It will take a month, minimum, to hire a new AD. The season will be over by then. The new one isn't going to fire Joe on day one. The only way Joe leaves will be on his own in January after coaches turn over.

Nobody is going anywhere this season. Whoever is the new AD he/she will look at football first and decide what to do. If the new AD thinks there is an AVAILABLE coaching upgrade I would assume that would be pursued. Moorehead will be gone if the new AD thinks the coach that is available and willing to sign does so. Not rocket science.

If there doesn't seem to be an upgrade, Moorehead and his staff will return for at least part of next season.

I do remember talking to a person who was on the search committee that hired Bowden. He said it kind of came out of nowhere at the last minute. So, who knows.

I would be concerned about the other coaches also. Not that they would be fired but, that the coaches might not be willing to stick around for another AD. We will see.

I'd stick with Joe. Unless there's a "big hire" like Jim Tressel out of retirement or Luke Getsy. Someone who would be loyal-ish to Akron. Still even with those options, you're looking at a 71 year old and someone who has never been a HC before.

I'll see you Jim Tressel and raise you a Jim Grobe. Seriously, Tressel is 71 years old.

Luke has a few more million dollar paydays in his future. Akron ain't one of those places.

I mean female kangaroos are the ones with pouches so it makes sense

I'll disagree.

I don't think anyone connected the "pouch + kangaroo = female" dots until many years into Zippy's existence. I never heard of it until maybe a decade ago. And I'm old.

I hate that our mascot wears a pink tutu at Halloween weekend football games and dresses overtly feminine at others (tiaras, etc.). It is a bad look. If people within the University are militant about promoting that Zippy is a female, just having a pouch is good enough. Mascots should not be marsupial Barbie dolls.

Not a popular opinion in 2024, but what can you do.

Unless JoMo resigns or the new AD comes with a couple of $million in his back pocket there won't be any change. More likely is the new AD will be wielding a hatchet, prepared to slash the budget.

Cutting is the easiest thing to do. I'd be interested in knowing what the plans for revenue growth are besides destroying the football program. We seem to have destroying the football program down as it is the only successful thing we do with the football program. Looking for new ideas.

Unless we ditch football completely, I don't envision any further cuts in that program. More likely elimination of a few other programs. I'd name them but I'm not interested in getting pelted with tomatoes from the fans of those teams on this forum.

Back in April I received a generic email about a deadline to renew my season tickets. Failure to act would result in me losing my seats. The problem with the outreach is that I had downgraded my tickets to GA the previous year.

I was so disappointed by the lack of attention to detail I chose to reply and cc the AD.

I noted that with a season ticket base as small as ours, it shouldn't be hard to have personalized outreaches.

I also mentioned why I had downgraded my tickets and was disappointed in the lack of commitment to the football program.  I referrernced the OSU game and OOC scheduling. I said if they changed their ways I'd be more than happy to purchase 4 club season tickets.

The rep emailed me back, apologized for lack of detail, and offered to say hello at a game.

The AD never responded. I never thought an AD would do a worse job than LW but here we are.

Whomever the new AD is needs to understand fundraising and marketing. Hopefully the president gets this due to his background.

All I'll say is that Zippy (the live mascot) had a pouch going back to at least 1987 because I personally witnessed the KSU Flash tear her pouch at the ACME-Zip game. Zippy threw a real, deep punch into Flash's air hole.  Good times.....

Cutting sports in an already slim program is a challenge.  Baseball and mens cross country were recently brought back, and Title IX at a university with football makes cutting any women's program impossible. It's a difficult problem for UA in particular.  Cutting football could make sense IF (!) UA were not on the hook for millions of dollars for Infocsion Stadium, a venue that is used for nothing but football....and the football blood-money games are essential to keeping the entire athletics program going. I think the only solution to any of this is for the new UA President to get more student on campus.  As difficult as that has been, what else keeps UA and its athletics viable?

A few MAC schools have learned a painful lesson from the elimination of sports programs - they're also severing ties to dedicated current and future alums who would otherwise be very likely to donate money to the university. One school has determined that its elimination of men's track cost far more over the intervening decade than it saved.

We eliminated men’s cc and baseball and then brought them back. Not to mention the addition of women’s lacrosse. Hate to say it, but incredibly dumb for a school to do who is still facing financial difficulty. The band aid was already ripped off. Why put ourselves in this position again?

It looks like everybody is talking about funding football specifically and athletics in general. As we know it takes lots of cash to operate athletics at the DI level. Akron has never been able to rely on attendance to fill a significant part of the financial hole with any sports, especially football. There is not nearly enough student or community interest. There are not enough donors at Akron to fill the void. You can do that at the P4 schools. Not here. I am tired of watching the football team get beat up at the start of every season just to keep the athletic department afloat. So now what? Downgrade, eliminate....? I wouldn't want to see football, for example, eliminated but it doesn't seem to make sense competitivley or financially to continue the path that the athletic department has been on for years now. There are options. Just have to try something that hasn't been tried.

The reason we play the money games is to make up for the lack of ticket sales revenue from our most expensive sport. Football! Imagine if we could average 20k attendance for 6 games. If we just grossed $15 per fan, that would be $1.8 million in revenue. Then would could get by with a more manageable OOC schedule.

Not to mention parking, concessions, and merchandise revenues. We can dream!

Have to win games consistently to get students and the city remotely interested. Can't do that with the way the AD has scheduled over the past 7-10 years. It's a chicken and egg debate.

Multiple topics here.

Good riddance to Charles.

As for the Zips logo, it's a disaster. I do not plan to purchase any Zips gear with this nonsense. My daughter's third grade class in Seattle could have created a better logo.  And what is worse than the logo, is that some idiot decided to that the colors to use are yellow, white and light blue. The only colors that should have been agreed upon are  navy and gold in the logo. Every person who was involved with this logo should be fired and banned from UA.

I hope Joe gets at least one more year.... and the scheduling nonsense at UA continues..Agree with GP1, replace UK with the turds from cbus is ridiculous. Toledo knows how to schedule. We are clueless!
