How do we take the next step?

Recommended Posts

Playing in the MAC holds the program down.  You're never going to attract the top talent as long as you have to commit the resources across all of the different sports to remain in the MAC.   There are certainly across the board benefits to being in the conference but being in the MAC does no great favors for basketball.  It's all a balance.

This could be stupid but I want people’s opinion…. Would it help the program if instead of the Nike logo we put the LeBron logo on the jersey. Just like Carolina puts the Jordan logo on the jersey.

also can we get LeBron to be assistant GM just like Steph is doing for Davison.

I know NIL is important and we have a billionaire who has ties to the program.

Not stupid, but with respect to athletics he seems to be much more of a fan of the Buckeyes.  I think KD not being that involved with the program also may temper his enthusiasm.

The difference here is Steph played at Davidson and seems to have passion for it. LeBron, post Dambrot, is more likely to be found sitting courtside at OSU or Duquesne than at an Akron game.

Maybe it changes in the future post retirement, but outside of sending out an occasional tweet, he doesn't seem all that interested in Akron basketball at the moment.

Everybody has all these ideas about what is needed to move the program forward but nobody wants to help pay for those things.

This is fair.

Here’s another great idea that won’t get funded. Sorry, but seriously. I wonder if it would be beneficial to have a crowdfunding page on Fear the Roo where we could all see the basketball program’s wish list with their set priorities and goals. I think visualizing each line item might give perspective and motivation. I know a new stadium costs tens of millions, but I have no idea how much a Thanksgiving tournament costs. People feel their $50 - $100 is a drop in the bucket, but if they see a line item slowly progress towards 100% maybe there would be more involvement.

Edit: I just want to add that I would like one of the line items to be a general fund specifically giving Bud Wentz permission to use his financial talents to invest and grow a nest egg for the long term.

The program is in such a good place right now. Sure wish UA would come up with some plan for the JAR. That kind of commitment would go a long way. That’s where a lead gift from LeBron would go a long way.

Has he ever given any money? I know he gives Ohio State cleats and headphones, etc. That’s so nickel and dime stuff for him. Akron is home to a guy with unlimited resources and he could provide a lead gift toward improving the basketball facility. Maybe he has already said no or maybe no real plan has ever been presented.

Is this in response to my post?

It's just a general comment. It's great to want new seating, better scheduling, better players, etc... All of those things cost money. The administration is telling us more cuts are coming. If you are a fan, you can do your part to make up the difference. Buy a better seat. Make a donation to the Zip Athletic club. Make a donation to the collective. UA is not a P-4 school with large numbers of rich alumni. LeBron is not going to come rescue us. My experience in this world is you get what you pay for.

Abandon all of the cupcake games in the ooc and schedule high paying opponents on the road. It works great for the football program.

Seriously, shooting better Friday night wouldn't have cost a penny more.

I don't know what Jeff Gillooly would cost these days, but diverting some NIL money to hire him to kneecap some of the Wildcats would have helped.

I agree, but I do think it is on athletics and the Collective to find a variety of avenues to create this funding. I like the thought process @Illini Zip just shared on providing specifics of where money is going. I would be far more apt to donate to a specific goal I am in support of than just mailing a check to the collective and hoping it helps. But that's just me.

I also think they should find a way to highlight all donors, not just the Summit Circle. Maybe allow anyone who donated $100 or more to go shoot on the court after a particular game. Or hold a post-game meet-and-greet with a player. 10 fans donating $100 is just as good as one donating $1000. If it's hard for people to see where their hard-earned money is going, they won't give it to you.

When I go to Jersey Mike's among other restaurants, I'm always asked if I want to leave a tip and suggestions are made. Maybe they could raise some NIL money at season ticket purchase time doing something like this.  Depending on the past giving of season ticket holders, different giving levels could be recommended.

Here is a question for anyone. If we could afford to play a few extra OOC games is it permitted by the NCAA?

Im going to make a recommendation, but I'm a little worried 75% of all athletic directors will take it seriously.

Akron should play an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters and serve as the Washington Generals. We could split the profits with all going to the NIL collective. Imagine Hilltopper or the President of the school getting doused with a bucket full of confetti. Problem solved.

This is brilliant. Our church does something like this for their missions goals, although not quite to this extent. It's a lot easier to spend money when you know what you're spending it on.

I would also like to add that they desperately need to find some sort of clothing supplier that will provide much cheaper attire options without sacrificing too much aesthetically. @Zippy87 is right about the jerseys and vest. At that price point, they target a very niche group of supporters, and probably people that already give a lot to the university/program. They need to find a way to offer Joe Akron desirable attire/gear at an affordable price point.

I've heard something related to a contract UA has with Barnes and Noble that limits what they can produce/sell, but I don't really understand it or know if there's a way to get out of it. I will say that, as a person with a closet full of Zips gear, I was jealous that the guy from Barstool that they sent a box of gear to got so many cool items after he hopped on the bandwagon for a week. 😂

Maybe now that Charles is gone, the surplus sale will come back!

I mean the NCAA is fundamentally rigged. Why do the Akron Zips perpetually get a 13/14 seed? You're telling me the might McNeese State from the mighty Southland Conference is somehow more deserving of a higher seed than the Akron Zips from the Mid American Conference? Drake gets an 11 seed while the Akron zips who swept their own conference gets a 13/14 seed? It's a joke.

If the Zips could get matched up against the 5th seed, I think they could pull the upset. Arizona was a good shot, I must admit, but we had uncharacteristically low % shooting and Arizona had uncharacteristically high % shooting.

Drake

28-3 overall, 17-3 Conference

Net Ranking: 56

Quad 1 and 2 wins: 6

McNeese State

25-6 overall, 19-1 Conference)

Net Ranking: 58

Quad 1 and 2 wins: 1

Akron

28-6 overall, 17-1 Conference

Net Ranking: 91

Quad 1 and 2 wins: 1

So Akron should be over McNeese State right? "Net Ranking" is meaningless.
