The people who think that all programs that declare they are playing at the DI level are actually capable of realistically competing at the DI level are obviously deluding themselves. The MAC teams can't hope to win or even 'compete' at the level of teams like Alabama,LSU,Ohio State etc, etc. year in and year out. The MAC,Sunbelt level teams etc,etc need to get into their own level of competition and compete for championships there. Hell, the Big 10 can't compete against the big boys in bowl games on a regular basis. Akron will never compete on the level of the power conferences. Never have. Lets get to a level where the program is annually competetive.
-
Maybe this is one of the problems here. There is no reason to continue to try to defend what was not accomplished over the past30 years years or so. A lot of people on this board don't like to be reminded or don't know that both the football and basketbaball programs wer successful before the disatarous decision was made to go to D-I. The basketball program is stuck and the football program has never really been consistently competetive.I'll keep buying season tickets. But,please don't denigrate fans who question the direction of this administration when the record of the football program deserves nothing more.

We have talked about this scenario before. Maybe its the labels(FBS,FCS I-AA D-II etc etc) that get some people unhinged. So try to ignore the labels and what they connote. Think more in terms of what Akron can reasonably and consistently accomplish over time in football. Can it be competetive with the 'big' programs? No. Can it be consistently competetive with 'MAC' level schools? We will find out in the next couple of years. Do they want to play for a place in a championship tourney or the chance to go to a lower level bowl game? I have never liked the idea of playing sacrifice games for $$$. The players get beat up and in the current set up accomplishes little except to bring in the heretofore mentioned $$$. I know $$$ is needed to run the program. But a competetive program will bring in $$$ also. I would love to see the conferences like the MAC and others get separated from the 'big' boys. I would love to see the program compete for a conference championship and have the opportunity to get in to a playoff tourney. Use whatever label you want. But,play at whatever level where the program can sustain competetiveness.

About the 2005 team,JD said they got lucky before they got good. He was probably correct. They beat NIU in OVT at the Bowl. Then beat them again in the last seconds at the MAC Champ game? There were so many tiebreakers in '05. Funny, NIU is the common denominator 7 years later. Thats a consistently good program. Imagine.

If we are worrying about what other teams in the MAC are doing as far as coaching changes are concerned in the hope that somehow those teams will go in the shi...r and give Akron a better opportunity,it is a loser mentality. I doubt that too many people at Toledo,NIU,BGSU,BSU,K.SU or OU were all that concerned about who the coach was going to be here. Once they got the films on TB and Amato they went about their business. If you are intimidated by the coach on the other sideline in the MAC,please leave.

By the way,IUP has some other Akron connections besides Getsy.
-
There is another Cignetti coaching there. The school has a history with that family. He is putting that program back together after Lou Tepper kinda let it slide. Wouldn't be surprised if Cignetti starts moving. Maybe he takes Getsy with him. Indiana is supposed to be one hell of a party school. I have relatives who live out there. There ain't nothin' else to do.

There have been studies. While the plastic may keep players from getting skull fractures, they appear to exacerbate concussive and neck and spinal injuries. The so called 'whiplash' injuries because the plastics do not absorb they transmit. And,players have more of a tendency to use their helmets as a battering ram. AND,some coaches apparently encourage it.

OOPS

NIU went to the Mac Champeenship game last year. Obviously this coach wasn't the difference.
-
Game was a little like the 2005 game. NIU ahead. Looks comfortable. OOPS,Getsy to Hixon. Akron wins. Better outcome for NIU this time.
-
Coach Bowden, when can Akron be at least a .500 team again?
-
Some people on this site are talking about money. Are the $$$ any diffrernet if NIU wins tonight? Why do you want K.S.U. to gain ANY advantage in recruiting, media coverage etc. by winning? There is no logical reason IF you are an Akron fan! Ya,its nice for MAC fans to dream about getting into a phony bowl set up. But,forAkron or any other teams in the MAC aside from padding their athletic dept. coffers it doesn't matter who wins.
-
Lets see how many more butts in the seats there are for Zips games next year after all this is done. The $$$ inherited from the success of other teams like the F.L.A.S.h.E.S and NIU is nice. But,honestly,we should be this excited if Akron is 5-6 next season. How many of you went to the MAC championshiop game and the Motor City Bowl game in 2005? THAT was exciting. But,didn't do a lot of good long term.

