  1. Avoidance of things unpleasant to one's personal beliefs doesn't make those things go away.
  2. Not many were expecting a MAC championship, this year. Felt all along that Bowden needed to get the program to 6-6,this year. That seemed reasonable for a 'rebuild'. Now people are 'assuming' that a team that has played poorly for a month or more and lost three in a row will win two or three out of its last three with two roadies and two good QB's on the other side. Hope, maybe? I keep wondering if Bowden, by insisting on running his offensive 'system' with personnel who appear to be unable to consistently execute that system is putting his players in the best position to win now. The defense has carried the team thus far. Bowden needs to throw them a lifeline..soon.
  3. They didn't 'take the run away'from Pohl, they used it more often.
  4. Good points made by Mr. Thomas. And,no his point was NOT umbrellas. Its is about the poor football 'product' that has been put on the field for years and years. And,some of that responsibility is with the current AD and his administration for making some really bad choices concerning football. Its is also about treating the 'pedestrian' fans who don't sit in the clubs or loges as after thoughts on occasion. Like last year when they didn't feel like clearing the snow from large sections of the stadium and told some season ticket holders they couldn't sit in the seats they had paid for because it wasn't 'safe'. Ya duh,it wasn't safe because the AD chose not to clear the snow. (And,no I wasn't able to sit in a 'better' seat in the lower bowl.) I buy tix and go to games to watch football. I don't sit in the parking lot and drink. I don't stay home to watch games. But when you sit through games like last night where the 'product' on the field was not acceptable AND the weather was even worse I can understand why someone might complain about an umbrella.
  5. This team has been 'offensively challenged' pretty much all year(patsy Howard aside). There almost seems to be an attitude of 'lets throw some stuff on the wall and see what sticks'. The trajectory for the offense has been precipitously downward for a month now. Last season when these guys started winning in November Bowden/Milwee had to or chose to commit to 'dumbing down' the offense and committing to the run to help out his QB (for a couple of different reasons). They were able to control games more adequately which not only helped the QB, it helped the defense stay off the field. Thought they were going to do that last night with some of the two and I think even three back sets. But...Bowden/Milwee wouldn't commit to the ground. They tried to play a game that BG was much better at than the Zips. Throw in some turnovers, some poor decisions and they hung the defense out to dry, again. Not really sure what to think about the people running the offensive side of things at this point. But unless the offense starts pulling its weight these guys are going to have difficulty getting to .500.
  6. Lets not kid ourselves, its all about beating BGSU!
  7. Actually I was thinking more of this: the team is coming out of the locker room, the band is playing 'Akron Blue and Gold' THEN...an image of Leslie Nielson appears over Infocision and urges, 'now go out and win just ONE for the Zippers'.......
  8. Neither the team nor coaches have any identity at this point. Offense with Milwee in control has no idea how to best use the 'talent' it does have. Seems to be pounding the square peg into the round hole. Could be an epiphany Tuesday night, but.....
  9. Joe Dunn is a lightweight, company man. Always has been. Always will be .He needs his job. As far as the rag called the BJ(for good reason) why would anyone ever expect anything more from a first rate second rate newspaper?
  10. Good point. 7 wins seems like a minimum for this team given the losses thus far. A loss to BG with a roadie at Buffalo(good QB) and a homie w/UMASS(good QB) would probably be living too close to the edge in getting to 7 wins. With what is going on with this team right now who knows which one will show up 11-4.
  11. Don't worry about any bowl game. Even if this coaching staff were capable of winning 3 out of the last 4,I question whether this team would be attractive to any bowl committee.
  12. Some strange decision making by Bowden and his staff.
  13. Now that the euphoria of pretty much meaningless games in September has long since passed, reality sets in. My ,hope, for 6-6 was obviously far too optimistic. Last year this program sneaked up on a couple of teams. Not this year. The warts of the coaches(especially) and the personnel are being exposed. Losses like this can't be blamed on personnel. These lay squarely on decision making by the coaching staff. Its that cliche phrase of coaches are hired to put players in the best position to perform at the highest of their capabilities. The last two weeks show that isn't happening yet. Curious.
  14. Haven't seen or heard anything that leads me to believe the Zips should be expected to win this game. Sorry. I am still not confident that TB has a handle on his offense. And,more importantly that Milwee, who is cutting his teeth here is the guy to help pull this offense together with the talent at hand. I think Amato has done a much better job in that regard with the D. Though that would be expected given all his experience. If TB's offense doesn't figure itself out this week, its going to be tough to get to even 6-6 given the schedule. We can all say they 'should' do this and that. But,5-7 last year was a little over the top. 6-6 still seems somewhat realistic. Whether that deserves a bowl game,????????
