These P4 coaches that have been gaming the system for years are all of a sudden outraged by the open lawless environment. It was much better for them when there were laws that kept the average Joe in check while they subverted the legal system themselves. The coaches are the reason we're in this mess.

Iona lost to Rider, which entered the night at 1-14. I'm not sure if Iona is battling injuries or what, but they have been nosediving the past couple of weeks.

College basketball point shaving scandal ensnares 17 schools. Three of them are MAC schools, Western Michigan and shockingly, Ohio and Kent.

Buffalo was mentioned as well so 1/3 of the schools that played MAC basketball last season. That must explain why the conference was so down /s.

 

Edit: More now that I think about it EMU if I recall was being investigated before. Maybe another school as well.

I always thought two things were going to ruin college sports for me. Gambling and paying the players directly. Not that I don't think that they have a right to get a gain out of what they're producing, but just flat buying teams doesn't get me excited for college sports any more. I will even admit I'm a little less excited for Akron season knowing that they have kind of bought their team as well. It's why soccer is my favorite sport at Akron and not just because they're good, but because I believe that it's about talent, evaluation and skill and not just money. Yes, I know that you still have to have some talent evaluation even with the money but the playing field is not even.

By and large I agree with you. I do think it does setup for some decent David vs Goliath moments. Like I know Indiana is spending some money now, but nothing in comparison to a OSU or Texas A&M.

Unless I'm reading this stuff wrong it seems like UB and EMU are the cuprits here in games played AGAINST OU, WMU and Kent. Is that right???

I saw it mentioned that the EMU player is in trouble for games last season when he played for New Orleans. Not for any games this year at EMU. That would likely mean it was the Buffalo player, whoever that is.

Most likely. There would be no reason for a Kent player to bet on their team covering the spread, as you can't really guarantee covering a spread as much as you can NOT covering the spread.

Also you wonder how much lack of NIL money might have had to do with this. There a no P4 schools named (although there were some Big East schools). If you're already getting paid enough, no reason to take the risk, but if you're making nothing and see all the other schools paying their players big money that could be a root cause.

Two Guardians were betting on the games they were playing in. In regards to your previous post, gambling isn't going to ruin college sports, it is in the process of ruining society. In particular, young men are ruining their futures gambling. 

 

Since we are talking gambling, I'll throw this out there. I would bet $5,000 that in the past 3 years, at least one starting player on the football team or MBB team has bet on a game they were playing in using a gambling app. It's too easy to get away with if you do it in small numbers.

You've only got about 12 guys to work with in terms of MBB, I genuinely believe they all are free from this. Maybe our "kicker" against Indiana had a bet out there

Basketball is just the easiest sport to fix since there are only 5 players playing at a time and players play both offense and defense.

 

I will say thankfully Ohio banned prop bets for collegiate athletes. If it was still active this would likely even be a bigger problem.
