You're never going to attract the top talent as long as you have to commit the resources across all of the different sports to remain in the MAC. There are certainly across the board benefits to being in the conference but being in the MAC does no great favors for basketball. LeBron, post Dambrot, is more likely to be found sitting courtside at OSU or Duquesne than at an Akron game. This is fair. Here’s another great idea that won’t get funded. Sorry, but seriously. I wonder if it would be beneficial to have a crowdfunding page on Fear the Roo where we could all see the basketball program’s wish list with their set priorities and goals. I think visualizing each line item might give perspective and motivation. I know a new stadium costs tens of millions, but I have no idea how much a Thanksgiving tournament costs. People feel their $50 - $100 is a drop in the bucket, but if they see a line item slowly progress towards 100% maybe there would be more involvement. Edit: I just want to add that I would like one of the line items to be a general fund specifically giving Bud Wentz permission to use his financial talents to invest and grow a nest egg for the long term. That kind of commitment would go a long way. That’s where a lead gift from LeBron would go a long way. Has he ever given any money? I know he gives Ohio State cleats and headphones, etc. That’s so nickel and dime stuff for him. Akron is home to a guy with unlimited resources and he could provide a lead gift toward improving the basketball facility. Maybe he has already said no or maybe no real plan has ever been presented. Abandon all of the cupcake games in the ooc and schedule high paying opponents on the road. It works great for the football program. Seriously, shooting better Friday night wouldn't have cost a penny more. My experience in this world is you get what you pay for. I agree, but I do think it is on athletics and the Collective to find a variety of avenues to create this funding. I like the thought process @Illini Zip just shared on providing specifics of where money is going. I would be far more apt to donate to a specific goal I am in support of than just mailing a check to the collective and hoping it helps. But that's just me. I also think they should find a way to highlight all donors, not just the Summit Circle. Maybe allow anyone who donated $100 or more to go shoot on the court after a particular game. Or hold a post-game meet-and-greet with a player. 10 fans donating $100 is just as good as one donating $1000. Maybe they could raise some NIL money at season ticket purchase time doing something like this. Drake gets an 11 seed while the Akron zips who swept their own conference gets a 13/14 seed? It's a joke. If the Zips could get matched up against the 5th seed, I think they could pull the upset.
