SG Malcolm Duvivier - Oregon St Transfer

Recommended Posts

I like it.

What's interesting about Groce's approach, is he's targeting talent that is both still available out of high school for whatever reason, and talent that is looking to get out of the shadows of larger programs. You see this more with football programs than you do with basketball, but it can be even more effective in basketball due to the lesser number of bodies on the roster/greater impact ratio.

It's called......"I just took over a basketball program in April that lost their 2 top players, and has had 5 more guys transfer out, and I better look wherever I can to find anyone who might be able to help us win a few basketball games"

But I'm not sure why you find it to be an "interesting approach" to be looking at both high school kids and possible transfers.  Like any coach, all I care about is that he's utilizing scholarships to our greatest benefit.

An earlier article stated he sat out last year for basketball unrelated reasons and spent the year at home for "personal reasons". Perhaps he's wanting to play someplace close to home. If that's the case maybe the team Akron is really battling for his services is Niagara, not Georgetown.

Mr Duvuvier knows Akron!  And (while I don't remember him specifically), I remember this game.  :)

http://collegebasketball.ap.org/article/treadwell-akron-turn-back-oregon-st-83-71-0

"Our second team, those guys coming off the bench — Hallice Cooke, Jarmal Reid, Malcolm Duvivier — they're the guys who were out there providing a spark for us," Nelson said. "Devin Collier and myself, we were out for a long stretch, and we came back. The starters and myself could've played a lot better tonight."

The difference in this game was named Pat Forsythe, who totally dominated OSU's post players.  Tree didn't hurt the cause either.  And the next day, the First-grandmother of the United States, Mrs Marilyn Robinson mournfully related to me that it was the first time she had ever seen her son's team lose!  Sorry 'bout that!

What a nice Mothers Day present! Welcome Malcolm. Make it official and look forward to a great experience at Akron. You'll like what you find here. The recent change in our coaching staff may prove to be the best thing for our progrum (that's not a misspelling, have someone who follows our football explain it to you). :thumb:

Wow.  I can't wait to see what the '17-'18 Zips look like on the court.  I'm thinking it could be a lot of fun and waaaaaaaaaaaaay different from what we have been accustomed to.

I am more excited for '18-'19 since all these transfers cannot play for the Zips until then.

Duvivier will play this year, he is a graduate transfer. Hester, Jackson, and Riak next year.

Duvivier can be described as a strong and bruising guard, who is also a severely underrated athlete and is developing into a solid all-around player. He’s known for having a strong court-presence and often times throughout his career, was tasked with defending the other’s team top-offensive weapon. At Akron, he’ll have the chance to showcase his abilities for first-year head coach John Groce, who takes over the team after a five-year stint at the University of Illinois....While Groce has done a fine job in securing notable transfers to the school, specifically Eric Hester (Florida), Loren Jackson (Long Beach State) and Deng Riak (East Carolina), that trio of new talents won’t be eligible until the 2018-2019 season comes around. Despite a monumental task before him, Groce is hopeful to return the Zips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.
