You are out of your mind if you think that the Rowdies weren't going the entire time. I was down there right on the north side, we were cheering and supporting the Zips as well as harassing the CSU players and officials THE ENTIRE TIME. What is the point of the student section other than getting in opponents heads? That's the general fan populations job, and you guys failed...miserably. It's stupid to argue when we are all fans of the same thing but the truth is, many of you have no idea what college basketball is or is about. Not true in any way. The truth of the matter is, we did research on players before the game and he is not muslim at all (seen his facebook). The terrorist comment comes from his beard as well as the fact that he went as Osama Bin Laden for Halloween. It's on his facebook. I think many people answered this one with the excuse that the scheduling is horrible. Most people went home for the holidays. What moron scheduled a game the night before thanksgiving? I was pretty impressed with the student turnout compared to some games in recent years on thanksgiving break. Overall though, you are right. Student support sucks.

I agree with Meatwad...our defense wasn't that bad tonight, certainly good enough to win. Our rebounding and offense is a different story. I really think KD might be on to something with his admittal in the post-game of playing some guys too much. We looked sluggish with the ball and really got pushed around late on both ends. Hopefully someone on the bench can step up and give Dambrot some minutes. Also, i've watched countless basketball games the past few days with all the tournaments going on and what not. In none of them did i see the ridiculous petty foul calls that our officials seem to call every game. It's unbelievable how boring a basketball game can get when they stop play every 2 minutes over some ridiculous call (and it surely goes both ways). The refs are TERRIBLE. Yeah yeah i know.... I couldn't agree more with you guys on the fans influencing the game. Having played high school/college athletics i can tell you that there is nothing like having your home crowd loud and behind you. This holds especially true after you just made a big play to swing back the momentum or just came out of a less of momentum. Nothing works at pumping you up better than hearing people go nuts. I just dont get how people around here attend college basketball games and just stay quiet. It's COLLEGE BASKETBALL! There is nothing like it in the world, it's supposed to be crazy, loud, and intimidating for opponents, we really need to get that memo. I will say however that the Rowdies brought it much better tonight. After that embarrassment that was the soccer game last Sunday, they finally redeemed themselves. Glad they realized it's not about singing like hippies but about heckling, screaming, and being obnoxious. THAT'S what college athletics are about. *applause* Now the rest of you: Have some fun (have a few pre-game beers at BH, 69 Taps, BW3, Thursdays...etc. if you have to) and get loud and nuts with the Rowdies! Don't know if this has been posted but LINK The leaderboard for coaches only shows the top 50 or so, so no IcantCoach. He's somewhere between 0 and 173 votes though.

Thanks....and YES we are going to be covering a lot of hoops. Football was tough this year as we got in the game late but basketball should be good. There is a lot of good talent in the area, girls and guys...hopefully some state titles for the area. Also, anyone interested in Summit County HS football should check out the Turkey Day Summit County All-Star game on Thursday at St. V. No Buchtel players obviously but still should be a very cool event. p.s. Working on adding some new writers as well (looking for some btw if anyone is majoring in some sort of media, is a good writer, or just wants to as a hobby...message me or email at mike@akronsportsnow.com)

haha i just was looking at this a day or two ago. I'm mad i missed the moment! But Zach....IM COMING FOR YOU

Okay, thanks, I appreciate the effort. We are Zip fans. We are used to the long and hard way to get what we want. You should see what I had to go through to not get my Wagner jersey this year. I can only imagine. Probably as much pain as I was just to get our media passes for the soccer season. I think we didn't have them for the first week or two. And the same with the basketball season. We literally got them the day before the home opener for the Men's team. Better than CSU or Can't State at least. CSU told me: "We dont have media passes, just show a business card or an ID from your publication" I asked how I would get on the field for photos, they said "oh just say your media and walk on through". And people think we are small time! Can't State: Well they never got back to me, and i've already emailed them for the january basketball game (two weeks ago)...no reply yet. It's just ridiculous. Essentially what i'm saying is: Be glad that they at least answer emails/respond to phone calls at UA. It could be far worse.

you better watch out! You're going to make R4R's list of "bad zips fans"!

