOADED and they are looking to score BIG. Prediction is OSU 66, Akron 6.