  15. Was looking at the 2005 roster/record. For those who don't remember thats the last time Zips won anything. If you OBJECTIVELY look at the offensive side of the ball you probably realize that the 2014 version doesn't have the playmakers that the 2005 team had on offense. There is no Hixon,Getsy,Biggs or Arthur on this team. And, the O-line on the '05 team was probably better. On the D side, the 2014 team likely has more 'athletes'. But,the offense in 2005 could score when it needed to. It also had real leaders in Getsy and Biggs and Hixon, the 2014 version doesn't have. And there were some guys on the defensive side who stepped up in crunch time. I thought JD needed to go in 2009,BUT he was able to pull that talent together and probably overachieve with it. We will see in '14 and '15 if this regime can do that.
  16. How about an 'Acme Zip' game type promo? Nobody is going to show up anyway. Sell some cheap tix, give the players a boost with a crowd and make some money off concessions etc. Problem is these days the people in all of the AD's promo positions have as much imagination as my dearly departed grandma. They are robots locked in to the 'easy' looking cash from the leaches at ESPN etc, etc. That is not LOCAL involvement. That is just a way for some snot nosed people in the marketing dept. to thump themselves on the chest. Lets please stop the attendance conversation. It isn't going to change
  17. With the loss to OU,how many show up for BGSU on Tuesday 11-4? And,if there is another loss at Testicle Tech on 10-25 does that significantly affect the number of butts in seats on 11-4? Does a win make any difference?
  18. 'Nuf said!
  19. Sack on Pohl came 'clean' off the LEFT side of the Akron line. Be concerned about the secondary against a team that has a decent QB plus a semblance of a running game. Only 4 more wins for bowl consideration. 6-6 won't do it.
  20. Balsy you were correct. Not a coincidence that on the greatest rushing day by the best Akron RB this season against a legit opponent that they pull the huge upset. Pohl is what he is. Thats not a playmaker or a game changer. Can't put the game on his back. Not capable. If Bowden tries to go back to the 'no run offense' he will blow what now could be a very promising MAC season. Keep the fire under Pohl's ass by inserting Woodson judiciously. And, keep the ball out of Pohl's hands by running the ball. If the D can continue to control games, look out. Sorry folks had to finally chime in.
  21. Northfield Village has its own PD. Twinsburg City has its own PD. Summit S.O. may assist on calls outside those boundaries. Peninsula has its own PD etc, etc. Green does rely on the S.O. New Franklin has its own PD. Now most if not all law enforcement will be in favor of money for the jail and enhancing radio communication amongst the different agencies. Thats a no brainer. However, that doesn't mean that a majority of people in those areas will vote to raise taxes on themselves for that or any other reason The flies in the ointment will be the money that is dedicated for an arena that the vast majority of residents will never use or benefit from and whether lower income people in Akron,Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls who might decide to vote will raise an already regressive tax on themselves. Better hope for a low turnout.
  22. Yawn. Time for a nap.
  23. Without looking it up,how much water goes over Niagara Falls in an hour. Right, who cares? (That is except maybe the guy going over in a barrel.) Many people, will simply not vote for any additional tax no matter what the purpose. Many will not support any new tax dollars going to a sports venue in Akron for the UofA and the city that will benefit few,and will likely not generate the 'promised' economic boost to Summit County in its entirety. And,some will not support any additional tax dollars going to jail upgrades specifically or to the Sheriff's Department in general. Having some knowledge of the state of the jail due to my employment, upgrades have been needed for years. They have been doing emergency(early) releases of prisoners for years. They usually send them to the Glenwood 'Jail'. That way Jim Lawrence and his Oriana House operation gets our tax dollars. Its too bad these issues were coupled. The community needs an upgraded jail more than a downtown arena.
  24. As far as the sales tax is concerned, can't see having to spend more money on essentials like clothing, vehicles, household articles etc etc that I need to buy every day so that part of the income from the tax can go to build an arena. Yep,UofA needs a new one. Has for a long time. No question. But thats not the question. Hell,I sat on the bleachers at Memorial Hall. But unless the University puts some big 'skin' in the game up front its not up to the rest of us to pay for an athletic/activities facility that likely a huge percentage of of Summit County residents will never use or benefit from. And, a number of credible studies show that the economic benefit from sports facilities is usually quite exaggerated. I have no problem using tax dollars that go to improving the safety forces of Summit County. That is a service that all residents need and benefit from. If the powers that be wanted to use a sales tax increase for that, fine, I'll go for it. The politicians and University officials know that voters would never approve a tax that is dedicated only to building an arena. Thats why they threw it in with a tax for safety forces.
