Alabama State opened with LSU and UNLV, losing 71-64 to the Tigers and 93-79 to the Rebels.  They have a get well game against Virginia-Lynchburg tonight.

Lamar is 1-2 having beaten Paul Quinn College (113-42) while losing to Texas A & M (97-71) and Sam Houston (85-72).  They do not play again before coming to Akron.

Nebraska-Omaha is 2-3 thus far with wins over Mid-America Christian (85-69) and Stetson (79-76) and losses to Minnesota (68-64), UNLV (80-79) and Southern Utah (79-73).   They also do not play before coming to the JAR.

These results are quite respectable IMO. The field may prove to be better than anticipated.

I never heard of any of these teams and really was not looking forward to these games but those scores are much better than our score against St. Mary.  This might be an interesting weekend.  I hope we rebound better than last week.

I was pleasantly surprised.

...and we need a viable back up big...

That horse has been beaten to death.  4 of the 12 OOC opponents are top 25 mid-majors.

Some people are impossible to please. They say football schedules too tough and then complain basketball doesn't schedule tough enough.

The reality is we already lost the 2 measuring stick contests we had. At this point OOC only value is to sort out rotations and build chemistry. This is a completely new group of players. It's going to take time before they peak. Also, these schools are as good, if not better, than several of the schools that we'll play in MAC play.

Good grief.....

They should play at least one P5 school. That's not too much to ask.

Aren't you one of the biggest advocates for G5s ditching the P4s? I know that's largely in football, but the same principal applies in basketball. We have a very competitive G5 schedule. No complaints here.

We got ran off the court against St. Mary's. What do you think would happen if we played Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, etc.?

You are using extreme examples. There are plenty of P4 teams Akron is capable of competing well against and put a little pizzazz on the schedule. Princeton?

Basketball isn't the same as football.

I think you're more optimistic than I am. This is an entirely new roster and very few of these guys have previously played together. It's going to take time for this team to hit their stride.

You're right - there are more competitive mid majors in basketball which would make scheduling P4s for name sake even more unnecessary.

What about the money?  If the football team can be whored out, so can every other program.