This has become a regular feature of the 2010 Zips men's soccer team. What gives? This was not a one time event. It has happened repeatedly costing the Zips a win at OSwho and an embarrassing loss at Cleveland State. It took the shine off a nice win in the MAC tournament when Western Michigan scored a quick goal late in the game and the Zips up three-nil. And, Root, it did happen at OSwho and Cleveland State. So ... where is the problem? We pretty much know that David Meves was the architect of the OSwho debacle. Can he be blamed for the other games? Is it the defender line, the midfielders, the attackers or a combination of any and all of them going to sleep? I wonder. What ever it is; it is ugly. Ill agree Meves was to blame for OSU AND for a few other goals this year where he was out of position. He seems to be day dreaming at times. Anyone notice yesterday twice when he turned the ball over lazily? The one time he just rolled it right to a WVU player in front of our goal, luckily a Zips defender bottled him up and reclaimed possession soon after. The other time he just drop kicked a ball out directly to the sideline, it was ridiculous. Something is up with him. I will say that the CSU game shouldn't be blamed on Meves, he made a few NICE saves in that one and the second goal he gave up shouldn't have counted. The official was lazy on that one.

ABJ Notices Low InfoCision Attendance
RootforRoo44 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Maybe im crazy but I would no doubt rather tailgate, hammer 12 beers, and watch football (even terrible football) than stay inside. Especially when it's my team! I know that most college students would find any excuse to drink, so what gives? Where are all of the students? It really doesnt make sense to me and i'm someone who plays WAY too many video games. -
I don't know about you guys but i'm not too worried about what happened tonight. Yeah the Zips got lazy for a few minutes and allowed a few goals but it happened when we had a 3-0 lead. I just dont see them making the same mistake when up one or tied. Either way, i'm sure Coach Porter is going to ensure that anyways with some hardcore running this week in practice. On another note, we need to get more fans to a game like this. Under 3,000?! Are you kidding me? A lot of Rowdies need to start showing up! Still, the one's that showed up were alright, though even they got a bit lazy at times. Guys, next week let's kick it up a notch. Also, ASN coverage.

ABJ Notices Low InfoCision Attendance
RootforRoo44 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Anyone notice the attendance for the last game went up as the week went on? Wednesday night: GoZips.com originally says attendance was just over 6,000 (Take my word for it) Early Thursday: Official box score states 7,671 as the "official" attendance. Sunday: Akron Beacon Journal claims 11,178 as the attendance. What the heck? -
Found some info on the Cal-UCSB game. Though nothing about the other red cards. UPDATE/EDIT: Check the comments for that article. UCSB seems to think they were royally screwed but this i guess is what happened:
-
Offensively. Hopefully he shows up on the defensive end Wednesday, or we are in serious trouble. Nikola was especially terrible at getting into position on rebounds. McClanahan could teach him a thing or two on how to box out. Though I wouldn't knock anyone too bad on their defense last night as many people were just out of place because of some questionable defenses we were running that YSU continually broke down. Dambrot has got to make adjustments when even the fans are realizing that something isnt working.

LeBron to distribute 700 Thanksgiving meals
RootforRoo44 replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
You do realize that would have been declared blasphemous about 6 months ago? Funny how things change when a guy shows his true colors. -
I guess the facts are there. And i guess i must have misremembered it, i just had the memory of him being pulled out multiple times early in his career for stupid things (that he did) like dambrot likes to do with his younger players. I still stick by the fact that Conyers was wasted until his senior year. It was pretty well known that he was a great pickup for the program when he first arrived, he had a lot of raw talent. Thank God Nitro broke through in his junior year (i know it's early but i really think he has what it takes, i'm sure some of the people on here that know me in real life will back me up on the fact that i've been calling for him to get more time and a chance to get into a rhythm since the beginning of last year) as he will have more time to help us. P.S. Thanks ZW on the ASN comment.

