No need to worry about him coming to UA and cutting his salary in half. For probably one more year at most. Trying to get ahead of it, instead of after the fact. Makes sense to me why he would want the Akron job, but it makes no sense for Akron to want him...

Captain Kangaroo
What they're saying about the Groce hire
mes102
Just looked at that twitter account. Looks like that twitter account has been accurate when it comes to hires. They had the Owens to Miami before a lot of people, Pasternack to UNC-W, and many others. I think this is a done deal. Groce is our next head coach. Wish it was someone like Jamion Christian or Nick McDevitt, but we could have done a lot worse I guess. NWAkron
I think any of these hires could be spun either way...The younger coaches are untested. To me it's all about how are players will react. Will he command and earn respect from them? Groce is now a wealthy man who could have sat out a year or two. He's willing to take us on. 1981 grad
He just brought in a great recruiting class before he was fired, http://www.fightingillini.com/news/2016/11/17/mens-basketball-groce-and-staff-reel-in-top-10-recruiting-class.aspx?path=mbball He has MAC experience, can recruit, took Ohio to the sweet 16, and probably will be hesitant to go to the next level after his experience with the Illini so he should be here for a few years. I hope this happens soon so he can talk to our players and start recruiting since he will have at least 3 players transferring and some open scholarships.
akzipper
Groce would be a better hire than I expected. Hopefully if he chooses to come to Akron he doesn't jump ship in a couple of years. Even though he struggled at Illinois, I could see him going to an AAC, A10 or CUSA school if they came calling. Our only hope is that his "dislike" of Dambrot would drive him to try and break KD's records? right?

There's a difference between having MAC experience and having good MAC experience. He never finished higher than 3rd in the MAC. He was only able to reach 20 wins 2 out of the 4 years. He had IL ranked in the top 10 his first year there and 5 years later he's unemployed and only made the tournament his first year.
kreed5120
The Zips targeting a guy like Groce says the Zips are still committed to winning basketball. They could easily went the cost efficient route and played it off to the fans. You don't spend large money on a guy like Groce then cut the basketball budget. That would defeat the purpose. Also want to add that his failure at the major level may make bigger programs more hesitant to take him if he has similar success here. 8 minutes ago, tpsjugglerdude said: There's a difference between having MAC experience and having good MAC experience. I don't care where we finish as long as we win the MAC Tourney and win a NCAA game or two.

He won more games in the NCAA Tournament in 4 years than all other MAC coaches have in 15+ combined! You are right when you say he didn't reach 20 wins in 2 of the 4 years he was there but, one of the years OU had 19 wins.... 70 wins in his last 3 years at OU. I'll take it. He won 1 less MAC tournament in 4 years than KD did in 13. The only thing I don't like about it is that we will go through the Groce leaving rumors pretty much every offseason if he's successful.