A school like UMASS is not going to step down in basketball to come to the MAC. Theah school is hoping it can do what Temple did and move to what was regarded as a better football conference. Temple is likely hoping that since it is in the Philly market and in the Big East they will be able to land in a better spot than if they were still in the MAC.
-
OK I can kinda buy that. Houston,DFW,Philly are far larger than anything around here. If somebody thought a team in any college sport from the CAK-CLE market would have been lucrative that team(s) would have been reeled in long ago. There is no media market that makes any of the MAJOR sports teams at K.S.U or Akron attractive to any conference. OSU is still the dominant team in this area like it or not.Toledo might be attractive for football because they win and are in the Detroit market. NIU might be attractive in football because they win and are in the Chicago market. What I fear is that many teams in the MAC or Sunbelt for example may have some choices to make among bad alternatives when the music stops.
-
Please clarify. The Dallas,Philly,Houston markets are no bigger than the CLE-CAK market?
-
Actually its not as simple as just a couple of teams losing. But,I'd love to see K.En.T play somebody like Florida State,South Carolina,K.State,Stanford, UCLA,Oregon,Wisconsin,Nebraska, etc. etc. But I'd rather see Akron be in that position in 3-4 years. Go Flashes!

Geez, how quickly we lose our perspective. K.S.U. in a BCS Bowl game? They have a good D for the MAC no doubt. They have a good RB. They have a decent O line. They have a QB who would not have started at Akron. Their secondary is only adequate for the MAC with the D line they have in front of them. How good are the wideouts? Setting aside the Big East BCS rep for a minute, which BCS team from the other conferences does K.S.U. stack up against? Come on. They did beat Rutgers. The overrated team from the BE. They got clocked by KU. They beat up on the Zips,MOfOh etc. etc. I am very concerned that the recent bottom feeders in the MAC may be in the cold when all the chairs are taken. Lets worry about what TB does with this team so we don't have to sit thru 1-11 and losing to Can't again next season.
-
Akron hasn't had an adequate defense in years. And,when we talk about a player being the 'best' at his position on this team,we are saying little. I thought Griggs played decently but he is gone. Presley looked promising until he got hurt. Amato et. al. get a mulligan for this season because of the general lack of talent/depth at the DL/ LB .As we saw this year, this team will not simply be able to outscore opponents. You don't have to have a K.S.U. or BGSU defense, but until you have playmakers at LB and in the secondary, this team will continue to 'chase points' as TB has said.
-
If TB is going to run this offense,he needs WR's who not only can separate, but catch the ball when it is in the area. Find them,TB.
-
Well, its over. Last night was closer than I expected but then again it wasn't. There is a lot of eval. that TB needs to do,especially on the D side. That in my estimation includes coaches. The D needs some serious help on the line and at LB. Toledo was shorthanded on the O side but still put up 35. Nothing like a wrecker on the D-line and at LB. Pohl obviously has a stronger arm than Williams. May be a little more mobile. I am still not a big fan of the way Chisholm runs. The commentators referred to him as 'Crazylegs'. There is no WR who can separate himself consistently. The offense nees a smaller, quicker back and a WR who can separate. TB needs to look seriuosly at his offense as well as the D,obviously. He has had his mulligan. Next 4-5 wins are a must. In 2014 over .500.

Don't think anything you are saying here is in dispute. Its been said. Problem here in Akron is that it has been so long since there has been a winner AND the FRONT OFFICE HAD to build INFO. when it did, pressure was artificially placed on the football program. It hasn't been in the position to be a consistent winner for at least 4 years. Now since there are 20,000 empty seast for every game the 'SUITS' look stupid. Bowden should bring in some JC's and transfers that have at least 2 years when they get here. But as has been said repeatedly, this team is at least 3 years away from competing for a MAC championship. If you got a look at the K.S.U./BGSU game and the defenses that were on the field you saw how inept the Akron D has been.