What a wild and fun day of the tournament. Too bad it's not all televised like the hoops tourney.

I've honestly been saying this for years. Don't forget that Linhart was a similar thing as well. There are a few questionable things that Dambrot continues to do that really hurt us(short leash on players, inability to figure out what to do with a center). He needs to start realizing it, and i'm sure he will. He did go out and get some athletic players this past offseason at least, so i know he can figure this out. Your Linhart reference and example is preposterous! If KD had such a short leash on Linhart and diminished his career at Akron, how did Nate: Appear in 134 games (#1 all-time at the time of graduation)? Score 1,023 career points? Record 186 career steals (#3 in team history)? Become #8 in career blocked shots? Rank #2 all-time in Freshman free-throw percentage? Rank #3 all-time in Junior year steals? Rank #3 all-time in Senior year steals? Make the 2006 MAC All-Freshman team? Become the 2009 MAC Defensive Player of the Year? Get voted the 2009 MAC Tournament MVP? Have one of the highest minutes per game average during all four of his years? That’s my case for disagreeing with your assertion about KD. I think KD distributes minutes to the players ready to play each night in light of the matchups at any given time on the floor. Nate was ready almost every night and relished taking on the toughest defensive assignment each night. I’ll await Roo44’s argument on Linhart’s diminished career caused by Coach Dambrot. Stats dont show how Linhart was underused. He was no doubt our best defender in his sophomore and junior season, he came out with hustle and a gritty attitude that no one else had. Dambrot played him stupidly (much like how he had Zeke and Bardo guarding their two guard at times last night, pulling them out to the perimeter. Something he's done for years with our big guys) and didn't utilize him as needed against other team's top offensive threats until his senior year. I will admit it was a little too much to group him with Conyers and McClanahan.

Have your eyes checked after you play Butler. I know more about the Horizon League than you do. Luckily our league has an online video network: HorizonLeagueNetwork in which you can see all the teams play their home games live for free. I've seen a great deal of basketball on there the last two years and I am telling you: Butler, Detroit, and Cleveland State will duel it out for the #1 spot in the Horizon this year. Hell Dickie V even went out on a limb to say that Detroit could be this year's Butler and make a deep run in the tourney. Expect 2, perhaps 3, from the HL to make the tourney this year. Dickie V is out of his mind as well. And I may know more about Pontiac Trans Am's than you but I wouldn't state that they are faster than the Bugatti Veyron. So let's be real.

I think an interesting stat in the game is second chance points considering the Zips allowed YSU to grab 15 offensive rebounds to their 11: YSU: 7 ZIPS: 12 Then again, who know's if the "official boxscore" on gozips.com is ever right. So far through two home games we've seen a combined 6 fast break points between both teams in each game. That cannot be right.

Most middle school coaches have more head coaching experience than our coach...so that makes sense.
-
You guys are much improved, but lack the experience to close out those barn-burners. I hope you win lots of games this year. If the Zips want to beat CSU, they'll need to play with the effort shown against Dayton. Playing so lackadaisical like tonight won't cut it. BTW, can the Rowdies please start some MVP chants for McClanahan? i'm guessing that was a jab at McClanahan in the postgame?

couldn't agree more Zach...I wonder what kind of effect it has on the players when they look up and see one middle aged woman standing up and clapping and attempting to get the crowd into it but the rest of the crowd just sitting on their hands. The students were good though, maybe a little too good as they really got into the officials' heads. The one referee was FURIOUS when the guy in the stormtrooper helmet threw the ball back to him high over his head. Guess that's what they deserve when they are so piss poor at their jobs. So many bad calls it's impossible to count, and yes they went both ways. Just terrible.
