Game 17- Ohio U

Recommended Posts

I thought this was Akron's best game.  We shot the ball well, passed the ball well, a lot of back cuts and points in the paint.  Without a true center, the lane is always open when Akron starts the offense.  Also, because everyone can shoot the 3, it is difficult to drop back on the ball handler.  As a result, we have been able to attack to lane and score inside.  The defense was good but we still have difficulty with guarding bigger guys and this is the 2nd game in a row we have had a big disparity in foul shots.  We also had a great crowd tonight with about 70% capacity.  I never expected Amani Lyles to be as good around the basket as he has been the last few games.  Really finishing at the basket.  Great team effort.

Another fun game.  Some of points from Groce's post-game that stuck out.  One, they played 25 minutes of good defense and 30 minutes of good offense.  The first half was as good of defense as they played all year.  Second, they still need to step on the neck of an opponent when they have them down.

Another free throw disparity tonight with the OU shooting 33 while the Zips shot 15.

Agreed.  No other MAC program has had our good fortune.

And without Dambrot I do not believe we would ever have Groce. After many many years of bad Akron basketball feel very fortunate to have had both.

i've thought most of the season that this team looks different than other Groce teams.  These guys are mature and strong.  This is a completely different experience.

Amen, with a deep roster of capable players who all play their role without a standout star.  Lots of fine players but no LCJ...X...Enrique.  Just a bunch of solid dues across the board.

Was anybpdy close enough to get a sense of what prompted the T on Tavari?

In 2013-2014 the Zips would fill the Convocation Center and we would play a regular season game before 11000 crazy fans in the Ozone and we had 5000 fans at the Jar.  They had DJ Cooper and Kellogg and we had Zeke Marshall and Treadwell and Abreau.  Both teams were loaded and at the top of the MAC and there was some great basketball games.  Last year we drew 5500 fans at OU meaning the arena was at less than half capacity.  My guess is that tonight our building will be around half capacity even with all the student promotions.  I just don't see the passion for MAC basketball that we had a dozen years ago.

I think part of the disconnect is the portal. It was much easier to invest in players and teams knowing they'd be Zips for 4 or 5 years. Now, we just don't know. And yes - I know we had Enrique and Tribble the whole time, but I don't anticipate that being the norm. I'm already fearing the NIL offers Sharron Young will get this Spring.

no but I guess is comparable to the one at Kent last year

I sit behind the Ohio Bench and during one of the time outs I saw Tevari had words with one of the Ohio players who I was told was Coach Boals son.   When the ref called the T, I am speculating that Tevari may had said something to him or the bench and the ref called the T.  I did not see it but after the T I saw this player then talk to the ref who called the T.  It is a lot of speculation but it would not be the first time an Akron player got called for a T for something that was said or a motion to the opposing bench.  I noticed that Tevari sat the rest of the game.  Again, just speculation.

This team is really growing on me.

If this team were to go back and play their OOC schedule with this level of cohesion and consistent scheduling (not 10 days in between games), they'd only have 2 losses right now at most.

Is bobcatattack in meltdown mode yet?

Surprisingly quite tame down there in northern West Virginia. By the tone of their board, they seemed to expect this type of outcome.

Wins against Toledo and Ohio.  That's a good week.

Miami OH next Saturday followed by Kent the week after will be one heck of a 2-3 week stretch.

Many good backdoor cuts and passes.  Haven't seen this all year.  Maybe because OU was guarding the three point line too much, but take what they give.

This is the second or third game in a row the backdoor cut has been a staple. It's exactly how Groce is planning on countering teams that play us out on the perimeter, and exactly why we struggled so much in the OOC schedule because those types of IQ plays require a certain level of chemistry.
